The beta's great and well done; why is it not fun?

I’ve been playing the beta a ton and, well… I think it’s very good and extremely well thought out, but I realized-I’m not having fun. It seems too-I suppose hard, or serious, I can’t describe it. In all the past games I’ve been a mediocre player and have a 0.9kd and fluctuate between negative and positive, where here I’m balancing around 2.5 so far, and yet it just seems too much in terms of difficulty. My favorite game ever is dark souls, infamous for it’s difficulty and challenge, and I’ve never had more fun in a game, so I don’t understand why this is happening. When I sit down for halo, I wanna have fun, shoot some things, get wacky moments, and some unpredictable impressive gameplay occasionally, but it just feels like a game made for people that only care about doing better than others, and the K/D emphasis and deranking if you do bad enforces this stale, unfun, alpha male champion attitude. There should be a limit on how much you can deteriorate maybe, so that people won’t get so pissed all the time. The only gameplay style this seems to support is nonstop buttclench hostility. If I want to get into a game and try to use the new stuff, why am I penalized if I don’t instantly get two kills per life with it? Seems a bit severe. Also basing rank progress on team behavior: are you trying to endorse teamwork or ruin friendships? Move over smash bros, we got a new mlg pro noncasual circle jerk cheesefest over here.
In summary, gameplay wise; I am fulfilled and expectations breached, but the feelings I get from it are making me wish I had gotten the WiiU rather than the xbone so I can actually have fun while playing a video game. Video GAME. Why do we have to be good? When you play a board game with your mom and beat her do you degrade her and say her performance was lacking and that she should manage her game better and vary her gameplay style? No, because that’s -Yoinking!- douchey, and I come away from this game feeling never emotionally satisfied. When I come away from a game with 20 consecutive prophet’s bane kills and two deaths and told my performance was average, that’s not cool. That’s not constructive. That’s not going to help me in any way other than bumming me out.
If a multiplayer designer at 343 is reading this, please remember, this is a game. It’s about fun. You’ve succeeded everywhere but fun for me.

The beta is focused on Arena style gameplay. Hopefully the fun game modes will come in the full game.

  • Big Team Battle playlist (big maps and vehicles)- Infection playlist- Action Sack playlist (with many unique and fun game modes)- Grifball playlist- Race- Rumble pit playlist (with more unique game modes, not only Slayer)And many more I don’t remember right now.

And we will always have Forge so the community can make more awesome Game Modes that 343i can put in Matchmaking.

That’s really reassuring if it is true, I’m just really worried by the direction they seem to want to go towards with this. Wasn’t there some game journalist that did some advertisement thing with halo 4, bonus xp, and mountain dew and doritos that was some laughable atrocity? It just seems like they can’t reach a middle ground between beginners and people who seen’ good but play for fun like myself and the most hardcore tournament heads. I’d find it really funny if this game was taken to EVO and esports events like 343 so desperately wants and no one was around to enjoy the game anymore because only the top 1% could find it entertaining. With H2A I’ve done more customs than matchmaking, and I do not want that to happen again. I like it too much to just feel satisfied with one over the other, I really want them to hit the mark on both.

And sometimes challenge is fun.

Ofcourse, that’s why I mentioned dark souls, because challenge is fun, hard is not. Hard is cheap, where challenging is difficult. One requires good play, attention, and is fair: I do not think that this is what the beta has provided. It’s difficulty has felt empty while dark souls is a more rewarding and fun experience, especially because the game doesn’t say “poor job fellow, should have rolled out of the way”, no, you recover and if you can, congratulations, you’d righted your wrong. Here it judges you, and puts ranking and unlocks behind this practically random and unfair wall. Let me grow three more sets of arms that are indefinately long so I can reach into the consoles of other teammates and play the game for them so I can actually get a result based on myself, not others.
