Found this on The Halo Council. Its a video of good, simple, well done tests to determine the best automatic weapon in halo 4 at close range, then at medium range. Figured I’d post it here since I havnt seen it on these forums yet.
Good testing
Hey! That’s my video!
Thanks for posting it! And it was on Halo Council too? Now i feel special xD
I appreciate you posting it
This video just makes me like Reach a lot more since the automatics are viable at long range too and aren’t as random.
It’s also sad that since they took out bloom there’s no testing for burst fire.
good vid thanks
Great testing and the music made the video so much better.
So now it just comes down to working with preferences and the strengths/weakness of an automatic to determine your favorite. I’ll have to with the Storm Rifle
Ultimately, the test just showed off the viability of the close range weapons, working at close range/medium rage. Did i just say viable and close range weapons in the same sentence? Holy blam, i just did.
Heres a link to it on halo council

Long distance testing is quite literally impossible
Only noobs, or should I say “casual players”, would start with an automatic weapon so I really don’t even see the point in testing them in the first place.

Urgh… Dude, seriously?
Yes I am serious. DMR is the best option, or at least the Light Rifle for large maps.

Meh I can top any person of equal skill that uses a DMR with my AR or Storm Rifle on a 4v4 map that’s for damn sure. The close range weapons can do more than just pull their weight.
Suppressor is the answer to everything… Unless you have a SAW.

They were about 1000x less viable in Reach because the DMR had a much faster kill time, while also having a huge range advantage.
And Bloom wasn’t removed for autos, which is why there wasn’t a long range test, bloom makes things to random.
Well if you ever meet this one in matchmaking, GWEAVA, you’ll get Stormed.

You are about to get Neo Kaiser’d Acid. Just sayin
You can’t convince the guy that the automatics in Reach (except the Needler) were complete crap. Everyone has tried and failed. He really does believe that burst firing ARs is better and more skillful than using any other weapon (especially the DMR).
It’s hilarious tbh.
Wow, that turned out exactly as I thought it would. Not a dig at the testing it was well done, it just reinforced my general experiences with them.
AR is the most versatile with the lowest DPS, the Suppressor has the highest DPS with the least versatility, and the storm rifle finds a middle ground.

This test doesn’t bring any other weapons into the test, so it gets a free pass? We’re talking the weapons in relation to each other, not the whole sandbox. Then all weapons will be pointless unless you have a rocket launcher.
and really, if these weapons are made “redundant” because of 1 weapon, that’s a sign of OPness.
Bloom isn’t as random as you like to think it is. Especially at long range. I’m pretty sure I can out-AR you in Reach at long range if you just hold down the trigger while I pace my shots.

AR’s should not do anything long range…If you start with an Automatic in this game your pretty bad anyways, Precision dominates on all levels

In Halo 4, the automatic weapon kill times at close range beat the kill times of the medium ranged weapons. (With a nice middle in between close and medium range). They are balanced. In Reach, the were completely out classed and underpowered compared to the DMR/NR, not only because of their bad range, but because the DMR/NR simply had faster kill times. So how were they more viable in Reach at long range…?
And yes, bloom is completely random. That’s why you win by pulse firing it, reducing the bloom. Bloom is also negated by the hilarious amount of bullet magnetism the Reach AR has.
