In the recent leaks of Game Informer, the Covenant was briefly mentioned during a description of the first mission, with an Elite attacking the Chief, etc etc etc. Eventually, it is revealed that there is an entire Covenant fleet outside the Forward Unto Dawn. I know that they have been stated to be the least of your worries, but this whole reveal really made me curious as to exactly how the Covenant fits in the story.
Seems to me they are throwing them in there because they aren’t too sure how well the new enemy would play so they need a sure thing. Honestly I’d rather not fight the Covenant again for the millionth time, but whatever.
I’d laugh my butt off if the covenant were attacking chief outside the planet, then forerunners find the chief in distress, send in a few dreadnoughts and wipe the covenant *** ships in seconds.
Personally, I think that the Covenant encountered were just a rogue faction. Even Cortana said that their armor wasn’t right. They were possibly attracted to the ship by her beacon. I think that it is also said in the article that the first mission serves as something to get us used to the Halo we know and love before they ‘change the rules’ and face us with something we haven’t encountered before and will for the remainder of the game.
It does make sense canon wise… Only the Arbiter and a few other Elites actually liked the humans… The others on the other hand Only fought with them because the knew the threat of the flood but would of rathered stuck with the covenant (shipmaster and the rest of the elites)… and of course none of the rest of the covyies liked humanity anyway… so for them to be attacking chief from the get go makes sense, but i doubt that the covenant will be main enemies again

Sure if you throw away every other source of canon outside of Halo: Glasslands.

Um, no. I doubt they would stick with the group exterminating their race. Or did the Great Schism not happen in Halo 2?

Pretty vague. The human rebel world of Venezia has a population of humans, Brutes, Grunts and Jackals, Jackals are actually trading with ONI and the UNSC by the way.
