343 seems to have leaned into a narrative direction giving Master Chief an incredible amount of depth, and I absolutely love it.
In the campaign scene at E3 the way that chief cradles the dead marine, and then feels hesitant about taking the AR from the fallen marine… his body language shows a deep respect and remorse for his fallen soldiers. It conveys the enormous weight of the responsibility to save his comrades and species again. It’s all accentuated by the soundtrack in an awesome way too.
Master Chief is being presented in a way that a whole new generation is about to fall in love with.
I will say this is the one thing that I enjoyed seeing. It’s subtle, but it definitely reminds me more of how he was in 4. Even his meeting with the Weapon shows discomfort and I imagine we’ll see more of that as he engages with her in the game.

This was such a lovely touch. Brought tears to the eye…

The deep respect for the fallen there was really good.

No, 343 has finally stopped trying to give him, “an incredible amount of depth” if anything.
I mean to say they finally realized CE/2/3’s characterization of using fewer words with greater impact, then having body language and actions display his true feelings is the way to go.
He already had lots of depth. Showing not telling is the best way to write any story. So many writers miss the golden rules of writing these days and it’s sad. It’s like the issue we face now where many people forget you need to write an ending to your story before trying to write the path towards it. It’s why so many things end up with messy story lines and rushed endings. Chief didn’t need to be emotional or more “human”. He always was very human and down to earth in the way he reacted to what was happening around him. I never understood why they tried to force this sudden personality change it all comes off as just egotistical writers thinking they can do better while forgetting the basics.
Anyways despite how I actually wasn’t looking forward to Halo Infinite’s campaign I might have changed my mind just by that cutscene showed today if anything. I’m looking forward to seeing more and making a final decision ASAP.
Even the way he takes out and inserts the AI chip with “new Cortana” was well done. Lots of subtle moments that show how 343i is giving Chief a lot of well-deserved attention.
I get what you’re saying and I absolutely loved what they showed for campaign, but I do miss the quippy and more playful side of Chief. It really feels like that has been lacking in 4/5. It just seems like he’s always brooding or they’ve taken him too seriously and forget to have fun with his banter and mannerisms.
things like:
”Sir, to give the covenant back their bomb” - Chief tossing the grenade in The Maw to show he’s just gonna blow it all up. - ”relax, I’d rather not piss this thing off” - Him pulling out the rocket launcher when Cortana asks if they could possibly make anymore noise - “You told me there wouldn’t be any cameras” - Him smacking his helmet to shut Cortana up after being teleported upside down - And what I think is his most underrated line, “that’s a first” after guilty spark said he was mistaken.Halo 1-3 were filled with admittedly corny but funny moments like those and I kind of miss them. I appreciate them taking a deeper dive with Chief but I wish they’d still have a bit more fun with him.
I am looking forward to see Master Chief’s story again in the upcoming Halo Infinite. I am also looking forward to see the relationship between Master Chief and the new AI character in the new Halo video game.

Amen man. As a fan of the lore / books / side content of Halo, this has me hyped. H5 left me confused and unfulfilled, frankly, and I think it is turning around for the better!

You’re totally right! I hope we get some new stand out one liners mixed in there too!
Thinking about all the great dialogue like that in the past just brought the IWHBYD skull to mind for me too. Now I’m more pumped
