The challenge system needs a major overhaul

The challenges just aren’t fun and they force players to play in a way that are just counter productive to the game. Which ends up ruining the fun for everyone who might be on their team.

A couple ways I think would help fix this is.

  1. Get rid of special weapon related kills. This would be fine if the weapon spawned on every map and game mode, but it doesn’t so when it doesn’t people quit the match or if it does they spend the whole map waiting for that weapon instead of playing the game. Also if you’re going to have weapon related challenges then make sure they actually work.

  2. Get rid of game mode specific challenges until we have the option to pick what game mode we want. Again goes back to promoting quitters.

  3. All challenges should be able to be worked on at the same time. The fact we are limited to just 3 at a time and the 4th being behind a paywall is just stupid. Look at MCC and the pretty much perfect system they have.

  4. If you’re going to have weekly items then they need to actually be good. Because right now they aren’t worth working towards.

  5. I think the weekly reward should be a bi weekly reward and it should be a community reward that everyone works together to unlock. Every two weeks have it be a helmet or shoulder pieces or a chest piece. Make it so we have to get a certain amount of kills or play a certain amount of games and as long as you logged in and played a match in those two weeks you’ll unlock it.

  6. Challenges should unlock store credit along with XP. Doesn’t have to be a lot, but just enough to make the challenges worth doing.

Right now once you complete the Battle Pass there’s no incentive to even do the challenges especially the annoying ones. The rewards are just awful. The game has been out for weeks and the best item we’ve had is a skin for the sniper. No one wants a toaster background for our Nameplate and no one wants to grind for stickers that’s just a duplicate of the nameplate we got a little bit ago.

If they gave access to all of the challenges at once I’d be finished, with nothing else to do, after an hour.

The rest are all fine if these challenges are daily. They’re weekly so yes you can certainly play 2 games of oddball within the next week. The little crappy emblems can wait a few days; everyone is in a rush to have nothing to do in this game.

Store credit is a big must have. Every game allows you to unlock its own currency but Halo.

Exactly this. Very surprised there’s no way at all of earning credits except for spending $$.

Reminds me of Destiny and their Silver currency - I never got any of that for free either I think.

I’ve already finished the battle pass and this week’s ultimate reward so won’t be logging on until next Tue 6pm for the daily weekly challenge reset (except for the daily game for the current event).

Knocking out these challenges takes me several hours across a few days. If I just had to log on once to get the reward I’d hardly play at all. Would probably harm the population I think.

I know the game should be enticing enough without dangling the carrot of a weekly reward behind 21 challenges, but for me that’s what’s keeping me playing right now.

Certainly agree armor pieces would be nice though!

Edit: reread your post and see you suggest a certain number of kills or games to be played. I can get behind that idea.

On the flip side, the sooner I don’t have to worry about progression, the sooner I can actually play to have fun.

Exactly that. Not too mention there are challenges like win Oddball or CTF and if you could progress through everything at once it would be more of an incentive for people to stay in matches because even though they didn’t get CTF they could still progress killing a certain amount of Spartans or one of the other ones.

As is the challenges require you to spend an insane amount of time hoping you get a certain game mode which makes it more likely you’ll have quitters on your team. It wouldn’t be fixed, but just allowing people to work on all 21 challenges at just like the MCC would cut down a lot of these people quitting while looking for a certain game mode and would make it so people can get back to just playing and enjoying the game faster and not worrying about challenges.

Good point. Some do post that it’s the challenges that keep them playing though. I’m probably like you in that playing and winning is its own reward.

Yeah. Daily challenges are basically participation trophies. I mean, I get winning games, but do they have to decrease XP for just doing the same challenge over and over again? It’s not exactly rewarding.

I’m mixed on the challenge system, even after getting the full battle pass on my Xbox Series X. I feel like more effort is put into the weekly challenges, but you don’t even get any permanent challenges added to your account, like the commendations in past games, for example. This worries me, as you’re forced to do everything all at once to level up faster, double XP or no double XP. And this isn’t the fault of 343 going free-to-play, as Splitgate has a variety of challenges from dailies to weeklies to seasonal, so I would’ve expected Infinite to follow a similar path. For example, I keep getting tired of swapping challenges that I feel are either impossible or are not the challenges I want to do when there is nothing to replace them. I understand 343 is experimenting and I can’t speak for anyone a whole lot, as someone who doesn’t hate the progression system that much. Hell, with a few tweaks, I can see it working very well. But, I guess 343 hasn’t gotten to that point yet.

I guess I’m the opposite. I’d rather the challenges actually live up to their name and actually be a challange. The ultimate challenge should be hard enough that it isn’t just a freebie. On that same note though, the unlock should actually be something cool that people actually want. Willow Tea shader was a good start. Make it challenging, make it something worth showing off that not everyone has. If you aren’t good enough to get it, too bad.

Maybe have a feature where let’s say for the month of December, once you finish your weeklies, you can work on all the ultimates you missed throughout the year.

Maybe there’s a better way of doing it all together. Maybe the better option would be to model it off of CoD Ghosts customization unlock system where the challenges are always there, they are hard, but when you finish each one you get a cosmetic to wear and show off.
