The few things I didn't like with the beta

So I got lucky enough to be able to participate in the early access beta for Halo 5 last week. I really enjoyed it and I think this installation has the potential to be the best game in the series since Halo 3. I love that they brought the equal footing-foundation for the multiplayer back and the new spartan abilities are cool additions. Playing Halo 5 for the first time was a lot like playing Halo 2 for the first time. It is familiar, yet very exciting and fresh.

But there’s room for improvements and this is, in my honest and humble opinion, the things that bugged me in the beta:

The music that plays when you die. It gets real tedious after a while. It’s the same, almost one-noted musical piece every time and I really got furious with it at those times when I went up against a disgustingly good team and died basically within a minute every time I spawned. I don’t know how this seemed like a good idea for anyone. Sure I’m biased because I generally don’t like music in my multiplayer at all, but this was overdoing it. This may be just me, let me know what you guys think about it.

Dudebro. The spartans behave very obnoxiously. When a team wins we get to see them fist bumb and high five like the battle was a game of tag on the school yard. My close friend, who also got in the beta last week, hated it so much he started saying “oh, here comes the -Yoink- bag screen” every time a match was won. I have no problem with the spartans making a appearance before the match but god, isn’t these the best soldiers in the galaxy? Are we playing paintball as teens or are we battling as spartans? I also didn’t like how the spartans congratulated me on pulling of a “nice headshot”, as if that was something out of the ordinary for these guys. Make them act like the spartans they are. Again, this may be just me. Feel free to tell me I’m wrong.

I struggled with the controls. This is a real problem for me. The default control scheme will make any FPS fan feel right at home. You aim down sights with the left trigger, throw granades with the left bumper and so on. To me, a long time Halo fan, it feels wierd to play Halo like that though. I won’t use the smart scope nearly enough to be comfortable with it taking up the left trigger. I want to zoom in like I always have. Fortunately there’s plenty of schemes that lets me do that. The “Halo 4” option was the one I was the most comfortable with but the only problem there is that the ground pound will be extremely awkward to pull off. You see - to do that you need to hold the crouch button and aim at the same time and that is impossible to do comfortably then the crouch button is B. I needed to move my index finger (!!) to B and then pull it off. It works but it’s not ideal. I would like a scheme where you crouch with LB, thrust with B, throw nades with LT and zoom with the right stick. That isn’t an option, sadly. Hopefully there will be more options when the game comes out.

The killcams. 343 has been accused of ripping off Call of Duty since Halo 4 and honestly - it isn’t that unfair sometimes. Having loadouts, perks and personal ordnance in a Halo game felt way too much like just that. So I’m so glad that stuff is gone in Halo 5. I don’t consider the smart scope being a COD-thing either, as if COD is the only shooter who has the feature of aiming “properly”. But the killcam… It’s basically impossible not to think of the killcam as a Call of Duty-thing. I know, I know - it’s educational for the new players to see how they died and what they need to do better in the next encounter. But for me who knows my Halo and knows what I did wrong when I die it’s nothing but a distraction. The easiest way to remedy this is to have the killcam an optional thing. Let me turn the thing off, please. Just let me wait the five or so seconds it takes for me to respawn and let me stare at my corpse. If I get t-bagged I want to know about it.

The excessive power weapon call-outs. Look, I don’t mind there being a call-out for when the sniper spawns. Does it have to be so much of it though? First they tell you that there’s thirty seconds left until the power weapon spawn. Then they tell you which power weapon it is. They do the same for when there’s ten seconds left and finally once more when it’s actually up on the map. It is more than enough to tell me once. “Snipers up in thirty seconds”. I’m not stupid. On top of that they actually put a timer on the spawn location so it’s really not needed to call out the spawn times that much.

And that is basically it. That isn’t a very long list of issues. Like I said - I really enjoyed the beta in general and I thought I wouldn’t feel as comfortable with the new directions as I was. The sprint feels balanced, the ground pound didn’t kill me a single time (I only managed to kill one enemy with it and he had no shields to begin with), the smart scope felt natural after five minutes, the weapons seemed more balanced that before and the thrusters feels so satisfying.

And again, I love that they went back to basics in the sense that everyone once again starts with equal footing. I won’t miss the armor abilities, the perks, the loadouts at all whatsoever. If this was a list of issues for Halo 4 it would have gone on a lot longer so we’re definitely heading in the right direction.

Thanks for the read and have a good sunday.

Good list dude, from all the gameplay I have watched you basically summed up all of my issues with the game, and these same things have been brought up countless times on this forum so 343 is going to need to be completely ignorant if any of these things make it into the final game

I can deal with most of the things on the list except from the killcams. Since Halo 4, there’s no denying that they were horrifically out of sync; seems to be the same in Guardians.

