The evolutionary journey of Master Chief

During the Level “Reclaimer” The Librarian speeds up chiefs evolutionary journey which in turn gives him an immunity to the composer.

At the end of the Game we see chief walking into S deck yet he looks far more taller than he did earlier in the game using Palmer as a reference point. When The two first met Palmer noted how she thought he would be taller and then moved to stand next to him in which chief was hardly taller than her. Chief is 7’2 in armor while Palmers Height is 6’9 had she been wearing her helmet they would have been roughly the same height. Yet at the End of the Game chief looks far taller than palmer as if he grew a full foot and when his helmet was removed his eyes did indeed seem to be black or an extremely dark brown, not his normal brown in color.

Through subsequent discussion With my associates we got some support for what i have stated.

> Master Chief first encounters Commander Palmer on mission Infinity - prior to the Librarian encounter. Here are two screen captures that accurately represent height comparison:

> Librarian: Reclaimer. When I indexed mankind for repopulation, I hid seeds from the Didact. Seeds which would lead to an eventuality. Your physical evolution, your combat skin, even your ancilla Cortana. You are the culmination of a thousand life times of planning.
> Chief: Planning for what?
> Librarian: Reclaimer. The gene song I placed within you contains many gifts, including an immunity to the Composer. But it must be unlocked. Your evolutionary journey must be accelerated.
> /cutscene
> Cortana: Chief, what happened? Your bio-readings are all over the map.
> Chief: It’s a long story but I know what the Didact’s after.
> Cortana: I know that part. The Librarian filled me in when she snatched me from the system. But what I don’t know is what she did to you.
>
> As you stated, Mendicant - it appears the Master Chief’s accelerated evolution increased his height significantly. During mission Infinity he is roughly the same height as Commander Palmer, but come the ending cutscene…
>
> Master Chief and Commander Palmer 3
> Master Chief surrounded by scientists
>
> The Master Chief is arguably a foot or so taller than Commander Palmer by the ending cutscene. The Infinity scientists barely meet his waistline. With Commander Palmer at 6’9, I estimate that the Master Chief is somewhere between 8 and 9 feet tall. The legendary ending features the reveal of the Master Chief’s eyes as well:

prolouge Epilogue

1:13 notice the scientists size to the chief in armor
1:46-following. You can see how tight the armor space is on mark V
2:19-follow. Again Mark V but you can see how close the armor is
3:09 Armor again

I want everyone to understand that i do know the prologue is armor is Mark IV/V and not VI but it still shows how close the armor pieces are overall.
Now i can dig up more pics of Mark VI in halo 4 if needed but the armor on john was tight during the whole game up until the epilogue which we may now all watch.

0:58-1:00 you get to see johns full armor but look at his back during 0:58 and notice how spaced out the armor is.

1:00 you can see how the plates on his armor are stretched apart

1:23 Again he dwarfs palmer no getting around that whatsoever. As the images before and gameplay show you he wasn’t that much taller than her during the game. Hell she even makes a joke “I thought you’d be taller” i seriously doubt 343 threw that it just cus.

I personally think she looks stunned because chief looks far taller than he did when they met.But some of my friends say it is because they weren’t expecting him to be on S-deck. What do you think?

1:27 we see how the armor on his backed is space out a lot more than it normally was. For Palmer it is like this naturally but for chief his armor was always right close knit.

1:33 i was really hoping to get a good look at the scientist in comparison to chief but it looks like he is chest size which we know can’t be right. The area must be leveled along with the scientist being behind chief which throws everything off. But honestly that man would be to chiefs groin area with this height addition.

Hopefully you guys can get something out of this I have already exhausted the topic on my side and haven’t seen anything on waypoint.

The problem with this theory that the Chief grew is that his Mjolnir suit isn’t designed to suddenly “grow” with him. If some sort of growth occured, it happened after he reunited with the Infinity.

Chances are, the reason he looks taller than Palmer in the final cutscene is due to some camera/perspective trick, or it could be that the CG cutscene were done externally (I don’t recall if they were done in-house or not).

Haven’t seen you in awhile.

It isn’t actually his armor but the blacksuit stretching as your size always varies-especially with the constant Gravity no Gravity. Evolution had to be more than immunity to the composer as I interpreted as coming within a certain stage of our evolution as a species.

Roberto pretty much said the same thing with “with is an error in the graphic department”. But i don’t think palmer’s comment on height and then him looking taller at the end is a coincidence.

I’m kinda curious about the “hid seeds” part.

So, do you think she simply hid pockets of humans which she blessed with genetic superiority, or do you think she literally imprinted the didacts uh…genetics into them. Explaining their height/strength etc.

May I go on a mini-rant?

I think the Librarian that would have introduced technological and social advances over periods of time. conversely she might have actually hidden things that would have helped and guided humanity such as the assembly presumably being on Uranus (since ONI says it’s “too costly” to travel there").

This is where i can agree with Forthencho and see why he was so pissed in primordium. Humans aren’t Humans, we are just an on going experiment by the forerunners. What have we actually achieved? If the spartan project (coined our greatest achievement) wasn’t even ours then what is? Did we actually crack space travel or was that due to the librarian? Did we have years of peace because we were/are actually peaceful or because the librarian made us docile like the humans in cryptum?

