but he is not evil…
Well, according to the latest Halo Bulletin, the Ancient Evil has yet to be revealed. So, it’s possible the Cryptum see in the E3 trailer contains the Didact, but he may end up being an ally.

Well, if we’re to fight an enemy more powerful than the Covenant, and bent on vengeance and annihilation, we’ll need an ally.
I agree with the OP, I dont believe the Didact is evil. afterall, what reasons would he have for being our enemy? And dont say the Human - Forerunner war - By reading Cryptum and Primordium it’s clear that he regrets some of the things he did to humans, and since then his hatred for them has gone away, espicially after Bornstellar became the Didact.
The thing is that he never seemed evil.
Yet again we arrive at the master builder.
I agree, he’s definitely not evil. All the clues/signs relating to him are so odd…
I am with you guys. Sure he lost his children during Human-Forerunner, but the novels clearly shows his regret toward his action. No sign of evil within him.
Then again, there is also posibility of him going rampant…which is highly unlikely.
We also have to keep in mind what Greg Bear said.
He hinted at TWO Didacts: Bornstellar with Didact soul and actual Didact that actually pretended to be dead.
Faber who disappeared during the war.
I really doubt we can take Timeless One’s words literally. He could be lying, and there are more Precursors. It’s just weird to introduce that kind of race in a novel meant to give hint at next gamesm and get rid of it within the novel.

I think the actual Didact is dead and now Bornstellar is the Didact. I had the same beliefs about the antagonist not being the Didact until I got to the end of Primordium. The Primordial made it pretty clear that the forerunners were tested and failed and the humans are the true successors to be tested.
I felt a hint of envy from the Didact that may give him motive to combat the humans for supremacy yet again. Couple that with the E3 trailer where someone mentions “I have long dreamt of this day Reclaimer” and I suspect that it’s the Didact finally getting the chance to redeem the Forerunners. Also, look at the terminals in Halo: Anniversary, 343 makes it clear that without the Librarian around to tame him, the Didact could pose a threat to the humans.
However, there are plenty of things that contradict my theory. For one, the trailer mentions an “ancient evil” and if you’ve read the any of the books, you know that the Primordial is directly referred to as ancient on more than one occasion.
One thing I am pretty sure of is that we’ll probably combat the Didact with the Forerunner and the Primordial along with the Flood over the course of the next three games. Just in what order will it all play out…?
Maybe Didact thinks we have a reason to hate him? Maybe, as a random example, if the promethean knights really were the result of ripping the souls out of humans and putting them in machines, maybe he thinks we know that and hate him.
Maybe he’s guarding the real “ancient evil”, and he thinks were trying to get revenge for what he did, so he’s hostile.
Buuuut I have no idea. Everything seems so contradictory.