Anyone else feel that way?

Not really, the cam at least felt accurate this time around. It was useless in Halo 4, looking laggy and awful. Here it shows what acually happens but it still bugs me.

The dude bro Call outs don’t bother me much. These guys aren’t Spartans in the traditional sense. Dr. Halsey doesn’t consider them Spartans at all… They were exceptional soldiers who were invited to the program after living a fairly normal life. These guys and girls were probably star athletes in high school, and have the cockiness to prove it. There certainly wouldn’t be sociopaths like the Spartan IIs and IIIs.

The controls definitely need work. I use bumper jumper, but decided to turn stabilizers off by default. It just seems weird to be floating in the air every time I scope and jump at the same time. But that also puts me at a disadvantage when trying to do some of the trick jumps. I think stabilizers shouldn’t be tied to smart scope at all…tapping the jump button again while in the air should trigger it. Or, I’d be just as happy if they got rid of stabilizers altogether.

The call outs are a bit much… I don’t think they need to go altogether, but I’d be happy to just have small text or a timer at the bottom of the screen.

Kill cams can die in a fire for all I care. I don’t think they belong in ranked play lists… and when they are out of sync, it makes you feel like you were lag killed, which is irritating.

Overall though, I was thrilled with the beta. It invoked the same feelings halo 2 did at launch.

Great list, man. The way you explained your problems with the game was perfect and the spacing between the paragraphs was easy on my eyes. Can’t stand reading a wall of text. Can’t wait to play the beta tomorrow!

I get what you’re saying about the spartans but I still think it’s ridiculous. Why would anyone act like a fool that way? No matter what the reason behind the high fiving and fist bumping is I will dislike it.

But again - that’s just me. If nothing is done about it it’s not the end of the world. Still think the game will kick butt.

Great list. Constructive criticism and I agree with everything there.

theres nothing there that is ridiculous to suggest they scrap, they’re just little things but also things that make a big impact.

YES. Dude bro thing. It’s the cheesiest rubbish I’ve seen in a game in a long time. It cheapens Halo and the Spartans. It’s iust so cringeworthy I don’t know who’s stupid idea it was to add it.

even when I was younger I’d have hated that feature and now I’m older it ruins the game completely.

I can see why it would be annoying, and the fist bumping after every match gets old quickly. Our more or less talking about their voice overs “nice head shot” , “I got nades”, “enemy sniper, keep your head down”, “thanks for the save” etc. I believe they would talk this way, because nations and odst’s have been talking this way, and these guys were once in those positions.

One other thing I forgot; I miss the friendly fire. I don’t have a very good reason for why it should be there, I just liked it in the other games. It made you have to think about what you’re doing. You had to watch where you threw your grenades and where you used weapons like the rocket launcher.

Without friendly fire none of that comes into play. And yeah sure, I know that people acted like scum and killed their team mates for power weapons and such but still…

I know it wasn’t in Halo 4 either, I just had hoped that it would return for Halo 5.

I didn’t find it too bad. I mean when you think about it, if this follows the same lore of Halo 4’s multiplayer, then you aren’t in actual combat. Just a combat simulator with one another. Additionally, I believe only Spartan-II were subjected to emotional augmentations and suppressants. From what has been seen of later Model Spartans, they express more free will and emotion. They’ve become ‘more human’ so to speak. But I get where you’re coming from.

I hate kill cam no matter what game it’s in or where it came from. It hinders competitive play by giving up enemy locations.

This I can agree with, and I hope it is a disableable feature. I find it occasionally helpful, but at the same time part of the Halo experience, for me at least, was learning spawn times and using that to your advantage. More to the point though, what I don’t like is how the timer keeps counting and will spawn even if the original is still in play. Where as in previous Halo games, a weapon wouldn’t begin a respawn timer until it’s previous spawn was either out of ammo or had been dropped and despawned.

To this day I’m still torn about Friendly Fire. My rule of thumb is that if you’re playing with strangers (i.e. Matchmade games) it should be off, but if you’re playing competitively in customs (i.e. tournaments and such) it should be on. That way random people won’t kill you for power weapons, and if someone does that in a competitive scenario then you can talk it over and deal with it that way.

My main complaint with the pre beta was lack of JIP. JIP will probably be the deciding factor of me buying H5. If H5 does not have JIP, I might finally be done with the series. JIP worked very well in H4. Hopefully the full H5 beta has JIP. Especially in BTB. JIP is a MUST in BTB.

I actually like how cocky these guys are. Remember these spartans are just normal people premoted to “spartan.”

They are not the spartans that were kidnapped as a child and broken. So it makes complete sense that these are different.

I agree on the kill cams. I don’t want to see how I died. Make it a toggle option.
