The Current State of Theater Mode

I wasn’t exactly sure whether to put this in the Master Chief Collection section or the Halo 5 section since it actually applies to both. Basically as it currently stands in both games is a husk of what it once was. The Xbox DVR is not a replacement by any means when looking at the history of Theater mode.

Now this video doesn’t have a lot of views and the creator doesn’t have many subscribers but he really does raise great points about theater mode as it stands on the Xbox One. I’d like to know what the community thinks. I personally believe that theater mode hit it’s peak in terms of power and popularity in the days of Halo 3 and Reach and I hope that 343 might eventually give us back the power we had back then to save, render and share films directly in theater mode and not through the DVR.

I personally can’t stand the Xbox dvr, so much that I don’t even bother trying to save a video, which was one of my favorite things to do in halo 3.

I understand and agree with this sentiment. I am unfortunately though addicted to saving films especially when it comes to Halo 1 and 2 classic where saved films were never available unless you used a DVR. Even so, the Xbox One DVR system is horrendous. For Halo 2 Anniversary, 3 and 4, games we use to be able to save entire films from in theater mode, the DVR does not fulfill our needs in these regards but I’m probably preaching to the converted.

My hope is that someone at Microsoft/343i will see this and maybe understand that this is an issue that affects the community in a negative way. The level of community interaction in Halo 3 and Reach peaked purely because sharing media (films, pictures, maps and game types) was so heavily emphasized by Bungie at the time. There were so many ways to share media and everyone wanted to get their work put on the top of Bungie’s in game list.

Theater allows for videos and screenshots from both a different perspective + potential lack of HUD getting in the way, and allowing one to get to areas that they would otherwise not be allowed to access, whether it be due to triggers to end the level/move to a different area, or just not being able to chain jump up to said position.

Example: Trying to get internal shots of the GA-TL1. Only games that this is possible in are Halo 1 and Halo CE. Halo 1 has both an end-level trigger around the GA-TL1 and a time limit to deal with if one manages to somehow glitch past the trigger (if possible). Halo CE both doesn’t into screenshots for some reason, and the HUD is unable to be switched off (AFAIK).
