The Art of Rush

Rushing is the new norm in Halo Wars 2, a so called strategy/tactics game. This is a thread for all thoughts regarding Rushing.

Rushing is when a player puts aside economy for units in order it build quickly and overwhelm the enemy before they can build a defence.

In HW2 this is very very easy, and is the standard way to win, requiring no real skill, other than to spam the enemy with infantry.

In HW1, a rush was still possible with warthogs or hornets/banshies. However it was possible to defend this rush, with effective counter units such as wolverines or even tanks (in a limited number). After this you could attack the enemy as you would have a higher level army and an economy to back it, and you should win. Because of this Rushes weren’t really a thing.

in HW2 however, rushes spoil the entire game, making the matches short and boring. The counter units are not powerful enough, and things like Locusts are to fast and powerful, especially when compared with those in HW1.

With the ranking system in HW2, giving points for wins and losses instead of in match performance (like in HW1), you encourage rushes.

This has to change, the power of the units, and the rewards at the end of the matches. The game is not a strategy game any more.

Put your thoughts on rushing in this thread.

Seriously?

Do you enjoy wasting 5 minutes in a short and uneventful, very repetitive match then?

Constant pressure is what makes RTS games interesting to watch and fun to play. There currently is only one broken rush in this game which will be addressed in the upcoming DLC.

I have a feeling someone is about to learn the difference between a rush and a Timed attack lol

Why should I waste 30 minutes when I can beat you in 5? Just sounds like you’re bad.

The key is to build a small force with turrets to fend off the rusher and expand quickly so they don’t have total map control on you. I would say techers have a higher chance of winning if the rusher is fended off.

I would say it like that, rushing is not really hard in Halo Wars 2, looking to other games HW2 is not the best for rush… It`s too simple

Because 5 minutes is always the same thing, whereas a 30 minute game will always be different, and more enjoyable.

Buddy, if you want your 30 minute games you have to make the game take that long by fending off the rush. We are not going to wait until it’s ok with you for us to attack you, if you’re not ready you will lose, we will not waste our time. You want your 30 minute games? Build some turrets and units and fend off the rush. And maybe learn that it is a Timed attack, not a rush, while you our at it.

If it’s always the same, you should know what to expect and how to defend against it.

Sounds like you don’t understand the competitiveness that RTS’s tend to bring. People ‘play to win’ because winning is also enjoyable,

I’ve figured it to be like this. As much as I don’t like rushing, it’s almost the only way to win against people who you have no idea how they’re gonna play. The problem they have in this game, is they basically endorse it with how you gain experience to level up. In HW1 you got points based on performance and it maxed out at 4000. In this new iteration of the game, you get 800 exp flat, no matter how you win. So that being the case, you’d get people that want to level up fast, they rush. And they perfect it. In the old game, the rush was slower, more methodical. When they made it so you get the same exp no matter what, people took that and said, let’s win quick and fly through levels. I hate rushing but I wanna level up. I’ve noticed when I play some level 50 guys, they just want to have fun at that point. Back in the old days(which sounds terrible) was my buddies and I would turtle, with cobras, vampires, engineers, jackals, and maybe a scarab with the prophet. And we would play til we got max points (4000) then we would slowly take over. Games would last hours, and that was fun for us.
Mans then rushing is fun for other people. Winning also cures a lot of problems.

This is exactly what I was meaning in my post!

I totally understood what you’re getting at. It’s annoying to me, but it’s the way to win now. When I’m with my friends we all decide to rush or not rush based on levels of our opponents and characters they choose. But it’s not fun for me as much as it is others.

even the ai’s rush because it’s mathematically more probable to win with a rush than without.

You were talking about rushing and then you mentioned Locusts, how are Locusts related to rushing? I got lost there…

He is confusing timed attacks with rushes, like most people

I think we should ask OP when it is ok to attack him/her. Because anything before would be a “rush”

Rushes have to be in the game, this game would be terrible if you were not able to put pressure on your opponent from the start.

What does need to happen is to put the rusher behind if the rush fails. Currently you gain too many resources allowing a rusher to build an economy while rushing. I would like to see base built units have more of a power requirement. Enough that you can spam them out but leave you behind if you fail the rush.

Also, having rush units that are effective against all other tech 1 units and have no direct counter is bad (cough Jack Rabbits).

You shouldn’t try to discourage rushes but there has to be risks all any kind of strategy. An effective rush might not win you the game outright but it can push the enemy back if you take out their units and also a building or 2. This can allow you to take map control while they are rebuilding. If you see someone trying to turtle or push for tech 2 units, why let them have the advantage???

Also, when you hit tech 2 it is no longer considered a rush. Attacking around the 4 min mark is a rush, so if you scout enemy before that (which you should always be doing) you can see what they are going for.

Hopefully we will see some improvements in the next patch.
