The Control Schemes will make or break Halo 4

Although we may not like it the Default Scheme probably shouldn’t be changed, many Call of Duty fans will come to Halo 4, and giving them a control scheme that’s easier for them to get used to is important for 343 to make money, and in turn be successful, you can’t necessarily blame them for this.

However, making the rest of the control schemes suffer because of this is a terrible idea. Give us something we’re used to, not many ‘so close yet so far’ layouts like Recon.

Recon is a very broken control scheme. Recon has Sprint as X? Why? Now that Sprint is very essential to getting everywhere, it should be priority over Armor Abilities.

So Recon should switch Sprint to LB, Armor Ability to RB, and Reload to X. Or at least make it VERY, VERY, close to this. Like Sprint and AA’s switching places, that’s fine. In Reach, Recon was B to melee, why would it get switched to Right Bumper?

If 343 doesn’t do this, at least make a new Control Scheme called ‘Classic’ and make it at least similar to this:

The Revised Recon (Classic)

LB: Sprint or AA
RB: Armor Ability or Sprint (I’d rather have it LB as Sprint and RB as AA, but 343 seems intent on making LB be AA’s, it’s not preferred, but having them both on the bumpers is good either way)
RT: Shoot
LT: Grenade
A: Jump
X: Reload/Action
B: Melee
Y: Switch Weapons
LS: Move/Crouch
RS: Look/Zoom
D-PAD: Switch Grenades (Whatever)

I’ve been to MANY forums from around the internet (From very polite to the scum of the internet), and people agree that this would be a great alternative to what we have regarding Recon. It would appease most Default and Recon users from Halo Reach.

Bumper Jumper also is apparently very messed up as well, although I don’t have an input on that because I don’t use it. So please post how you think it should be changed.

So please 343, Halo 4 will be a great game, but no matter how great it is, without a proper Halo-like control scheme that everyone is used to, your game will lose quite a bit of it’s followers soon after release.

343, your community isn’t asking for the Moon. Can it really be that hard to slightly tweak two of your control schemes? It’s understandable why you’re not giving us custom layouts, but come on guys, really?

Just so you know, they’ve changed Bumper Jumper

Really?

I heard the original was terrible, X to grenade I think and things like that.

Do you have a link to the new layout?

No I don’t have a link but grenade is no longer on X. The one in the E3 build was a programming fault.

How about:
RT: shoot
LT: throw grenade
RB: melee
LB: armour ability
A: jump
B: crouch
X: reload
Y: swap weapon
Right stick click: zoom in
Left stick click: sprint
D-Pad: left and right to change grenade

I don’t know just yet. I have to play around with the game before I’ll decide which one I’ll roll with.

B for Crouch is what’s very wrong with these new layouts. Crouch jumping will be horrendously bad, and due to Crouch being off to the side, it will have to be Toggled.

So crouching while in a firefight will be pointless because you will be forced to move your thumb off to the side for a second to press it.

What they have for Recon is probably the only passable one, X for sprint isn’t TOO bad. But sadly, it shouldn’t be this way.

But like I said, they should keep the Default one they have, it’ll be more familiar to many people.

I just want the Default Reach controller layout ):

I really hope they have a control layout like this. I mean, how hard can it be to make a simple layout like this? Why would anyone even think that grenades being mapped to the x button would be a good idea…

If 343 will listen to it’s fans and do Custom Button Mapping as well as include their own presets they will be able to appeal to everyone.
But no they are bloody lazy, ignore what fans want and then we’ll have to do what we did to Bioware to get their attention.

TRUE Recon:

LT: Grenades
RT: Shoot
LB: Sprint
RB: Action/Reload
Y: Switch
X: Armor Ability
A: Jump
B: Melee
LS: Move/Crouch
RS: Look/Zoom
Up-Dpad: Switch Grenades

Why do people wanna replace Recon? RB to Reload is what makes Recon what it is dating back to Halo 3. Leave Recon the way it is and just add in another Classic layout.

However, the controls aren’t what is going to make or break H4, it’s the playlist management which was the very thing that tripped up Reach.

Damn right it is!!! It’s so bad to have like 24-ish playlists -___-

Well I saw the interview with Frank O’Conner at Con and he stated that bumper jumper was still the same as H3 and Reach. Since that’s what I play on it made me happy to hear that. But now with sprint being default and the need for an extra button on the layout, I agree the layouts will be very important.

The number of playlists weren’t the problem, it was how long it took to cater to certain playing styles. Infection and Invasion didn’t get proper map support for awhile, MLG and Classic couldn’t function properly until the TU, Arena was a bit of a bust, etc. As long as Halo 4 doesn’t make problems similar to these then it will do just fine. I doubt the control schemes won’t be fixed by launch.

I think 343i should just give us the option to make our own custom control settings, it puts anyone who wants to try something new for their playstyle happy and everyone who is complaining about the current options happy.

It makes sense, instead of creating like 8 options!

(i personally would like the old bumper jumper with lt- grenades lb-jump rt-fire rb- armor ability)
