You know, I would’ve loved to be in on that discussion at 343i.
(343i Multiplayer creative lead) “we need to get rid of forced team colors so that players can show off their armor coatings we’re going to practically force them to pay fo- I mean, ahem to aid in player expression. What do we got?”
(Corporate Lap Dog #2) “Why don’t we give all the players outlines, so you can tell who’s an enemy and who’s not?”
(Corporate Lap Dog#3) "Yeah! Lot’s of games are doing that now. Counterstrike, Rainbow 6 Siege. And let’s make them extremely bright, SO BRIGHT, in fact, that they make it impossible to see ANY armor details, colors, or other distinguishing characteristics!
(343i multiplayer creative lead) “BRILLIANT! We’ll re-create the exact problem we were trying to fix, while removing player expression AND monetizing the entire process! We’ll make millions!”
(the one guy with common sense) “I mean, hear me out, but maybe that’s why we have a friend or foe indicator built into the reticle so that it changes colors? And also, we could TOTALLY just put player’s emblems/names above friendlies’ heads like in previous titles? Just thinking critically here”
(343i multiplayer creative lead) “well, SMARTASS, first off that’s not allowed here, and second, how would you be able to tell if someone’s an enemy if only the friendlies have names over the heads?”
(common sense man) “They wouldn’t have names over their heads.”
(343i multiplayer creative lead) “you’re fired.”
