The Covenant in Halo 4?

are we going to see old trilogy species again but NOT as enemies? i really like to see elites again specially Thel aka Arbiter and those funny grunts too! what do you think?

I imagine not.

Possibly. Lets wait until Halofest, then, even with only a setting, our Lore keepers can get around to telling us what’s up.

I learned to respect the Elites as enemies early on when I first picked up Halo CE in 2005. With the opening cutscenes of Halo 2 I became instantly intrigued with The Arbiter, and sympathized with his plight as one falsely accused of “heresy” before the Covenant heirarchs.
Even at that point, before completing the campaign, I fancied The Arbiter as an ally. When I got the chance to play as him in H2 I was delighted. When, after a series of gradual revelations, he realized that the prophets were mistaken about Halo and had also set up the Elites for genocide at the hands of the Brutes, it was certain that an alliance with Johnson and UNSC forces would follow.

I freely confess that The Arbiter is my favorite character, not simply in Halo but from all the games I’ve played. The Elites represent true honor and brotherhood. They are a proud and zealous warrior race. But their zeal, as fierce as it is, does not blind them or make them selfish. The Arbiter demonstrated openness of mind throughout Halo 2, reflecting on all he learned along the way…which brought him to realize and accept that the “prophets” of the Covenant were deceived and treacherous.
Unlike the Brutes and the “prophets”, the Elites are not power-hungry opportunists. They will alter their course when they realize that they’ve been wrong, and will seek to be honorable in all their affairs.

We all know how Halo 3 ends. MC and Cortana are adrift in space. And it was assumed by Lord Hood and company that MC was among the fallen. At the ceremony for the dead he related to The Arbiter that “it’s hard to believe he’s dead.” The Arbiter seems surely to know better. Gazing into the stellar beyond his typically august response to Hood was…“Were it so easy.”
And then we see The Arbiter and Half-Jaw headed back to their homeworld.
The game closes with the scene of MC crawling into the cryotube for a much-needed rest, telling Cortana to wake him if she needed him.
There was never a doubt in my mind she’d end up needing him.

Now…I have envisioned MC and Cortana possibly contacting The Arbiter and Half-Jaw for assistance in dealing with whatever they run into upon that ominous-looking orb that we see pulling them inside itself in the Halo 4 trailer.
Or perhaps The Elites will seek out MC and Cortana as a matter of principle, since their alliance was secured, and since they share a common enemy that has threatened the annihilation of all sentient beings.
It would be logical for us to see the Elites again.
But the story could go in quite the variety of directions.

I hope to see the Elites again, and fight at their side. I hope, in fact, that I can once again fight as one of the Elites in Halo 4.

If there are going to be any Elites in Halo 4, there had better be The Arbiter returning. He knows the Chief is alive, and I’m sure he would help if he could.

I want to see Elite allies and enemies.

> If there are going to be any Elites in Halo 4, there had better be The Arbiter returning. He knows the Chief is alive, and I’m sure he would help if he could.

The arbiter didn’t know that Chief was alive, he considered himself extremely lucky to escape from Halo alive.

There should be. Just because the Covenant is broken doesn’t mean the Elites don’t exist anymore. I personally think Arbiter should be in the game, like a subplot where he’s trying to find John.

He definitely believes Chief is alive. Remember the end of Halo 3?

Lord Hood: Hard to believe he’s dead…
Arbiter: Were it so easy.

“Were it so easy” as in, “If only it was easy to believe”.

“Were it so easy…”

With his line right there, I’d say he has a suspicion that Chief isn’t done yet. If Chief could blow up Arby’s giant hula hoop he tried to protect, make it back to Earth to catch Regret and chase him back to another giant hula hoop and kill his -Yoink-, then eventually come back to Earth again surviving re entry as a fireball, then killing all the Covenant could throw at them on Earth, and the Flood, then chase Truth to the -Yoink!- giant hula hoop making device, make a fool of The Flood Daddy and chase Truth down with Arby and help Arby kill Truth…

Arbiter probably thinks Chief can survive a hula hoop maker explosion.

I completely agree with everything you said; however, I really don’t think the Elites will make an appearance in Campaign (remember, there’s Halo 5 and 6 that they can come back in) this time around. But I truly do feel that they should be playable in multiplayer.

I’d imagine that the Arbiter MIGHT make an appearance in Halo 4. Mainly because of what he said during the end. “Were it so easy”. The Elites had grown to respect the human race after the alliance, so maybe the Arbiter will return, possibly with the Shipmaster, to learn the fate of Chief and Cortana. After all, the Spartans had been a troublesome foe during the Elites’ times in the Covenant, so Master Chief would make a very valuable ally for them.

