The end of John-117

I was just on youtube seeking new music and a Halo gmv popped up based around Halo 4 cutscenes.
The clip eclipsed with the scene where the Didact fired the composer on the station orbiting the Halo and the scientists atomised and the Chief collapsed. Not having played Halo 4 for quite some time, it brought the game back to me and that it’s called the “Reclaimer Saga,” not a trilogy, and it made me wonder how 343i will end Johns’ story.

I’m not saying that I think his character will hang up his bucket in Infinite, and the Reclaimer saga centring on him could continue for another two or three games (I doubt it).
But how do you want to see his story finish?
And by that I don’t mean the entirety of the Halo universe, I just mean his personal story. What kind of ending or send off do you think he deserves?

I personally hope he and Blue Team ascend the happenings of the galaxy in a manner and I can’t exactly articulate what I mean by that.

But if he ends by dying, I really hope that he gets a really simple and understated death scene, not something over the top and cliche. The composer firing and him collapsing almost fit that bill in my mind’s eye.

So share your thoughts on how to hang up the chiefs bucket

Self-sacrifice to save humanity or some important target. He’s a warrior who’s finished the fight and saved humanity countless times. He should go out fighting until the end.

Well I can’t imagine i’d buy a fps halo without MCC, pretty annoyed by his fake appearence in HW2 tbh so hopefully he won’t have a send off until we say bye to Halo

I don’t remember a bad Halo game with John Spartan in it, he’s necessary for a good game.

Halo 5’s mess and 343i attempt to go back to the Bungie Era Chief is evidence there is no Halo without 117. The piss poor introduction of new characters in 5 in an attempt to force us to connect with empty imitations of Chief and Blue Team failed miserably. I couldn’t help but agree with evil Cortana’s massive burn of Locke and Fireteam Osiris in the final mission.

I want him to have a peaceful death, he deserves it.

Halo 3: ODST begs to differ.

Remember Reach Spartan/Sangheili/whatever.

Topic: Personally, I think he should go MIA, kinda like Halo 3, so his legend carries on as if he’s still alive but that realistically he’s dead. Something like that. He could still be alive, but assumed dead, just like before Halo 4.

I was afraid people would argue he was in Reach, in his cameo at the of The Pillar of Autumn, so I just mentioned the game that doesn’t have a single mention of the Chief at all. Plus Reach was a tad controversial for some halo fans, so whether or not it was great depends on who you ask.

What’s a “fake appearance” and how did that happen in Halo Wars 2?

It’s generally accepted as a great Halo game and Chief wasn’t in it. Just because he was an Easter Egg doesn’t mean he’ll have any influence whatsoever. It’s a simple cameo like the Borealis in both Portal 2 and HL2:EP2 (except that the latter would have influence on the next game, but since VALVe is lazy af, it will remain part-cameo, part-important to plot).

Wha- What do you mean? Chief wasn’t supposed to appear in HW2. He was just referred to fill in the crew of the Spirit of Fire that have been Lost With All Hands since 2531.

It’s probably more likely he’ll retire since at some point the chief will be worn out, humanity will want to care for him since he’s been constantly working plus killing off the chief would lead to a lot of hate towards 343i so I doubt 343i would take that risk plus the actor will probably want to retire the role eventually so it be safer to just keep his stories in the books if he chooses to leave. Also I don’t think any form of self-sacrifice would go well with the community, I don’t want a repeat of this since it would just irritate me.

I don’t think it’ll happen simply because I don’t think Microsoft will allow it. They can’t lose the very image of halo. Plus since 343 finally realized that they need to focus more on Chief it won’t happen.

I don’t think they’re going to kill him off, not for awhile at least.

And if they do, it’ll probably be something like a marine accidentally back-smacking and one-shotting him

It was never John’s personal story. Halo used to be a plotdriven- and not a characterdriven story. I hope they bring back this aspect back. Surely you can add a little depth to his character like in H3, but I wouldn’t go further.

And John will likely not die. Some people do not realize how iconic / popular his character has become. The master chief is the face of Halo (surely you can do spinoff games without him), he’s the face of Xbox.
Even people, who don’t play Halo, know him. Hell, even people who don’t usually play games do recognize him.

The Master Chief is one of the most marketable characters in Gaming History, so he won’t go anywhere

Thats how he should go out.

I don’t entirely agree on the first sentence. Not exactly disagreeing either.
Halo has always been a great blend of plot and character driven, it’s just that the in-game character progression for John has been in drips and drabs.
Perhaps this was something that I’ve always read a little too closely into, but am I the only one who’s perceived John’s lack of extensive speech, but all the same verbal and tonal responses hand in hand with action toward Cortana’s (and other characters) expressions and emotions to be a roundabout way of exploring his character.
Like an indirect view into his character.

Considering 343 is refocusing their attention to chief I doubt anything major will happen anytime soon. Still, I would like to see the chief story end sometime soon before franchise fatigue kicks in. My worse fear is that that they milk halo out long enough that I no longer care what happens to the chief or the rest of the universe. Also, lets not forget the main feature of the chief is the voice and the voice actor is an aging man who will retire or die (god forbid).

That raises another good point actually!

What do folks think would happen if the retired Steve Downes and contracted a new voice actor? Obviously, they’d get someone who sounds as close to original as possible, but it could never be quite the same.
