The Fall Of Grifball

Grifball has become…Wow there is not really even a word for it.

In reach it was my favorite pastime. When the playlist came out for H4 I was thrilled with it.

These days however…Spawn killing, camping…EVERYWHERE.

I joined a game the other day, spawned…then died.

Well I think I spawned at least, it happened so fast I’m not sure. By happened I mean more then once in a row.

Until I killed one of the spawn campers, then got killed AGAIN.

Really it was three players spawn camping the hell out of us and the 4th was just dancing around with the ball near our side. Yes dancing! D=

What Happened, Is there a reason that Grifball is the home to spawn camping demons now?

It was not this bad the first couple months I played it.

To be 100% honest, it was like this for me in Reach nearly every game as well.

Many games would involve one or both teams hiding by the spawns and killing people while the ball carrier just goofed off until seconds left in the round.

I can’t speak for Halo 3 since I never was able to play H3’s matchmaking, but what you wrote accurately describes most (But not all) of my games in both Reach and Halo 4.

Wow so you have never really had a real game of grifball? Hmm maybe I was just lucky the first couple months it was out. I was playing it like everyday all day lol. My favorite is still the grav hammer and I have not played grifball really for quite a while haha

It ALWAYS had the worst connections too. Just that playlist.

It wasn’t always like that no, but a great deal of games would involve some guy who wasn’t interested in actually playing the game and instead parked himself by the capture plate killing people as they spawned.

Best example of this was when blue team’s bomb carrier died inches away from the capture plate and the guy that was harvesting kills by our spawning area ignored the ball/bomb and kept killing us as we spawned. We managed to get the bomb and ran off with it, but he just kept sitting there killing anyone who spawned. Was a tie-game at the time, and we scored and won. If he had just got up and grabbed the ball they would have won, but apparently his Invincible streak was more important to him than winning the game ^^

Kinda the bad part of grifball and commendations: they’ll be racking up the sprees to finish them.

I think that due to the smaller population there are less good players around, all that’s left is the spawn campers and commendation farmers.

The playlist should not have stats, end of story. Then the game would be played as it was meant to be played. Win/Loss should be the only thing that counts in grifball.

I never had very much problem with spawn killing. You tend to spawn pretty far away from the spawn killer, so you have adequate time to orient yourself and find him.

Deluca, you the man!
I agree 100% with this.

I rarely get spawn-killed though, but that might just be me. I personally enjoy Halo 4 Grifball a whole lot more than the version featured in Reach. The ability to be able to throw the ball also adds in a whole new layer of fun

A large percentage of people play trashy now in griftball. I had the same thing happen to me in halo reach.

I think the main problem is that it doesnt use rounds anymore, thus letting people camp at the ball spawn to get an unfair advantage

Getting stat padded on was far, far worse in Reach. It’s not pleasant nor is it good sportsmanship but it IS something that can be escaped.

Grifball Pro has rounds.

Halo 3s griffball was actually a blast. Reach screwed it up first by adding commendations which encouraged camping and farming. Instead of building off of Halo 3, we got Reach 2.0.

(Claps loudly for the genius who approved that decision)

Truth is, you’re going to encounter this kind of behaviour in all gametypes. Not just Grifball.

> I think the main problem is that it doesnt use rounds anymore, thus letting people camp at the ball spawn to get an unfair advantage

There are variants (Grifball Pro) that feature rounds. Once a point is scored, the next round begins.

I personally can’t say anything about Halo 3’s Grifball because I’ve never played it.

I’ve had awful experiences with Grifball in Reach though. Commendations encouraging people to play just for them and not properly play and enjoy the game, yuck.

Which is fun, but most people vote grifball standard. A shame, as I remember H3 grifball. Most people are in it to max out their hammer commie, and I usually never see a sword.

Personally, in MM I far prefer the normal Grifball. I play plenty of Pro style Grifball as it is. When I play MM, I want to have fun and for me I find the normal variant to be much more lolzy and entertaining.

Mileage may vary, of course.

Playing Grifball in all three games, I can tell you that Reach was the worst. Stat padding was quite frequent there. Halo 4 is probably the second worst. Halo 3’s Grifball was difficult to obtain a spawn trap due to the range of the Gravity hammer. The extended range of the gravity field allows for less movement and more spamming with the hammer.
