Okay, this may come off as a rant, so if you don’t like reading long posts, sorry, I just really felt like I need to put this somewhere before I lose my mind. Hopefully I can find some people who agree with me and some of the people in this community can prove me wrong. And just a note: like anyone else’s opinion, my opinion is subjective. Nobody is right or wrong for liking or disliking a game.
There are a good portion of people who don’t like halo 5. I can definitely see the gripes that they have. Halo 5 missed in many places, and combine that with all the changes from the original halo games, makes a lot of people dislike halo 5. But what really frustrates me, pisses me off, and just leaves me so disappointed with this community, is just exactly how much shade the community throws at halo 5, and 343 in general. I literally see the the most negative, pointless posts on streams and youtube videos all the time (not from everybody, but a lot of people). Comments such as “-Yoink!- halo 5” or “I hope halo 6 fails” or “I just wish bungee was back, 343 hates halo” litter halo media everywhere. What is so annoying about this is that these people ONLY FOCUS ON THE NEGATIVE THINGS. These comments aren’t constructive, are pessimistic, and do not help further halo in any way. YES, I do believe that we, as a community, should speak up about the things we don’t like about halo, becuase at the end of the day, we (halo fans) are the ones who are going to be playing this game. But why be so pessimistic and whiny about the way we do it? Has anyone ever heard of constructive criticism? People forget that bungie went to make DESTINY. Destiny, the game that costs 170 dollars if you bought the dlc’s as they came out. The game that literally had its story gutted and thinned out to absolutely nothing simply to drag it out to make more money. In my opinion, Destiny is way worse off than halo 5 and always has been. And before someone says “well all those things are Activisions fault, not bungies!” Well then I guess req packs and everything wrong with halo 5 is Microsofts fault and not 343’s? No, it doesn’t work that way. They are both at fault, so in the case with bungie and activision, bungie is just as much at fault for the major problems with destiny as activision is.
Halo 5 has its problems, yes. But halo 5 DOES have many good things about it too. On top of this, bungies halos were not perfect. I suggest you check out Act Man’s “what I like about halo 5” and “what i dislike about bungies halos” videos on YouTube. And no, I’m NOT cherry picking videos, as act man himself has shown many times how he does not like halo 5 and prefers the older halo games much more. These videos just show that even someone who dislikes halo 5 strongly can still be optimistic about halo 5 and not cry about how “halo is dead”.
Here are what I like and dislike about halo 5:
Likes:
- By far, the gameplay. I know some people don’t like the new spartan abilities, but I do (except the spartan charge, very annoying). I have read 5 of the halo books, and since I’ve played halo since halo 2, I know a lot about the lore of halo. The new spartan mechanics make me feel like I am actually playing a spartan. And even from a simple gameplay perspective, I love how fast pace it is. I love the ability to clamber, sprint, thrust, ground pound, and hover. I can understand how the older, slower paced halo is appealing to older players (and I also like the older paced feel as well) because they like the more methodical, calculated approach that halo 1-3 had. Trust me, I understand. I just like both.
- Forge. The best forge by far. Most customization, most ease of use.
- Infection was the best in halo 5. I had a blast playing it.
- War zone. Especially war zone fire fight. When I want to play something chill but more fun, the selection of cool and unique weapons in war zone always satisfies me.
- The competitiveness and resurgence of esports halo. The fact that halo is more competitive than ever let’s you see how good you are versus other players and gives you that satisfaction of victory when you win. Also, makes for good professional matches such as the HCS.
- The little things, such as the unique assassinations, ability to change warthog seats while in it, the forge custom game lobby, automatic weapons actually being useful in multiplayer, etc.
Dislikes: - The story over all. We all know and have heard the criticisms, no need to beat a dead horse.
- The req system. Reach was one of the only halo games I didn’t play that much (I was in the military at the time) but the little that I did play it and what I heard about it shows how great it’s armor system was. Earned armor will ALWAYS be better than RNG gear in my opinion.
- Unfinished game at launch. The game had like 5 game modes at launch, pretty pathetic. No BTB or forge either. Hope this never happens again.
- Lack of split screen. This doesn’t bother me as much as other people since I haven’t played splits screen for any halo or shooter game since halo 2. But I will list it here since I believe it should have been in the game.
- The art style. Again, while this didn’t bother me as much as some people, the more people tended to bring this up, the more I tended to notice this. I liked halo 2’s art style the best.
The whole point of this post is to show people that while halo 5 does have its problems, it also does things right. You can voice your opinions about something WITHOUT completely over looking all the positives. Spewing random hate at halo and 343 without giving them any props isn’t going to solve anything. Even if someone completely hated halo 5, they can state their criticisms without sounding like a child. Hell, the best way to voice opinions to companies are with money. Like Simms (halo broadcaster) has said, all halo fans are apart of this brotherhood together. I will always try and support halo with what I have, and i feel like when this community isn’t so pessimistic, it is the best community in the world. I think halo is the best game in the world. We should want halo to flourish, and if you do not like the way halo is going even after voicing your opinion, just move on to something else, without kicking and screaming like a child on the way out.
