I capitalized “weapon” in the title because you can use the Repulsor to launch Sword users away from you but just speaking in terms of the weapons and not the equipment, the Sword currently has no true counter. I actually like the Bulldog and I find it fun to use, but the original Shotgun was the counter to Halo’s melee weapons by giving players a window of time to get a one-hit kill on a Sword or Hammer user if they were quick enough and if they shoot at just the right time. The Bulldog’s fastest kill time is one shot combined with a melee, but you can’t do that to a Sword user as far as I can tell (meleeing a Sword user has yet to work for me regardless of their health or shields). As it stands right now, when you couple this lack of a weapon counter with the abysmally short radar range and the movement speed, you almost always have to take the death if someone is rushing you with a Sword. I know you could also stick a Sword user with a grenade but I feel like there should be a weapon that also counters melee weapons, not just grenades and equipment

But as you said the repulsor does hard counter it the thruster and grapple soft counter.
The br and range weapons outplay it and the spnkr is a hard counter to it also.

Yup. I loved the dynamic with the old shotgun and energy sword. Sword was just overall better at getting kills than the shotgun but the shotgun could counter the sword.
It really is a shame the OG shotgun isn’t in the game.

Hammer counters it well, but of course they both aren’t available at the same time except in Fiesta. The old shotgun countered in the old Halo games, but this new one doesn’t counter very well unless you see them rushing you and have time to get 3 shots in before they reach you. The two counters I can think of currently are a plasma or spike grenade stick as they sprint at you head-on, or a repulsor blast to gain some distance and finish shooting them to death.
Edit. Oh yeah, a skewer shot no-scope works well too.
Well I guess there are some weapons that can counter it, I guess I just liked having a true counter weapon to it that doesn’t come with the risk of blowing yourself up or using a weapon that is tough to use like the Skewer, although that’s probably more of a me-problem. For some reason I find the Skewer to be the hardest weapon to use in Infinite but it could definitely get rid of a Sword user if its user can aim (which apparently excludes me lol)

Repulsor, Skewer, Hammer, or my favorite, simply backing up and shooting. And in case it wasn’t obvious, melee.
The best counter to the sword is awareness. If you know there is an enemy with a sword you have to keep space between yourself and the sword.
This isn’t true for Fiesta because anyone can have any weapon at any time.
I’ve killed Sword and Hammer users with the Plasma Pistol and the Disrupter by simply giving myself space to operate.
I’ve found the heatwaves verticals fire mode is great for swords. Can easily two shot them from a distance if your aim is steady enough, and if they close the gap, swap to horizontal and just finish them with the cone.
If the guy with the energy sword pops out 3 ft in front of you, he should win most of the time. Thats what makes it a strong weapon. The counter to melee weapons in halo is baiting out the aggressive play style that comes with the weapon. If you know where he is dont push in, especially if he is in a room. Throw nades and hang back. Teamwork helps to but thats not always available.
I will say that I do miss having the on reaction melee parry without having to turn to the grav hammer for that “perk”. Idk if 343 thinks it has a place but I miss it.
I concur, the Heatwave rips through unga bunga Swordsmen like butter.
It’s those pesky campers with the sword which are a problem but hey, camping has no real counterplay.
Is it just me and my friends, or does the sword stop your melee hits from registering a lot of the times? So many times I’ve gotten sword users into melee range and I melee them when they swing and only I die. My friends say the same. If they allowed you to kill them that way would you be happy?
Were swords and shotties ever really on the same map anyways? The counter to the sword is the same that it always has been, distance.

Nah it’s definitely not just you, even if the Sword user has no shields you can’t trade kills with a melee in Infinite
Can’t remember all the maps and their weapons but I know The Pit in Halo 3 had two Shotguns and a Sword and I think Lockout on Halo 2 also had both. Maybe Last Resort from Halo 3 too, I’m thinking it has both. There’s definitely maps with both weapons
Don’t forget Infection where it is THE game to get swords and shotguns. Which I hope is added in the future but currently I hope they add the original shotgun to Infinite to coincide with the bulldog because they are 2 functionally different shotguns now.
I’m glad to hear that people have found pretty good counters for the Sword in this game. I guess it’s just me but I just felt like I have a harder time dealing with the Sword in this game than in other Halos, even 5 where you move faster while wielding it. I think maybe the radar is one of the main reasons I feel that way, by the time they’re on radar it’s too late and map awareness doesn’t always mean that one can’t sneak up behind everyone or even run right past a teammate without them noticing
