The Challenge System was not made by gamers

If you spend your time playing a lot of games, you often find yourself making sure to prioritize the limited time things- such as weekly rewards and stuff- before you move onto other things you actually wanna do.

I don’t think the idea of challenges are bad, it’s a good way to give direction or have the player try something new, but when you give the player a task, say, playing a match of strongholds, and don’t give the player a stronghold playlist, you’re going to get most of the people quitting every match they join because it’s not the one they wanted.

You’ll have a lot of people with drool on their chin telling you, “Oh just play the game for fun,” and while that’s a fine idea, everyone plays the game their own way.

I enjoy collecting stuff in game, that’s where I get my joy. However, the system you have set up just wastes my time and encourages me to quit games before they start, hoping to find what I need next match.

I’m fairly certain no dev in 343 thought this was a good idea, I think they thought of a good base, but someone higher up didn’t let them fully implement it correctly, I dunno, maybe they wanted to frustrate people enough to buy challenge swaps. Yanno, create the problem and sell the solution, typical modern gaming tactics.

The fact that we’re at season 2 and this is still an issue surprises me.

TL:DR

Remove gamemode specific challenges if you don’t have a playlist just for that game mode, ya quack.

MCC has an example of good challanges.

EDIT:

So I tried to say screw it, “I just wanna have a good ol time shootin people, I’ll queue into quick play and have a good ol fashion match.”

I get that, and not only do I get someone who quits when we start losing, I also have a guy trying to get challenges, hiding the whole match for a chance of killing the enemy flag carrier, he wants to get his flag kill, and the best chance for him to get it is to let the enemy get the flag first.

I know that if I really want to try hard, I should play ranked, but good luck finding a match on PC, much less in my country.

343 made a good game but this parasite of a challenge system is killing it, the fact that they know it’s bad and still haven’t fixed to shows some outside force is stopping them from making an actually good game.

I love Halo but I can’t take this anymore, I need some space away from the game. Who knows, maybe years later I’ll get back with it like an abusive ex, thinking they’ve changed.

EDIT 2: Salty folks flagging my post as inappropriate, grow up.

I see a lot of games struggle with trying to find a good balance with this. Trying to make an incentive to push people outside their comfort zone and try new things, but without the player feeling forced to do so.

I’m fully on board with being pushed out of my comfort zone, I just wish it wasn’t a matter of RNG lol

Right now I have a challenge to get a lot of melee kills in LSS, and I think it’s stupid to have to play unoptimally so I can go out of my way for melee kills, but I’m more or less fine with it compared to the stronghold example.

I know what you mean, I swear a lot of these challenges were thought up just to entice players to use challenge swaps.

Don’t worry. They’re “listening to feedback.” But nothing ever changes.

The problem is time.

A lot of these issues would be solved if the weekly item wasn’t timed.

Win a strongholds match? That’s bound to happen eventually. Get Sniper kills. Yeah, it might take me a while, but I can do it. But when you only have a week to do these things it makes you feel like you have to do them NOW. For all you know you may never see another strongholds game that week.

Lets not forget that it also undermines the ability to play games with your friends. If all of you are attempting to get the weekly reward, more than likely you’ll stop playing with each other because its inefficient to do otherwise.

Ive been shouting it into the void for months on this forum:

This challenge system needs to be upended

The challenge system was made by corporate suits that want players to spend money.

343 do not care about making a fun game for fans, it’s always about and always has been since 343 took over. Obviously Bungie wanted money too, but it was as clear as day that they cared about the product they were making. You’re blind if you can’t see how thirsty 343 is for money.

That’s because they aren’t trying to sell you $2 challenge swaps in the MCC. As long as they are trying to monetize the progression in Infinite, it will be purposefully designed to be frustrating and awful. Which is exactly what the current system is.

or! better idea… keep thsoe challenges to encourage people play those modes. BUT introduce an better que system that doesn’t rely on RNG, so that people can get the objective modes they want, then it’s all done and over with

This. This is why changes are so slow. They’ve intentionally created a problem so they can sell you the solution.

TBH all you’d have to do is remove the weekly challenge and just have the game constantly ensure you have like 5 challenges. This shouldn’t be hard and wouldn’t cause any major re-writes of anything or ‘just copy pasting code’ fans often say but is actually easier said than done. This wouldn’t be perfect but it’d instantly be less FOMO and user friendly. Its not like the weekly rewards are even that great anyway.

Ope it was made by a company that wants players to buy more swaps

Ive been on about this from day one. Zero progression aside from the lame “battlepass” which was 75% junk and challenge swaps. Is it any wonder that most of us looked at that and said “yeah, no thanks”.

It was CLEARLY made to get suckers to throw money at it. It worked to some degree i suppose but the sheep need a bit more to chew on than what they are currently being offered. You folks DO realize that by supporting this crap it just gives them all the more reason to deliver even less next time…

Ive pretty much lost all hope for this one. Its highly doubtful the experience will get any more enjoyable at this point.

I hope the new CoD comes out swinging this year and buries this trash. Maybe it’ll motivate the folks at Xbox to give Halo the treatment it deserves. It was royalty at one point. Remember those days?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Instead of removing game mode challenges they need to add an edit option in the gameplay list. Make it so when you go into quickplay you can uncheck all games and just recheck the two game modes you want to play. It might take longer to find a game but this way you do not have to play 6 game modes you do not want only to get the game you need on the 7th try. I had a challenge last season kill a spartan while defending a zone (3 times) thinking simple go to quickplay and 5 games not one stronghold I finally got it on my 6th game, and it only gave me two out of 3 needed so I had to play though other games again just for one more spartan kill. Edit option solves a lot of game drain.

Even if they make it where you must have at least 2 modes marked at least I know Stronghold will come up more frequent now.

sounds like the REQ Pack issue all over again, only with the way to level up instead of unlocking something, “its the only way to do it and its hell”
