The best and worst of social modes...

So what’s a good (and bad) experience you had in a custom social mode on halo 5?

(by social mode I don’t mean the social playlist, I mean the game types in customs were your not meant to kill anyone but everyone does anyway)

Basically every custom game on a forge map with 16 or so players. The round will start but you’re still in the loading screen, so your character just sits there while everyone moves around you, and you can’t do anything until 30 seconds after the round starts, which is extremely dangerous in infection modes.

I blame the Timmy helmet for making me go through that…

One good experience I have had is a peaceful campfire map where 16 players sat around a campfire and told stories.

A bad one (and also a common one) is just joining the game only to have the spawn area nuked by someone that has a chain gun that shoots rockets.

Most any clan-themed map is a total joke, one way or another. Seems mostly to be based around K/D padding for their custom games record as far as I can tell, cause theres been people who use that invincibility Forge glitch to just wade through and it sucks.

The best though…I joined a server called “Church of the Spartan.” I thought “cool maybe its some kind of awesome astetic map.”
It was better than that. I joined in and there were a bunch of people milling around in this one room, and an overlooking balcony held in with glass with two people in it. No one had any ammo in their guns and it looked like melee didnt do anything, so we just stood around. And the guy in the bubble up there sent a message saying “go to game chat”, and everyone did surprisingly (this was just after Forge came out so the game was fairly new and not everyone was jaded and tired like they seem to be now).
And the guy…literally gave us a sermon. About Master Chief. He freaking read sections out of Fall of Reach and First Strike like they were holy text. And he had us all chanting “amen” whenever the Chief did something epic in the book.

“And the One Spartan threw the heretical xeno into the escape pod and sent him on his way, and the ship was his. Amen.”
“AMEN.”

And then at the end of it he said “and now, let us pray to the Chief…”
And alllll these doors on the side of the room opened up and there were magnums and assault rifles and it just turned into a hailstorm of bullets. It was GREAT.

Wow. Just wow. This guy has WAAAAAAAAY too much time on his hands. I wish I was there to see that :stuck_out_tongue:

Kind of reminds me of this podcast my mom listens to. The hosts of the podcast look at the Harry Potter novel series and teach about abstract things like ‘love’ and ‘friendship’ through the story of Harry Potter, like the series was the book of Proverbs or something. It’s crazy there are some people that love the series so much, they would go around preaching its ‘holy’ text.

I guess I only have a bad one since I haven’t played any custom games with people.

I talked to the guy after it, he was taking the pee out of everyone. He’s just a lore fan and he wanted to see what he could do with the new forge. He doesn’t actually BELIEVE any of it.

I could guess that, it just reminded me of a similar, if more sincere, experience I had.

I wish I could be as much of a lore fan as him, but alas, I haven’t read any of the books. I was hoping Mythos would be a sufficient ‘cliffs notes,’ but then I hear about this Spartan Jai, and there’s the other books that come after, and I realize Mythos just isn’t enough…

Halopedia, my man. Halopedia is all you will ever need, and its free.
Thats where I went when I realized I had missed a few books.

My worst experiences with Socials?
Well…

  • Trying to defend yourself when someone tries to attack you and you get killed for defending. - Having a bunch of Sangheili/ONI/UNSC/Covies/Brutes KOS you for no reason. - Dealing with a godmode host and his/her goons with mythic weapons - Squeaker hosts.

BAD

  1. BTB freezing or trying to find a player after one quits.
  2. Matching Onyx and Champ players in infection.
  3. Squeakers in every match I basically have to always be on mute everyone.

GOOD

  1. Noobs in rotational playlists I like to troll.
  2. Wrecking people in Fiesta.
  3. Quickplay’s a great place to warm up.

Same, whenever someone quits I try to wait it out. But if another one quits I just restart my game and repeat the whole process

Good:
Getting revenge after being killed for picking up a gun.
Bad:
Teammates kill you for no reason.
