The Best Bits of Halo 4

Hey

I’ve noticed the majority of threads within this forum usually {but not always} contain negative feedback, often with demands for this, that & the other to be tweaked/nerfed/buffed & on rare occasion, include a nice dose of ‘keyboard rage’.

Why don’t we make of a list of stuff that kicks -Yoink!-?

Let’s give praise for the things 343i absolutely nailed in Halo 4, as a long time veteran of the Halo battlefields I was concerned about a new studio filling Bungie’s boots but think 343i have done an awesome job overall with their first endeavour and the next instalment can’t get here soon enough!

If i had to pick just one thing, for me personally the weapon audio effects throughout the entire game sound so solid and ‘beefy’ {particularly the crack of the sniper rifle} - across the board better than any other I’ve experienced by a long shot.

Feel free to chime in below with your favourite feature/moment/thing/whatever.

They made forerunner weapons, something the community has asked for since the intro of the sentinel beam. Now, I know most of them seem like re-skins, and some just handle badly(looking at you BS), but I love the LR, and I love what 343 did in the art design. Graphics are amazing.

Weapon sounds I agree are stonking.
Total eye candy graphically - requiem is just awesome - all of it.
Sucessfully introduced new enemies to refresh the franchise(which I think will be expanded upon and improved in later installments)
Nice new gametype - Ricochet.
Gave the RT boys something new to talk about in Fails OTW.

@Noble138 I couldn’t agree more, the whole ‘visual flavour’ of Halo 4 is beautiful, I even ordered ‘The Art of Halo 4’ Book from amazon, some of the concept artwork is truly amazing.

@MudMonkeyMagic It is the most pretty looking Halo to date, best on the 360 IMHO. Do you reckon they will expand this race of enemies as was the case with Halo 2 & 3 with Buggers, Brutes etc…

 • Extraction is a great objective gametype
 • The Global Championship was amazing
 • 343 Reacts to community complaints
 • Haven, Skyline and (IMO) Exile are excellent maps
 • The game and playlists are updated on a weekly basis

Although I don’t think Halo 4 is the best Halo game, it is still a good game in general.

-Beautiful and amazing Campaign, in my opinion one of the bests

-Cortana’s appearance :stuck_out_tongue:

-wonderful graphics

-Ricochet and Extraction

-the rifles after the weapon update

-the Mantis

Can I get an Amen on the guess rifle?

Its my favourite of the Halo series (with reach and CE being second and third) I like the customization, the look of the game, how it plays (though i feel the melee is too strong) and the story. people dislike this game just like they disliked every halo game when each one came out.

Beautiful looking game. It has been stated before, but I’ll say it again: coming out of that cave and looking at the structures on Requiem gives me goosebumps.

Really great human campaign. Just wish it was longer.

The BR. I don’t care how much cooler it sounded or looked before, this one is awesome.

Ricochet is awesome.

The announcer doesn’t sound like Drake (which is to say, he got up 5 minutes before he recorded his lines). The urgency is notable.

Broadsword on Midnight. Playing the Finish The Fight during that part adds to the already spectacular portion.

Lastly, the Prometheans. Sure, I threw my controller a couple of times on Legendary, punched their leftover data purge and screamed at fleeing Watchers. But I screamed like a little girl or groaned everytime I saw them. I felt threatened. Prometheans were really fun to defeat and I love the feeling of victory after beating 4 Battlewagons.

Campaign, I liked the story, human.

I really like the lightrifle, I like the Spartan feel. Its the best one so far I think.

> @MudMonkeyMagic It is the most pretty looking Halo to date, best on the 360 IMHO. Do you reckon they will expand this race of enemies as was the case with Halo 2 & 3 with Buggers, Brutes etc…

I think that the Didact is not dead. The Storm will be composed or given forerunner combat skins. Thus the ‘covenant’ will fade as enemies and the Promethians expand. I think we are in for Human:Forerunner war, round 2.

Better fall timer.

In Halo 2/3, you die from some of the shortest fall descents imaginable… before your feet even touch the ground. Bungie used the removal of fall damage to justify the reduction in surviving long fall distances. Very unfortunate. It was worse in Halo 3 since you couldn’t reset the timer (Halo 1/2 had dozens of ways to do this). Swinging the hammer before landing barely helped.

In Reach/4, you can jump from extremely high up and survive. In Reach, there was even an achievement for it (If They Came To Hear Me Beg), although it was buggy.

Faster melee.

In Halo 3/Reach, your melee is very slow, so slow that it can hardly delay the respawn of Co-op partners and it turns cqc fight into a game of chess.

In Halo 4, your melee is very fast, you can infinitely delay the respawn of Co-op partners and cqc fights can be very fast paced.

Responsive Spartan.

Starting with Halo 3, there was a decline in player speed, strafe was minimally effective. Although Halo 4 has continued that trend, it’s noticeably better. 343i just need to reduce the autoaim/magnetism/projectile speed of guns and increase the movement acceleration.

The Ghost.

In Halo 2/3, the Ghost was very poor in turning while boosting, and in Halo 3, it was lacking the traction seen in Halo 2. The AI pilots were noticeably reckless, and overpowering.

In Halo 4, the Ghost is a lot more maneuverable, can scale cliffs again, and the AI pilots have noticeably improved (albeit still overpowered).

-The campaign is easily the best so far. It builds on the characters and has a fantastic story line. The graphics were incredible and look similar, if not better to the graphics of an xbox one game.

-Spartan Ops for me was surprisingly enjoyable. Sure the missions got slightly repetitive but I enjoyed it on a whole. Unlike Firefight in Halo Reach, I played Spartan Ops because I enjoyed it and not because there was a daily challenge worth 4000 credits.

