We’ve been fighting them since 2001. We beat them in Halo 3. We beat them (again) in Halo 5. And, with the advent of the Prometheans and the Created, it seems like 343 may be pushing them out of the games for good.
IIRC, I read somewhere about a game or other media piece which, after having wrapped them up from the franchise, revisited a favorite character or group or something years later in a new work that was both shined a new light on them as well as gave them a “final bow” out of the franchise.
I think it’d be great if 343 could one day revisit the Covenant as an enemy at their height–truly ferocious, menacing, and unstoppable–when they first invaded humanity’s colonies in the mid-2520’s. Play as a regular ODST or marine. Do you think the Covenant deserve this treatment as a way to say a proper goodbye?
That’s kind of what Halo Reach was.

True, but that was more Bungie’s swan song than the Covenant’s, and it occurred basically in the same part of the war as the other games, when humanity knew of the Covenant. I think their final bow out of the franchise should be a game when humanity didn’t know what they were up against–essentially a first contact game.
343 already seems unwilling to let go of the Covenant, there isn’t much need to keep revisiting them over and over again, even in a prequel.
If they’re going to hold onto the Covenant I’d rather they do something from the inside, something from the perspective of a rank-and-file Brute or Sangheili that depicts their values and motivations. Without that they’re just an interchangeable bunch of alien bad guys for you to shoot.

Not likely. The Covenant once-again got a “Get out of destruction free card” with “Sali 'Nyon” leading a group of Remnants - he even has a CAS class assault carrier. Unfortunately, he’s not very interesting.

Both of these. I think Reach was supposed to be the Covenant’s swan song, but 343 just can’t quite bring themselves to pull the trigger (pun intended) on a 100% Covenant-free game, they know there will be those people that complain “It’s just not Halo without the Covenant”…
I agree that in their current state they’re kind of a joke, and getting a bit tiresome to fight. But perhaps, since we all know the Created are going to get most of the band back together, maybe that’s how they will rise back up to being a significant and intimidating faction again.
The Covenant will be around for a bit longer. Just because they’re fractured group doesn’t mean they can’t be either lethul of helpful.
