I recently got 2 new Mega Bloks/Construx sets that both came with req packs. I already unlocked all of the Mega Bloks emblems prior to these packs. This is what I got.
As you can see, the Mega Bloks packs have practically no worth once you’ve gotten the emblems. You’d think 343 would better reward people who support one of its most successful partnerships.
Yes I agree… Some stuff should be left as an exclusive. It was pretty disappointing to me as well when I used my mega blocks code and already had the emblem, same with jinx.
I’ll never understand why people complain about something that they were given for free. I have a few of the megabloks/mega constructs figures on my desk at work and they are quite nice. A few boosts as a bonus for picking up a toy seems like a nice thing to me. Even if it isn’t something you wanted, it’s just a free bonus to the toy you (presumably) did want.
I can see the argument. If something is marketed in a way that you think you are getting something special or exclusive, but in reality it isn’t special or exclusive then you are likely to feel ripped off, especially if that bonus was a large part of why the purchase was made. I’m not a fan of deceptive marketing (like a season pass that doesn’t cover “expansions” or a mega bloks req pack that isn’t exclusive). You can be technically/legally correct and still be “customer service” wrong.

I agree the toys are exceptional. I have a very large collection, and IMO they are much better than LEGO. But, as you can see from my video, my free daily login contained a legendary item, which is better than the free Mega Bloks packs’ contents. I’d buy the construction sets with or without the packs included, but if a product is going to come with one, it might as well be something to get hyped about.

It’s not so much the reqs that matter to me. I just wish 343 would let there be exclusive items for stuff and not cram every cosmetic in the req system. It would be way cooler if the only way to get the mega block emblem would be from a mega block req pack. Along with other items from their related product. Jinx emblem, the H5 console emblem among others. It is pretty lame every is crammed in the req system.

I do buy them for the sets. I had a decently sized collection of them before this was even a thing, and when the game first came out, I got one of them with a pack and thought the pack would give rare items, but I just got an emblem and some boosts and was therefore disappointed.
Last Christmas I got a very big set with a pack, but its contents were equally lackluster, giving me uncommon boosts rather than common ones. Still, the set was awesome.

When I was in grad school there was diner about three blocks from my apartment. I would be working with some of my mates till two or three in the morning most nights. On Fridays, I used to treat myself by going to that diner and getting breakfast whenever we got done. Most of the time the waitress was a septuagenarian woman named Rose. It was usually pretty dead at three am so I used to chat a lot with Rose. After a while I noticed that when she was there I would get a couple of extra strips of bacon. It never occured to me to say, “Hey Rose? That free bacon is nice, but a steak would better.” That kind of thing would be impolite, disrespectful, and frankly downright obnoxious. I’ve always been under the impression that the appropriate action when someone gives you a gift or offers you something for free e is to be thankful regardless of content. You feel differently, but I don’t think I’m capable of grasping your reasoning.
This seems like the same situation. You’re getting something for free. You may not want it, you may want something more grand. Regardless of that it’s something extra. Something you weren’t owed and didn’t purchase that you got for free.

I disagree with your last point. Your not paying for the Req pack; your paying for the toy. They could have included nothing with the mega blocks set. The fact that you got anything as a free bonus is a nice gesture.
Of all forms of microtransactions, I find digital data tied to physics paraphernalia the worst model. Physical things are not as widely available as other, digital forms of microtransactions. It doesn’t matter if you partner with food/drink companies, toys, or whatever; some places won’t carry those things, meaning some people who are willing to buy them won’t be able to (not easily). Nintendo’s amiibo are probably the worst example because in addition to granting digital benefits in the games, the amiibo themselves are collectibles that are hard to find, especially the really popular ones.
I’m glad that the only thing tied to the mega blocks set are basic REQs and an emblem. It means that players won’t feel compelled to buy the toys just for the digital goods, which inevitably happens when “exclusive” digital goods are tied to physical goods.

The emblem isn’t tied to the set though. Anyone can get it from regular req packs. I fell there should be some cosmetics tied to certain products, achievements, or whatever. That only players who got them can have. There would be nothing wrong with that as cosmetics don’t effect the game in any way.

I disagree with that point too. I’m not a fan of “exclusivity” in games, setting up this whole mentality of “haves” and “have nots”. I like it when everything in a game is earnable within the game by everyone. Things will work themselves out that not everyone ends up getting those things, because some people just won’t put in the time for whatever mechanism is required to get them. But more than that, on a personal level, I don’t have the desire to base my look off of what is most rare. Take Achilles, for example: available to get only through Halo 5. It’s a tough slog, sure, but it’s doable. But I don’t wear it because I personally think it looks stupid. I could care less how many people have it. Same goes for armor types that I like, and weapon skins, and assassinations, etc. Like, someone else wearing sticker shock wouldn’t take away from my desire to wear it. Personally I find that the random loot nature of getting customization items in Halo 5 is less fulfilling than previous Halo games, and I wish more armor sets were tied to in-game achievements/commendations/activities. Instead what we got were things tied to exclusive REQ packs, external things, and a whole 'nother game (MCC). Keeping those things exclusive would mean it takes a whole lotta extra money to get everything in the game. So if the exclusivity you wanted existed in Halo 5, all it would tell you is who spent more money on Halo stuff, which isn’t particularly interesting.
The kind of negativity that the “have vs have not” mentality promotes was even more apparent in Destiny 1. Honestly the way some players acted towards other based on what they had in the game was disgusting. But I think it comes down to a philosophical difference. I don’t expect people who want exclusivity to change their minds; I can only really hope that games don’t put too much state in exclusivity.

I’m pretty sure the only exclusive in-game item you can get from buying something in real life is the Apollo emblem. But anyway, I agree with Chimera. Tying exclusive in-game codes to physical items is stupid, and it’s much more rewarding earning stuff like players did in Halo 3.
i kinda agree, they should put more mega construx emblems and skins in, but you cant forget that you are still getting a mc set, and the req packs are just a bonus.
