The complete list to improve player progression and customization in Halo Infinite

The current player progression system and battle pass is not intuitive or rewarding, and current customization options are restrictive. Below is a list detailing how I believe these areas can be improved and still allow 343 to incorporate a lucrative monetization scheme that is sustainable long term.

  • Increase per match xp earned just for playing matches. (Already confirmed to be coming)
  • Institute XP bonuses for good individual and team performances. This is dependent on KDA, special medals earned in match, making plays related to the objective, winning the match etc.
  • Improve the free battle pass : Remove 10 of the 40 challenge swaps in the free battle pass. Replace with (10) 150 credit tokens to be used in the store to purchase customization items of your choice or purchase next seasons battle pass. This rewards free players who invest sufficient time into the game and keeps them coming back long term.
  • Allow players to purchase individual items from store bundles at a premium.
  • Remove restrictions on coatings so that they can be used across all armor cores.
  • Allow chest piece, helmet attachment, utility and wrist attachments to display selected armor coatings via toggle. Currently all the attachments are grey.
  • Move chest emblems to on top of chest attachments so that you can actually see the emblem.
  • Bring back commendations from Halo Reach/Halo 5 to earn additional XP and exclusive rewards (weapon coatings/armor pieces/armor cores/vehicle coatings etc). Another example that did this well was Modern Warfare 2019. It did this fantastically with the Officer Challenges. With Officer Challenges there are 100 difficult challenges to complete per season that rewards additional xp and exclusive rewards/unlockables only obtained through completion.
  • Rework the post match screens to display battle pass progress showing total XP earned from the match and a breakdown of how the XP was earned. Make this feel rewarding and fulfilling for the player. Again, MW 2019 does this well.
  • Make XP boosts count down only in game time.
  • Improve the coatings obtained in the premium battle pass. The level 99 coating is grey. The free armor coating you start with is also grey…
  • Give the Halo 5 SR 152 reward a makeover to make it match the original renders. Right now the paint job is dull grey and the visor color is different. The original render had a shiny gold visor and vibrant silver metallic paint.
  • Allow per piece armor coating customization to increase individualization between players.

FWiW I am having tons of fun playing Infinite and 343 absolutely knocked this game out of the park. Multiplayer feels the best and looks the best in years. I cannot wait to play campaign on Dec 8. Progression/customization is the only area I see that can be improved upon so that we can maintain a healthy player base for the long term.

I agree with a lot of these proposals, except one.
To me, to “Increase per match xp earned just for playing matches” would be a bad solution. That makes everybody simply participate instead of really playing and doing their best…
No sense of rewarding at the end of a game at all.

I would prefer an hybrid system :

  • some points for playing a game (so that the not-so-good or beginners players don’t feel too bad)
  • much more performance xp, based on the kind of game played (and thanks to all the data and infos we see at the end of a game) : more KDA ratio for Assassin, more Attacking and Defending flags for Flags, etc. That way, those who defend the bases or flags feel rewarded as much as those who rushed and attacked and died a lot. That would give a more personalized and rewarding feeling for each new game, and where to improve for example.

But I think something else could also be done :
Maybe changing the ratio of XP would be a good idea too. For the moment, each game we earn 50 to around 250 xp (with the challenges). So it takes around 6 to 7 games to be up a level. Let’s keep this (or even better, need a couple less games to be up a level), and just change the ratio to include performance.
The problem is that it’s too tight a number to really include performance (like 32xp for performance? sheesh…)
Let’s say that, instead of needing 1.000 xp to gain a level in the pass, we would need 10.000 xp.
We would still need 6 or 7 games to be up a level (so around 1500 xp per game), but the xp would be rewarded in a different way. For example, for an Assassin’s game :

  • Simply playing : 500 xp
  • Ratio KDA (let’s say 12/10/5) : 770 xp
  • Medals won : 180 xp
We earn what, 8 medals on average per game? Let’s be rewarded for each one of them, instead of just seeing them and not really caring because they’re useless… Let’s earn 10 xp for each easy medal (double frag), and 15/20/25 xp for the more and more difficult ones. THAT would be rewarding and would give people incentive to play the best way they can, don’t you agree?

Of course, the ratio needs to be worked on, so that it isn’t too slow for beginners. But with all the data already collected, like the average of KDA on Assassin, the number of flags stolen or defended, the number of Zones taken or defended, etc., I believe it could be easy to find the “average game” and earn around 1.500 xp for it. Those who did worse will win something like 1.000 xp, and the best could win 2.000 per game, for example.

I know that would motivate me and reward me a lot more, because how I played would really have an effect.
And of course, that could be presented on a post match screen with some details and a bit of animation, something more vivid and that we would be happy to see at the end of our “mission”.

These are just ideas, but something vivid and rewarding would be great, because the game is great, but its biggest problem is the kinda dull and monotonous feeling of playing (or simply participating) game after game after game, without the feeling that what we did was even taken into account…

Anyway, thank you 343 for this great game, and all the best to you all !