Forerunner treachery. Pets

Been here and there, and very busy

Anyway: I understand that the black mesh is designed to stretch and squash, allowing for more free movement to the user and operations in almost any imaginable environment, However, for the Chief to have grown almost a foot taller, the amount of stretching the suit would have to do seems to be a little beyond what it’s made for. Further, this growth could only have taken place after the final encounter with the Didact (it is very clear that the Chief is not taller when he meets the Didact at the end of the game compared to when the Didact awakens). It just does not seem feasible.

Again, I point to the probability that the full-cg cutscenes were not made in house, and/or some trick of the camera (such tricks were purposefully used in LoTR to make Hobbits and Dwarves appear shorter than Humans and Elves).

I would also like to address the issue of the Chief’s eyes: why do we still assume his eyes were brown? Ever? I’ve seen no piece of fiction that says his eye were brown. Since the Fall of Reach comics, they have always been blue. The color of the Chief’s eyes is nearly impossible to discern in the final shot, as the shadows obscure his eyes.

The Chief was evolved so that he would be immune to the composer. Why do we assume this must result is some sort of physical change?

Legendary ending = Master Chief stare of death, you see those eyes you will die of awesomeness, what more do you need?

Yes he does seem different after the Librarian did what she did.

I get you with the black suit but remember they hardly took it off as i said even with the augs you are still going to grow a bit.

Well ofcourse he isn’t going to be growing during the game since everything is happening within a few days.

Ehh, i can understand that but i just don’t want to believe 343I would let that happen.

John’s eyes have always been brown i can probably get the quote from FoR. Only did the comics (which came out of nowhere) try saying that their eye color changed with the augmentation. That might have been addressed in FoR with it being a side effect that some had but not to the extent with all of them having blue eyes after the augs.

And if his eyes were to be blue they clearly don’t give any hint of that at the end.

Make sure you get a direct version of the legendary ending (aimed at no one in particular). Youtube fiddles with the contrast and stuff and makes the shadow around his eye sockets a hell of a lot darker than they intended. Add that to all the enhancers that are on the average picture/video viewing program and yeah.

Compare this

To this.

They just messed up in the cutscenes somehow and they ended up with a giant Chief because in those same cutscene Lasky ends up being as tall as Palmer.

That is still the Master Chief death glare.

You seem to have missed the point of my post…

I think we have two different points for it.

Mine is that it still makes it awesome either way. That said it makes him a bit more mysterious.

Its definitely noticeable, theres no doubting that. Theres no reason to really argue against you either, because she did mix up his genetics. But I just wonder why and for what purpose? How far did she accelerate us? Even ancient humans were not immune to the Composer…maybe she did put some sort of Forerunner/Didact gene in us.

Well the composer isn’t a natural occurrence which is why there is no natural immunity towards it.

I will say this now and before halo 5 comes out. We really need to watch john and how he behaves. I am not expecting him to be more aggressive but less blow everything up and more preservative.

Some of my Archivers Think the librarian is shaping john to take up the mantle himself much like the didact thinks he is doing.

I could see that, and for watching John before Halo 5, I doubt we will see him. Hopefully though.

Remember in the level “Shutdown”, and the Chief can hear the Didact talking but Cortana doesn’t hear/pick up anything? That’s Chief Geas. The Librarian also awakened Chief’s Geas, which is the Didact.

There’s been hints of Chief’s Geas in the book The Flood and in the CEA Terminal #1.

As for the height difference, not sure if because of the evolution or in-game/CGI difference. Maybe the “Thought you’d be taller” was a hint at the end of the game showing the evolution a bit. However, how would his armor work with this? Wouldn’t he be kinda squished up? (Now I just looked at an above post, and Lasky is apparently taller than Palmer, which he clearly isn’t in Spartan Ops, so this is just a CGI messed up thing)

343i did confirm Chief will show up in Spartan Ops. I’m definitely going to be watching him. See any differences/hints towards his evolution. I’ll also be making sure to see if he talks to himself (when he’s actually talking towards the Didact Geas).

I Did a check on that level about a month ago, Chief only hears the Didact’s voice after he walks into the first beam. Not sure what it means but i am leaning away from the Didact Gea’s Idea based on that.

John’s eyes are blue, always been shown to be blue, and in general I think the color change to the eyes happens infrequently, not all Spartans eyes begin to change colors due to the augmentations.

So I think in some Spartans it seems to simply be a side effect, more than a forced ordeal due to augmentation, just as some were crippled due to the process or left permanently scarred in some form.

I just enjoy that they actually showed his one facial scar, and how accurate his facial features appear, his eyes are also clearly blue in the end honestly similar to Carter’s from Reach. I believe the next time we see him and if we ever see him completely unarmored that he will look more rested and refreshed as well :).

If he appears in Spartan Ops and we get to fight alongside him, nerdgasm… over and over.

IMO, Chief was hearing him through the Domain. It may have been screwed up near the end of the Forerunner’s reign but this is 100,000 years later. The name of the Achievement for finding the first Terminal is “Contact the Domain” so maybe that’s exactly what he did. It’s also possible the Librarian gave him the means to access it.
