The future of competitive gaming for Halo.

So after seeing Microsoft’s spokes person tweet out “Halo 5: Guardians will not support any form of split-screen multiplayer, nor will the game natively support LAN play. 343’s focus is to ensure that fans get the best Halo experience yet, and the team felt a split-screen experience would compromise the gameplay design and the visual bar they’ve set.” I’m a little confused so I’m taking to the forums for clarification. Does this mean LAN for competitive gaming at events isn’t going to be in game? Just trying to get some info and hoping Halo isn’t going to online tournys.

Try split-screen on MCC H2A. I played with just one friend and as soon as there were more than 10 objects on screen, the framerate died. Optimisation is possible but it is a lot of work and with the level of fidelity in just H2A forge maps, I expect the level performance gained would be minimal in Halo 5. Remember, the Xbox One isn’t exactly a powerhouse.

Let’s look at Reach. When in split-screen, objects are culled aggressively and there was a visible amount of pop-in when turning.
343 have stated that their focus is on quality not quantity, so I expect that had a large impact on their decision not to spend a large amount of time and resources optimizing split-screen for it to just look horrible and generally underperform.

As for LAN, I can’t sugar-coat it at all.
I imagine this is a by-product of focusing on dedicated servers for hosting matches.
To my memory, someone from 343 stated that the HCS and such will use a custom setup for LAN matches so it is possible but it might be a hardware limitation for retail Xbox One’s.

I like to think that it’s the direction that the Microsoft are taking Xbox that is forcing everything to be online but that’s just me.

It sucks and I feel your pain.

most of the competetive games seen nowadays has online only features…most of the best competetive games in the past where only playable through the internet…so i dont get this -Yoinking!- about splitscreen…halo 5 will kick -Yoink-!

Well Halo was never just competitive so that might be why people are upset that a feature that adds playability has been removed.

Not everyone has good internet and Halo never used to disappoint those people.

I don’t use split-screen anymore but that won’t stop me from expressing my minor disdain at its removal.

I could care less about split-screen, I’m talking about LAN’s. All competitive games are competed at LAN’s. CoD used to have online tournaments for MW2 but honestly no one took it seriously because Halo was top dog back then. Making Halo 5 a game for the competitive scene is the best move 343 can make. After Reach MLG dropped Halo never even giving Halo 4 a chance (even though the game wasn’t fixed till early 2013 so it kinda makes since) which made pros and others move to CoD. Because of this pros and other popular twitch streamers started streaming CoD. This effects a lot more than I think people realize. Seeing a person you like play a game that they find enjoying and fun will make you gravitate towards it. This isn’t directly the cause for everyone jumping on the CoD bandwagon but it sure helped shape the competitive scene today.

You never heard of HCS or what? They want to make Halo E-Sports big.

But the first tourney will probably have AR starts so meh

What would make you think its AR start first?

Pistol starts get it right like it should always have been. A precision weapon that is weaker than a br but can still out shoot a br.

“We took the starting load out seriously,” DelHoyo says. “We didn’t want people to start out with something lame so they couldn’t defend themselves, but we didn’t want them to be super powerful either. The assault rifle and magnum have been especially scrutinized. Our magnum has received a buff since the beta. The rate of fire has gone down, but the damage has gone up. If you miss a shot, you’re penalized a little bit, so we’re hoping that it will appeal to the skilled crowd. Meanwhile, the assault rifle has been given four extra rounds to each magazine, and those four bullets make a big difference in getting kills. So those two weapons have been super-tuned, and we feel like we have a load out that will be used by both the pro scene and the casual player.”

There you go.

Whatever…

As with what has been officially said so far;
No, no you can’t just LAN it. Tournaments themselves will get special treatment. What that means specifically is up to 343i and the venue. Past that, everyone is running off of the local data server closet to whatever tournament is being run.

Which means though it’s not LAN, it’s actually just slightly under par for relaying an equal and accurate simulation to all consoles involved.

We may come to find that some of the new eSport features are only possibly because it uses cloud computing to assist things. The free floating spectator mode INSIDE an active game wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

Thankfully that’s not a confirmation. I doubt the Halo pro scene would adopt an AR. I’ve been in it a loooooooong time and I know if there’s one thing the pro scene doesn’t like is automatic weapons in Halo…and explosive barrels…and shotguns (mauler doesn’t count)…and don’t forget the Hammer (surprisingly sword has found a home in the community).

Why are so many other games able to use splitscreen then?

Battlefront has splitscreen and it looks roughly 8.7 million times better than H5.

Also running on a completely different engine. Now you could make the argument that the engine Halo 5 is running on, if that indeed is the cause of the problem, should be updated but updating an engine takes years. I personally think Halo 5 looks gorgeous. Its hard to compare what looks better when there’s different art styles in play.

It has splitscreen in one mode that is made specifically for it which is offline only so it barley supports splitscreen.

It has less detailed environments and less detailed enemies. It also doesnt feature a campaign mode, space battles, instant action, hunt, and many other gametypes are unknown at this time. Its easy to make a snow map with snowtroopers and rebels in snow disguises. You just make everything look white. Also, the backbone of their engine may not be 60 FPS. as fun as battlefield and dice games are, they are constantly a buggy mess, and have constant unresponsive or random deaths The sniper rifle is a longshot (pun intended) at best, as the shot may sometimes register, sometimes not.

I definitely wouldn’t say they’re back yet. Halo 2A is the same 3 maps over and over, so there’s not much to do right now, but they’re kick starting it. Halo 5 has some very nubbish game mechanics, but with the ability to change these (especially deactivating sprint) in customs, H5 might have a chance. MIGHT.

343 and Microsoft are going all in on returning Halo to its competitive roots, and the HCS is a great example of that. That will only grow over time, and with the release of Halo 5 there will be a ton of attention on the tournaments. I think the competitive scene will definitely return, it may take some time to build up an audience as big as Halo 3’s, but it will get there eventually, imo.

H5 has sprint and no LAN support.

Lol
