Ok, we all saw this coming, ever since the release of that inside infinite back in like July of 2020 about Jega R’domnai, everyone has been smitten with his design. Which is precisely what I will discuss today.
Jokes aside, Jega R’domnai may be the best decision 343 has ever made in terms of character design. Artistically speaking Jega is a beauty of color merging, steel-gray/black with red accents will always work. But from a story aspect and a gameplay aspect Jega R’domnai has more to give than any character 343i has created. The Warden Eternal was an interesting design, but too complex for the small child or perhaps too overwhelming and mechanical for the bandwagon fan or a newcomer to the series.
But Jega marks a return to roots in the Halo series, it marks the return of the days where Sangheili were our feared combatants and were demons on Legendary mode. I recently completed a LASO run of Halo 4 and 5 and discovered that Covenant sections were a lot more ‘organic’ (Pun Intended) and a lot more fun to play than the somewhat forced Promethean sections filled with those -Yoink!- crawlers and the near-invincible knights.
Jega’s design is a throwback to the “Thirty seconds of fun” classic Halo game design, he’s pleasing to look at and his design makes sense and so does his inclusion. He’s a simple being, but a deadly one. He is not immortal and doesn’t have an infinite amount of bodies at the ready. Nor is he a throw-away character added in to make missions more difficult.
His very inclusion has Halo fans frothing at the mouth with possibilities of the Silent Shadow and such. And that is what a good character is meant to do isn’t it? To create excitement and ideas.
And that my friends, is the beauty of Jega R’domnai.
As always I’d love to hear your thoughts.
