The cycle of "copying"

Here’s something I have noticed.

Halo 4 comes out in 2012. It clearly copied, or let’s say took inspiration from, CoD. Things that were well known in CoD like loadouts and killstreaks (ordinance) were suddenly in Halo for the first time.

CoD: AW comes out in 2014. Things that originally came from Halo like high jumps, camo, and Thruster were suddenly in CoD for the first time.

Halo 5:G will come out in 2015. One could argue that Halo 5 copied CoD: AW, but it can easily be argued that it didn’t. That is up for you to decide.

CoD: BO3 will also come out in 2015. While we barely have any info, the game is going to be set in 2065 and will feature genetically enhanced humans (sound familiar?).

Am I the only one who is sensing a sort of pattern?

Honestly, it’s just hard to be original anymore. Everything has been done by someone at some point.

As for Halo 5 copying AW? Not a chance, we saw the multiplayer trailer long before AW was even announced. The thruster pack was even already in Halo 4.

Sure… if you don’t count the fact that each of these games were already in development for years before the one it “copied” was even revealed.

Halo wasn’t the first FPS. It wasn’t the first to have a “super soldier.” It wasn’t the first to have shields. The setting is what makes a game unique not necessarily the gameplay mechanics. I mean you could argue that Forza copied Pole Position because both had car racing.

As with every professional field, there are precedents that lend to your projects. In the design industry, studios are constantly borrowing ideas from each other. There’s nothing wrong with it.

John Spartan in Demolition Man…
A man of action returns to the world after X amount of years frozen in cryosleep to be judged as an obsolete caveman, and is tasked to hunt down a madman with the help of an attractive tour guide XD

In this day and age it is impossible to do anything in games, film, media and so on without “copying” another. Space marines fighting aliens wasn’t new, nor super soldiers, aliens hell bent on killing humans, ancient civilizations and so on. The same goes with gameplay, there isn’t anything these days that hasn’t been done. You’re gonna step on some toes when adding new things and that’s really apparent in this community more than any other.

There’s only so many tropes for a military shooter to pursue. Adding ones that work well with gameplay is even smaller.

CoD is more about the genre itself, whereas Halo is about a specific setting, so CoD goes around trying out different things to change things up, even if gameplay remains pretty similar (and honestly while yes they have a lot of similar games, i’d say the franchises’ change over its lifespan is about the same as any others).

I think seemless vehicle entry/exit and later vehicle boarding were the first of their time. But yeah vast majority of halo isn’t so much the elements themselves, but how well they were designed, and how appealing they were presented.

Games are still an art form in their infancy and when one adds something new and exciting others will incorporate it not just to remain competitive but because every new good idea enhances the genre.

I doubt it.

Is it just me, or is it the fact that everyone is running out of ideas for the fps genre?

Okay lets be realistic here.
Do you know how things work with OS and software in general?
Those are way ahead of time, when they release they are already working on a new one.
I dont know how long it takes but lets say 3 years.
You get software thats 3 years old, same with games.
Halo was there for longer.
Then suddenly Call of Duty pops up.
You then think Halo is a copy of Call of Duty but those people never showed up anywhere.
Where do they come from and how can they have software thats years old and then sell it as new?
Well I think I just caught the snake!
I say off with her head!
Halo is gonna rule I will make sure that this is truth.

I say how it is I say Call of Duty steals.
Bad luck that they are only good with 360 stuff lol

Said tour guide was starting to become a madwoman too, and John had to keep her calm while protecting her Doritos from Captain Rio de Janerio