However, if he was to be in Halo 4, I’d like to see him have a role similar to what he had in Halo 2, rather than the mere sidekick role he had in Halo 3. I’d like to see him get his own missions, where he would attempt to find Master Chief.

It’s a flip of the coin to say if the elites will be back this time around. If the covies aren’t in the game halo 4 will definitely have a different vibe than the rest.

The shipmaster? Oh, you mean half-jaw. Yeah, it’d be pretty cool if he made an appearance too. But if the Arbiter made an appearance, would he be wearing the crappy ancient sangheili Arbiter armor? Or would he be wearing a more high-tech Arbiter armor, he could get a makeover just like Chief did in Halo 2 and as it looks in Halo 4.

Edit: By “crappy” I didn’t mean his armor looked bad, to be honest it looked pretty BA, but I mean for practical purposes compared to the more modern Elite armor of that time, the Arbiter’s armor was pretty outdated.

I agree with both of you.
I also hope that with any future appearance of The Elites, and with The Arbiter in particular, that The Arbiter’s role will exceed that of a mere sidekick. He represents the best of the Sangheili tribe. His history with the Covenant was of the utmost sort. He was a fleetmaster and a zealot…no mean positions, those. And he is the UNSC’s intelligence link par excellence, relative to any future entanglements with remaining Covenant hostiles. Then, too, the Elites are intelligent warriors and brilliant battlefield tacticians in general. Their actual experience with The Flood predates humanity’s encounter with the parasite. It thus makes ample sense they will return…though, perhaps, in the 5th or 6th installments, after Halo 4.
The Elites are not minor characters in the Halo saga. They are the equivalent of the Spartans from the Sangheili side. And here is a situation of war on a galactic scale, involving alien races and intelligence, not just war on earth between men and other men, or even just between men and aliens on earth alone.
I can’t imagine their absence from the series at this point.
The humans have no better friends than the Elites now, just as they had no worse enemies in the past.

My only real criticism with Halo 3 was that in single player campaign one did not have the Arbiter to assist on every mission. But when he’s there it’s a blast. Having the other Elites is fun, also.
On Legendary difficulty I learned to make the most of The Arbiter’s capabilities. Basically I’d attempt to control the situation so that he’d have the lead. I’d then make keeping his back a priority while watching my own. Often I’d play using difficulty-enhancing skulls…which meant I’d be short on ammo and decent weapons to deal with boss enemies. It’s amazing how well The Arbiter does if you line him up just right, especially when he gets angry and whips out the Energy Sword. I confess that several times on Legendary especially I’ve had to fall back, keep the Arbiter’s back entirely, and let him take down the bosses or stragglers I couldn’t deal with.
In a word, The Arbiter has saved the day for me numerous times in Halo 3 on Legendary.

I like the look of the Arbiter’s original armor. It has that ancient pedigree and honor attached to it; though I also agree a “active camo” upgrade, when in his shoes, would be nice.

Me too, he really grew and developed as a character in Halo 2, and that was it, really.

I really would like to know what happend to the arbiter and the rest of the elites once they went back to there home world. Does anyone else feel like this as well ?

Honestly? Not really. I’m satisfied knowing that they went back to their homeworld without the Prophet’s lies controlling them. It’s nice to see that kind of force over you lifted in the end. So i’d probably be sort of upset if the Arbiter returned.

Other Elites possibly, but not the Arbiter. I feel his story finished with a satisfying ending.

NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND YOU WHEN YOUR CAPS LOCK KEY IS JAMMED. But on a serious note, I would enjoy seeing the arbiter again.

Please, 343i, the game would be so boring without them! And i have reasons on how and why to keep the covenant:

  1. At the end of halo 3, we took out the main leadership of the covenant. They were scattered in disarray. BUT! We didn’t destroy ALL of the covenant! There are still remnants that are still loyal to the great journey. And their religion was NOT proven wrong in the end. The humans just defeated them. And thats why the covenant, or at least what remains of them, are going to band together and continue to bring down the heretic race that is humanity.

  2. The prophets are a race. Not just a few that you killed. There are many more that at least one of them would try and continue the covenant. Perhaps in addition to the loss of covenant that they suffered, they have a few new races to help them. The perfect excuse to add more new races to the existing ones.

  3. Perhaps this forerunner world has something KEY to what the covenant are after. Perhaps the world has some importance in their religion. You can do whatever to the story.

  4. You dont have to make them the MAIN enemy, but maybe have the forerunners, the covenant, the flood and maybe some rebel humans. It can be done.

  5. The covenant are a big key to multiplayer, how stupid would just human vehicles be? In terms of gameplay, you cant take away anything. You have to add.

Please, once again, 343i. You have to keep the covenant in. Thanks for your time.
