I’m having a hard time understanding why so many people are upset with the direction 343 is taking that enemy. The covenant may have been strong enough to bring humanity to near extinction in the past but that is no longer the case.
The covenant has been getting weaker and weaker after each game. During halo ce’s campaign we had managed to overcome them and hand them their first major defeat by blowing up the ring. In halo 2s campaign we noticed there was a power struggle going on between the elites and the brutes. The prophets ordered the brutes to kill the elites instead of making them work together : resulting in the elites rebelling which in turn made the covenant army even weaker. Not to mention a prophet died.
As a result of the prophet’s death in halo 2 this made them get careless and scared. They tried to rush their plans without putting much thought into it which ultimately resulted in many defeats. After truth died that marked the official ending of the covenant.
What we’re fighting now is not that same covenant. They are a small remnant faction that decided to break away from the arbiters rule. They are notas organized or has the power that the covenant that came before them had. They are weaker, they do not have the same guidance as the old covenant did with the prophets, they have limited resources and can’t afford to be rash about their decisions.
They should not be portrayed as strong because they’re not. They are nothing more than rebels and scavengers. With the mass production of spartan IVs, the combined forces of the arbiters army and the humans, and what appears in the cinematic to be promethians fighting them jul’s army is in the same position humanity used to be in. The only difference is that I don’t believe they can get out of this situation and pull a win.
To me they honestly just feel like placeholders until we meet our new real enemy which judging by hunt the truth may be ONI.
They can afford to be rash because they now have the combined force of the Prometheans. Plus, they now have Halsey and a piece of the Janus Key, which will help them find more Promethean and Forerunner artifacts. If they are the ones who awakened (or whatever) the guardians, they have now become a threat.

Watch the trailer again closely, they appear to be at war with the promethians. Yes they have halsey but she may either end up dead or a prisoner. The guardians might be trouble but it doesn’t seem like they will have a side.
With no more Prophets The Covenant has broken off in different factions and with different factions comes different armor sets and variants. I wouldn’t be surprised if a new line of Prophets arise because there is an entire race of them and they are manipulators so a similar Covenant similar to the original trilogy could possibly emerge. Without a doubt there are hundreds of ways Halo can turn. We’ll just have to wait and see what 343 does next.

Good point, I just have my doubts that one of those factions will ever be as strong as the first covenant.

Pretty sure your wrong, the same armor can be seen with the Arbiters elites when Fireteam Osiris is with them.

He isn’t entirely wrong, remember the armor style of that one faction in halo 2 “the heretics” ? And now with jul’s army having different armor variants I can say its possible that the other factions if there are any most likely will have new armor variants
It’s true that they’re not the juggernaut that they once were, my issue is that the stakes don’t seem like they’re there anymore, and it’s largely with the way that the Elites are being portrayed as stooges, seeing all these Zealots just react slowly stumbling around and getting ragdolled is just a bummer. Elites have always felt Elite, especially the higher ranking ones, it’s just lame to see them fight more like Brutes than the warriors they have always been portrayed as.
I am hopeful that the Arbiter can maybe do the Sangheili some justice.

But so far that’s speculation and from the trailers they have the same armor so its wrong until they show different armor variants of elite minors.

It’s all about the reclamation process and the forerunner trying t regain the mantle of responsibility before humanity does… well not really
However, that would be why the guardians are showing up
It used to be a renegade faction but now they got a whole new army at their disposal and are more fanatic than ever. You’d think the Arbiter would’ve wiped them out by now.
