why does the smg do more damage at a longer range then the assault rifle
Even though the assault rifle does less damage, it is much more accurate than the smg. Therefore, more bullets should hit its target at long range with the assault rifle, dealing more damage.

Well, the AR is a starting loadout weapon. If it were stronger than the SMG in every way possible, the SMG would be a worthless weapon. The SMG is just a strong CQB weapon, it’s bullets can travel far, but not with good accuracy. The AR can travel far, is accurate, and has a good balance of damage.
They are perfectly balanced in my opinion. I still can’t decide whether one is better than the other.
I prefer to grab an SMG but I like the more close combat fighting and for that the burst of an SMG is much higher compared to an AR.
smg melts people up close but is more erratic, and seems to kick more bc of the higher rate of fire. Assault rifle is controllable and has decent range
Let me break it down for you…
The Assault Rifle is best between close to medium range. In Warzone it can become very viable at medium to long range range with the proper version but don’t expect to nab a lot of kills just because of a scope.
The SMG is best at close range. It can be used somewhat effectively at medium range but only if you aim well at someone in the open. Not a typical scenario but it is possible.
The difference doesn’t seem that great but the SMG is a close range powerhouse especially if you aim to control its bullet hose behavior. Its mag capacity and rate of fire trump the Assault Rifle. Coupling it with Active Camo is a recipe for win.
However! It is typical for SMG users to be outgunned by an aimed Assault Rifle user if they are not careful. That bullet hose I mentioned doesn’t do much good if you keep missing. All in all I think they are great weapons. The SMG is niche enough to be a viable map pickup without necessarily invalidating a starter Assault Rifle.
People have argued since Halo 2 as to whether it was a pointless weapon and the debate continues.

True and it has more bullets fired per second, so it gets more hits in faster
SMG is great for close quarters. It has a higher rate of fire, I wouldn’t say it does more damage than the AR. I know this doesn’t have anything to do with the initial question but the AR with the SMG as a secondary is my favorite loadout.
I’ll take my SMG in warzone but I’ll keep my assault rifle in slayer.
