In every Halo game, there has been a “box-canyon” map. IE, the classic map with two opposing bases in a narrow playspace.
In my opinion, these types of maps are no-longer practicable, as the overwhelming amount of firepower players can now access,BR/DMR(both capable ranged weapons, and they are easily available to individuals and whole teams), as well as rockets, splazers, sniper rifles, plasma launchers, missile pods, fuel rods, beam rifles, focus rifles (not even mentioning the vehicle mounted armaments) - all effective ranged anti vehicle/infantry weapons, as opposed to CE, where the only decent weapons you could use at long range were the sniper, rockets and magnum.
This mass of long ranged weapons make players on long, open maps very vulnerable.
I’m not saying we should go back to only three LR weapons, or completly abandon “Canyon” maps, i’m trying to say that PREHAPS now is the time to lose focus on this kind of map, and instead aim for more “unique” BTB maps such as the awsomeness that was Zanzibar or Sidewinder.
Thanks for reading!(If you did!)
Discus and flame!
The range of the BR in halo 3 was fine maps were mid sized and, range was good.
In halo Reach the DMR’s range is just to far maps have to, be made 2X bigger just to make it work .
Im really hopping that for HALO 4 they got it right
Only time will tell
This is why I’ve always said Blood Gulch and Coag are overrated and Valhalla reigns supreme: on the latter, it’s less possible to get spawn-sniped from the other side of the map.
Yeah, Valhalla was definitely the best of the 4 maps.

Agreed. Which is why this is the one map I REALLY want to see in H4. Halo wouldn’t be Halo without a box canyon.
I don’t know how anyone could really argue that Valhalla wasn’t better than BG. Only nostalgia could be a real reason.
Rename Valhala, and you’ve got a deal. Best BG inspired map, worst name.

Well, they are similar but the design is still different enough that some could really prefer blood gulch. there are probably players who like base to base sniping and blood gulch/coagulation/hemorrhage (not sure which is actually biggest) has some of the longest sight lines of any map in any halo. snipers paradise, in a way.
