The Challenge System

To me, the challenge system works fine. You get challenge swaps for free from the battle pass anyway. The challenges are super easy and usually are doable without actually trying to do them. I understand why some people are upset about it, but saying that the challenges are too difficult may be an exaggeration, unless I’ve just been getting lucky with my challenges.

I will have to disagree with you, the challenge system as it stands is poor to say the very least. Back during Halo Reach’s life cycle, challenges was an optional course that players could take to not only progress further but step outside their comfort bubble.

What 343i has done is make the challenges manditory as they are the only means of progression. Reach poccessed a multitude of ways for players to progress, post match, performance, jack pot, and commendations to name a few.

I understand that this is a beta but im certain that this is what 343i has to offer and is using the beta status to not get chewed out for these predatory practaces

I think you’ve gotten lucky. I’m stuck with challenges for weapons that rarely spawn, and challenges for vehicles I rarely see, let alone get a chance to use. One in particular, to take down a wraith is kind of ridiculous. Wraiths don’t spawn that often, and when they do spawn there are 23 other players trying to take them down. And sure, you get swaps, but not many, and there is no guarantee you’ll be given a swap that’s any easier, so swaps as rare as they are now don’t fix this.

Also, with challenges being the only way to progress, and players only being able to use the items they paid for if they progress (battle pass), you’re heavily encouraged to do challenges. But sometimes that’s counterproductive. If you’re playing Capture the Flag but focusing all your time on getting challenges involving getting kills, then you either have to ignore the challenges or ignore the objective. There’s no good solution in that case. And sure, you could argue the player should always focus on the objective, but again, people need to progress to unlock the items they paid for, so they’re going to want to forgo the objective a lot of the time. Which just is counterproductive to what objective games should be about.

Hard disagree. The challenge system needs a lot of work. There are too many challenges that encourage players to do things that are antithetical to whatever match your in (get kills with a weapon often encourages players to play sub-optimally during a match), or they can only be completed in specific game modes/maps, which encourages leaving/afk/throwing the game.

Further, on top of the “play a match” challenge, there should be an additional evergreen challenge that rewards extra EXP for winning a game.

Ultimately, however, challenges as the primary source of XP is actually stupid. Medals and match score should tie into player advancement in some way so that players who just don’t care about challenges can ignore them.

The main problem with every single one of these sort of challenges is that you need to go through a checklist of many factors before you can ATTEMPT at completing it.

For example : Kill an enemy with Turrets of the Wasp.
This is your checklist :

  1. Wasp must spawn instead of Banshee
  2. You must get onto the Wasp
  3. You must not die in the Wasp or the Wasp gets blown up
  4. You must then kill someone with the Turret.

And if any of steps 1 through 3 get messed up, you have to fish for another attempt again.

You think that -Yoink!-’s fun? Exact same process with the Sniper challenge.

  1. The match must spawn Sniper.
  2. You must gain possession of the Sniper.
  3. You must wait for a vehicle that is moving by and then snipe a passanger.
  4. GENERAL FACTOR : don’t die

Challenge Swaps?
This means 343 intentionally made these challenges frustrating in order to force players to use Challenge Swaps. This is actually nonsensical to the maximum.

Only problem with Challenge Swaps being free rewards: you have to actually complete challenges to get said Challenge Swaps, completely defeating the purpose lmao

I’ve seen only 2 wraiths since the beta launched.
How are we supposed to complete “destroy x vehicle” if it’s not guaranteed to appear on the match, let alone how do we destroy it.

I had “Destroy an Enemy Ghost” before the update and another one after the update. Only with the Skewer i had a chance to destroy one because with this “new innovative destruction warning” the opponent gets out of the vehicle, the ghost explodes but it doesn’t count.

Hoping they or put more vehicles, don’t randomised weapons or just say “Eliminate an opponent that is ON x vehicle”

You’ve been getting lucky.

I have to get 25 kills with a gungoose but didn’t see one in over an hour of BTB last night.

Ok then. I have most definitely just been getting lucky.

Indeed. I had a challenge for getting 3 Slayer kills, but I got 5 Stockpile games in a row and a handful of Total Control and CTF games before I even got a single Slayer match.

I also had a kill 3 Banshee challenge, which are rare spawns, I have to fight 11 other teammates for the kill, AND make sure to kill the Banshee in a way that doesn’t allow the player flying it to jump out because of the explosion warning. You can best believe I used a Challenge Swap on that one.

Here’s some fun challenges I’ve gotten:

-Destroy a enemy vehicle with the chopper’s wheels. First off, let me just say that the chopper doesn’t work the same way it did in H3. You can’t just boost into a vehicle to get the kill. You kind of have to get yourself “stuck” on the vehicle and then rev up the wheels, and even then it’s not instant. You have to keep yourself glued to the vehicle for a solid 2 seconds for it to do damage. So basically I have to get a map that has a chopper, and then hope that one spawns, and then hope I somehow get it, and then somehow pull off this ridiculous maneuver…without dying.

-Destroy an enemy air vehicle with a air vehicle. In all the time I’ve played so far I haven’t even seen two air vehicles up at the same time. It’s only one and even then they don’t happen that often, and when they do they get shot down easily by combined gunfire. Sure, it’s not “impossible” but I don’t see it happening.

-Kill a energy sword user as they’re lunging toward you. So in other words get a bulltrue. This one is my favorite. Not only do you need to get a map where energy swords appear and have it spawn instead of the gravity hammer, but then you also have to purposely let the enemy get it, let them get close to you, and then somehow time it perfectly. You have to purposely do bad and then get lucky. That’s absolutely ridiculous. It would be fine in a Living Dead gametype but that no longer exists. Just like when H5 first launched!

So to return to your original post, no, the challenge system is not ok. It’s absurdly situational. The fact that we’re expected to do not just one of these, but multiple of these on a weekly basis…well, I don’t have the words for it.
