On twitter the other day, or somewhere i cant really remember where, someone tweeted/reblogged/posted a link to an article on forbes.com about an idea for a universal console and a patent being requested for it.
Imagine how this could affect the gaming industry. There would be no need for the individual consoles anymore. It would crush microsoft, nintendo, and sony. People would no longer need to buy other consoles, which is both good and bad.
Imagine being able to play Halo, Mario Kart, and God of War all on the same console! It would be crazy. But a big chunk of big gaming industries funds come from the selling of their consoles. Imagine the world of hurt it would impose as well.
But to me its like fusing together the whole gaming WORLD into ONE. Like instead of Xbox and Playstation fanboys, they would no longer exist. It would be like combining the Red Sox and the Yankees into one franchise and fanbase. It would combine communities, as it would destroy them. It would give birth as it would bring death, in a melodramatic point of view. Just imagine.
The link is right here if you think Im lying for all of the trolls out there.
Considering that halo and other games are owned by Microsoft, sony, and nintendo, each company will sue for use of their property without the right, meaning it can’t happen.
Perhaps, in several years, we might se something similar to this (which houses NES, SNES, and Genesis games in the same console), however in current times, it is HIGHLY unlikely, especially with anti-monopoly laws in place (as Plunderfall said).
What you’re referring to, OP, is the “Steam Box”. which would simply bring Steam services to television, as far as we know. From whatever rumors and speculation, it’s nothing more than a customized PC that uses Steam for gaming purposes. Has a lot of potential though, with no required disc and cloud storage…
> > Could not happen, anti-monopoly statutes prevent such a thing from taking place.

> This, at least in America, this would be considered illegal.
Not to mention already established industry giants will not just let go of their piece of the gaming pie, no matter what country.
The only way that a consolidation of the gaming market could take place is if a universally excepted superior product was released and maintained a standard that nobody could match, ever.
If MS has not figured that out yet, it may not be possible LOL
