The control layouts stink

First and foremost, I’m a lefty and use southpaw sticks. As such, many people here may not get the issue. Please don’t be abusive because I prefer an aim scheme that predates the original Halo.

Anyways, these controls are distracting and frustrating. I can not find a suitable scheme by any measure. Everything constantly feels backwards. I understand this isn’t old Halo, but these don’t feel like a good control schemes regardless of what game is being played. At least not as a lefty. The biggest issue is that the sprint button also controls the stabilizers when in the air. I turn auto-stabilization off because it ruins the ability to jump while already scoped, which is a huge portion of how I play the game, which always worked superbly before. But if I do that, I can’t utilize a very necessary tactic with stabilization. I can’t because, much like the issue holding your breath in most CoD games, clicking in the stick and aiming at the same time on the same stick is near impossible. Compound that with this gameplay while in mid air makes it pointless.

None of the control schemes work for me. Default I can’t jump, aim, and stabilize like I mention above. Plus the left bumper to throw grenades never feels natural in this game. In the Halo 4 scheme thrusters on left bumper feels uncomfortable. Plus the stabilizer issue. The other schemes seem all sorts of terribly uncomfortable. I have an adapter and have played around with bouncing button mapping around but ultimately the two biggest issues I found were that:

  1. the sprint also dictating stabilizing means it’s impossible as a lefty
  2. the game has too many active buttons

Ultimately the control schemes in Titanfall, Destiny, and CoD:AW work because all your movement option are built into the current control schemes and actions while in Halo 5 the decision was made to add a button. In the other games, boosts, double jumps, dodges, etc. are extensions of the current buttons already used.

The biggest issues are not being able to fully customize controls for each feature/button and too much chaff. Why isn’t thruster built into sprint like AW? Click the stick while not moving and boost forward. Move Stick forward + left click = sprint. Move Stick in other direction + left click = boost in that direction. It seems unlikely you’ll integrate the features into the rest of the controls and drop a button. But why can’t jump button in mid air control stabilizers as well as clamber? It just seems that there’s no way to find natural controls as a southpaw.

I’d love to see one of these two:
Halo 4ish
LT: Grenade
RT: Fire
LB: Crouch + Ground Pound
RB: Melee
LClick: Sprint
RClick: ADS/Zoom
Y: Switch weapons
X: Action/reload
A: Jump + Stabilize + Clamber
B: Thrusters

Or Halo 5ish
LT: ADS
RT: Fire
LB: Crouch + Ground Pound
RB: Grenade
LClick: Sprint
RClick: Melee
Y: Switch weapons
X: Action/reload
A: Jump + Stabilize + Clamber
B; Thrusters

Currently the controls are just too distracting. Let us assign all the actions to buttons.

Although I don’t have the same problems as you, I would like more customization for button layouts as well.

There is a H4 layout. But most of them are the same from H4 anyway…

just give us complete button-mapping, 343.
to satisfy everyone.
killer instinct, a f2p game, has it and I love it. so please give it to us for halo 5.

bumper jumper works perfectly for me, just as it has in other halos. Though the lack fully customizable controls boggles my mind.

You still play ki? If so add me and we can play!

Honestly, it’s effing 2015, why cant we just customize the controller however we see fit. Other games have done this, and the concept has existed for decades. I am dumbfounded how ‘custom’ is not an industry standard option for controllers.

Completely agree with fully customizable controls. I have been using Fishstick which seems to works really well, but I don’t see why the ground pound has to be linked with the crouch. It would make a lot more sense if it was linked to melee, since that’s basically what it is. The ground pound is very hard to pull off using anything other than default. Overall love the game, but this thing is bugging me.

Thanks to those who have responded. It’s just a shame that something so basic as control layout can get in the way of the user experience. I honestly can’t tell if I love the beta, hate the beta, or what my opinions are because everything is obfuscated by the controls. If their looking for feedback, this is the first thing that needs addressed since it has complete bearing over the rest of the feel of the game.

Right!!

Which controller configuration lets you scope in with the left trigger?

There needs to be complete controller config customization. There is an improvement that will not hurt anyone.

The default lets you ads with left trigger. The sprint button also acts as a hover though and that’s on the left stick. If you’re a southpaw, you have to click in the stick and precisely aim it as well which in truth is about the single hardest thing to do in any shooter.

See my post about custom button mapping to make everyone happy. Show some support there and let 343i know this should be standard operating procedure!

I’m really frustrated by the lack of attention this issue is getting.

Beyond controller settings, some of the input syncing is really not intuitive imo.

For example, ground pound action being synced with squat? Squat??? Really? Why not just in-air + press-and-hold melee? That would seem way more intuitive given the nature of the action i.e. slamming into the ground with your fist.

Another example would be the manual hover being synced with in-air zoom + sprint. imo syncing this action should be placed on squat, and hover should be able to engage from hip or ADS anytime you are in-air + squat.

No argument there. A lot of this is just counter intuitive and barely works but only if playing default with righty controls otherwise its completely broken.

I totally agree with the OP, being a southpaw user my self (I blame Turok 64) we are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to finding a button layout that give us the same smooth flowing movement that a default player would have. I my self use southpaw + Bumper Jumper as it feels right for my playing style, but!!! I am at a disadvantage when it comes to sprinting or boosting as these are mapped to the A and X buttons respectively. The only way to counteract this problem is for 343 to do one of two things A, allow players to configure their own control schemes or B, also map Boost to up on the Dpad and Sprint to down on the Dpad. This would allow me to keep moving and be able to sprint or boost at the same time. One of the reasons I love playing Halo is that the controls were mapped out so perfectly.

What I don’t like is the air stabiliser ability, I used something similar in Destiny with my warlock all it did was make me a huge sitting target for every other player to aim and shoot at, but hey each to their own.
