The Cryptum, the Didact, it all makes sense.

If you haven’t seen it, the cover and name of the third Greg Bear novel has been revealed, as seen on Waypoint’s homepage

As seen in the Halo 4 E3 demo, we saw the Orange Ball of Death (A.K.A, the Cryptum). Cryptums are chambers that the Forerunners were exiled to for committing a great crime or atrocity. It has been speculated that contained in the Cryptum in Halo 4, is the Didact. One might ask, “But the Didact was a good guy, what could he have done wrong?” The description and Cover art of Silentium answers this (the Orange Ball of Death is on the cover).

> Only the Ur-Didact and the Librarian—a husband and wife pushed into desperate conflict—hold the keys to salvation. Facing the consequences of a mythic tragedy, one of them must now commit the greatest atrocity of all time—to prevent an unmatched evil from dominating the entire universe.

Now as said above, do anything REALLY bad in the Forerunner society, you get the shaft and get shoved into a Cryptum. The fact that one of them has to commit the “greatest atrocity of all time (most likely the Didact from all the hints we’ve been getting)” explains the Cryptum we saw in the demo, and that because of this “great atrocity”, he gets put in there and is now trying to find a way out.

But that’s my theory, what do you guys (and girls) think?

Don’t really like it. It’s an atrocity but a necessary one. Either they fire the rings or they all get consumed by the flood and the galaxy is forever doomed to never harbor any new, free life. Only if the didact decided to enter the cryptum himself, to help get over his shame after blowing up the galaxy.

Probably has something to do with there being two didacts, something we don’t know about yet.

That part is interesting. I think I may have an idea of what thst greatest atrocity may be. They must exterminate all humans and covenant whatever etc, again because they have learned news about the flood outbreak. They must not let the flood regain strength and feed upon the humans and covies, so they make the choice of killing us all.

The Librarian doesn’t want this to happen. I think she is the blue AIs in the E3 trailer. The Didact has made the choice to do it himself. That’s my theory.

… interesting.

But I have a feeling that this great atrocity is activating the Array, wiping out all life in the galaxy, the greatest crime a Forerunner could ever commit. The Didact could have put himself in there in shame, or other survivng Forerunners did it.

But that still doesn’t make him the Ancient Evil. It just supports the fact that he is in the Cryptum.
He may have been put in there, he may want to get out, but why does he want to take revenge on Humanity and destroy us? It still doesn’t make sense…

And the bulletin mentions, during the Comic-Con stuff, that we’ll be introduced to an Ancient Threat. Is this just more in-depth Promethean AI? Or a look at the Ancient Evil himself/themselves?

So what your saying is that the didact sets off the halos himself, then locks himself away in the cryptum.

I personaly think he gets locked up before the halos go off and he is sent to the sheild world that we have in halo 4.

And the librain sets the halos of and her and the rest of the forrunners are whiped out.

But i could be Wrong.

Wait… so the Didact returns to destroy us for our contact with the Flood because we could spread them again? The Librarian, who also survived, doesn’t want this to happen, so she rebels against the Didact directly? Then Humanity is caught in a Librarian VS Didact struggle? My head hurts…

But I think that greatest atrocity part is referring to the Forerunner-Flood War, that time, not Halo 4. I could be wrong…

And it still seems like the Didact should be smart enough to realize that the Flood isn’t really a threat anymore, it was stopped on the Ark. Even if he did want to do it, what about the vengeance part? What does revenge have to do with your theory?

I wish Silentium didn’t come out after Halo 4… so many questions!

How does your head hurt, you explained it exactly the same way I did, which made perfect sense (as far as understanding what I said). Forerunner Flood war can easily be tied to what I said. The forerunners know what the flood are capable of, and do not want to take the risk of another large scale flood outbreak.

I believe the master builder is locked in the cryptum because he went crazy and wanted to capture the didact. The didact was helped by humans so wouldn’t want to hurt them. The master builder wants revenge on humans for helping the didact

Well remember that the Flood came from outside the galaxy, so they’re not truly gone

I’m pretty sure it’s referring to the firing of the halo array. Which indeed exterminates all humans and well…everything else.

Hold on… what is with the Ur-Didact part?

Am I missing something? Or does Ur-Didact mean something?

Yes, the same thing I said pretty much. Maybe he is looking forward to activating the rings again.

If you think about it, it’s a parallel to the 26th century Halo storyline. A good person (Halsey) commits an atrocity (SPARTAN-II Program) to prevent even worse things from happening (Insurrection). I guess history does repeat itself. I think it’ll be the Librarian who commits the atrocity.

> Hold on… what is with the Ur-Didact part?
>
> Am I missing something? Or does Ur-Didact mean something?

Ur means first, original. So apparently the original didact is now chilling with the librarian, when last we heard the born-didact was.

Something’s up.

>

I’m not sure…

But what could she have done that would be considered greater than activating the Array?

The Array should be the greatest atrocity…

Wow… so Faber didn’t kill the Ur-Didact?

Didact VS Didact?

So many questions… and none can be answered yet!

Yeah, I think that’s what the Librarian will do.

Maybe the fact that as a life worker she did try to perserve the forrunner race. But scince the flood was advancing so fast they had no choice but to activate the halo array, whipping out the forrunners.

Of all people, why her? That doesn’t fit her character at all. The Didact is in more of a position to activate the Halo Array. He had no problem doing it before.