-The weapon sandbox is brilliant. There are plenty of new fun weapons that each have their own niche and uses. The Sticky Det and Railgun are easily some of the most fun weapons from any Halo game. Just a shame they didn’t include Reach’s Grenade Launcher + other weapons / grenades from halo 2 and 3 (e.g smg).

-Some of the maps play extremely well and look beautiful. Unfortunately most of these maps are DLC :(. Haven, Skyline, Monolith, Landfall, Perdition, Pitfall, Exile, Meltdown are all some of my favorites and each play very differently. Then we have some solid forge maps and remakes that also play really well such as Simplex, Onyx and Shutout. Halo reach lacked good maps (Countdown and Zealot were about it par forge maps).

-Ricochet and Extraction are extremely fun and fresh. They both play extremely well and provide hours of fun. Extraction is brilliant for competitive gameplay.

-The hit detection is the best yet.

-The start to the last mission O.O

It’s kinda awesome to read through these replies and reflect on things properly without taking them for granted.

@Swift806 mentioned the Mantis, an excellent addition to the Halo vehicle roster {a vehicle that can -Yoink!- a fallen enemy has gotta be good, right?) }, and you’re right, Cortana is one FOXY LAYDEE in Halo 4.

@PulmonaryHeart4 I agree with spartan-ops too, firefight for me was a repetitive grind i enjoyed the story as a complement to the campaign, i think the Sticky Det is a better replacement for Reachs 'nade launcher, but that’s just my personal preference i guess.

@ZeroS0nic “Beautiful looking game. It has been stated before, but I’ll say it again: coming out of that cave and looking at the structures on Requiem gives me goosebumps.” - I couldn’t agree more, it really captured the magic that players felt when landing on the first Halo back in the Combat Evolved days.

I burst into laughters when I unintentionally explored that you can tea-bag with the Mantis. The only thing that topped that was the tea-bagging hologram glitch.

Who knows how long I stood there and just looked at the floating structures and the beautiful scenery when I played Requiem for the first time.
I still have to stop there for a few seconds when I play through that level.

I keep seeing these threads lately. Perhaps we need one official ‘Halo 4 positivity thread’ for people to give a list of all the things which they love about Halo 4.

> I keep seeing these threads lately. Perhaps we need one official ‘Halo 4 positivity thread’ for people to give a list of all the things which they love about Halo 4.

I reckon it should be this thread, I’m not biased or anything… at all… nope… not even a lil’ bit :stuck_out_tongue:

this isn’t just for what 343 did, but for every halo.

i love how chaotic a game can get, like playing lockdown in halo 4 or BTB on fairly small maps.

as for 343, i love the beauty of the game and i love the balanced weapons, vehicles, and armor abilities. there isn’t really anything over-powered or under-powered. especially in the right hands.

Well, I’ll get to it.

Campaign: An amazing campaign. It was very cinematic and suspenseful. It also felt more grounded, and had much more relate-able characters or at least characters we could understand. I loved the Didact as an enemy, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of him. In the past, the main enemies were the fragile and physically weak prophets versus the bulky chief. In this game we saw a villain that could physically go toe-to-toe with the chief. (Although I thought they didn’t explore this enough, it left it open for future games).

Soundtrack: Normally the music doesn’t really affect me too much, but something about the song, “Arrival,” blaring through that last mission made it worth noting. I thought they did a really good job in this department.

Spartan Ops: At first, I was fairly bummed that they got rid of firefight, but the more I thought of it, the better it seemed. Firefight got old, simply put. Yeah, it was amazing at first, but after a while trying for the onyx commendations it turned into more of a chore for credits. Although the first half of the spartan ops season felt a little too distant and pointless when compared to the actual campaign, they managed to fix that mistake with the second half and create a truly great experience (I just wish they played arrival on the last mission again).

The Spartans: A lot of people hate on their appearance in this game and use Reach as a standard for what a good spartan looks like, but I feel completely different, especially since I use the Halo 2/3 spartans as my standard. To me, the reach spartans felt like hardly anything more than just over-glorified ODSTS. I didn’t feel like a super-soldier, just A soldier. These spartan IV’s, like the Spartan II’s of Halo 1-3, look like an enhanced super-soldier wearing special armor. Sure some of the spartan IV variants look wacky, but with such a large selection at our grasps, there’s a lot of really good ones too.

The BR: need I say more?

The carbine: need I say more?

The beam rifle: need I say more?

Forunner Weapons: Speaks for itself, needed to happen. I really like the light rifle and binary rifle, they’re a lot of fun to use and seem really balanced, yet unique. Others like the suppressor and boltshot could still use some work, but they were good ideas (just executed poorly).

Forunner Enemies: I thought they looked really awesome. I thought he execution on the forunner enemies was very well done. I always wondered what they would do, and I’m really glad with the choices they made in this department.

Infected Spartans are Flood: Through the mess that was Halo 4’s excuse for custom games, one thing came out on the good side. When a spartan is infected, they look like a flood character. Maybe not like what we’re used to seeing in the previous installments, but still flood. They took some liberties to make them look more monstrous, and really wicked.

There’s probably others that I just can’t think of at this moment, but this is my list of what 343 did right… which is quite a bit when I look over it. Do I think there’s work to be done? yes, but I’m sure they’re learning. 343 is still a new company, and Halo 4 was their first release. Doesn’t mean it’s ok with everything they’ve done wrong, but it makes it somewhat understandable. They’ve done good enough with Halo 4 that I would’ve gotten a basic copy of Halo 5 and stuck to the series if it was coming out on 360. The problem is really the Xbox 1 for me. halo 4 may have been good enough to get me to buy a basic copy of Halo 5 if it was coming out on the 360, but it definitely wasn’t enough to get me to buy the Xbox 1, which even isn’t entirely Halo 4’s fault.
