In New Blood, Buck mentions that in late November of 2552, after getting the info they wanted from Vergil, he and his squad were sent back to fight the final battles of the war.
Considering the Battle of Voi is the only known battle at that time, and they definitely didn’t go to the Ark, what battle or battles is he referring to? Even Dare says there was still a war to fight, but what war? Didn’t the Covenant leave Earth with Truth through the Portal?
Well Bucks Unit was sent to the ark so he may mean this even its unkown if he was even there.

This was never confirmed. He mentions the Ark in the novel but would’ve said something about going there if he did.

You might be getting confused with Nathan Fillion’s other character Sergeant Reynolds who did go to the Ark.

Maybe Reynolds and Buck have been in the same unit because it has been confirmed that an Unit in which Buck serve has been on the ark but not if Buck himself has been on the ark.And to your confusion idea:Not true because before this thread I have not even know that Buck and Reynolds have the same actor. And if we are on this theme :have we ever heard something new about Reynolds after Halo3?
Corrections and personnal views are welcome
I doubt there was an immediate end to hostilities in a conflict of the scale of the H/C war. There were probably invasions and occupations going on across the colonies at the time of the Ark battle and the ceasefire wouldn’t reach every commander (or they chose to ignore it). War is the business of the ODSTs and business was booming in 2552/3.
The Covenant weren’t just in Voi/Mombasa, there were other forces in North America (Halo: Uprising), Australia (Halo: Glasslands), Pakistan (Halo: Landfall), etc.
Only the forces present in Voi followed Truth through the Portal to the Ark. The rest probably maintained their occupation elsewhere to some degree.

I’m aware of this, although I’m wondering if they followed Truth through the Portal, or at least attempted to, as far away as they were. The Portal presumably remained open until the Chief severed its outpoint over the Ark a few weeks later.
So is it really safe to say that with the exception of Truth’s forces at the Ark, the “final battles” were relegated to the occupation of sites around Earth? Halopedia pretty definitively states that the Covenant presence on Earth “ended” when Truth went through the Portal.

800 worlds at the start of the war…even with 30 years that is a LOT of space to cover. And the Covenant didn’t just instantly go “plop” when the Scism happened. Splinter groups shot off all which way. Lots of battles still going on.
Truth didn’t bring EVERYTHING he had to Earth…if he had there wouldnt be anything left.
There were also attacks on Luna, Mars and other settlements in the Sol System. I believe Spartan Blue Team was seen near the space elevator in Cuba which was documented in Ghosts of Onyx.
