The armor coating system seems nonsensical and poorly applied in some cases

Apart from the appeal to buying them from the store being absolutely zero since most of them are bound to a single armor core, I’ve been trying to decipher how the color wheel corresponds to the components it affects from both a potential technical level as what the game is utilizing it for. Needless to say, the whole display system is bogus and must be a manually generated thing as a style guide and the components are manually assigned materials. I am under the impression the game might have an interesting custom system to handle it’s materials and I am interested in how it works(PBR trick I’m unaware of?) but I personally feel like the team has done a poor job at assigning them in a lot of cases and it needs a rework.

In particular, the chest, arm and leg attachments for the Mk5 and Mk7 cores make ZERO sense. They are always a default gray and clash with everything color wise and make me not want to customize my spartan color to anything apart from a default color pallet with gray. Also you have the noble5 coating (Jorge’s colors) which specifically affects the color of that on the vauntlock chest (Jorge’s chest piece, formerly “grenadier”) on the MK 5 core but nothing else. There are plenty of large grey chest attachments like it that could use it. Again the assignment makes no sense. For example: the fire and ice bundle’s red and gold armor coating with the vauntlock or the jackplate on the Mk7 look absolutely ridiculous with a big, standard-grey, matte plate in the middle of a mess of shiny gold, red and the dark black under suit.

General thing I could summarize it as, if the attachments at least utilized one of the colors in the useless color wheel for the coating, it would actually look decent but as it is, it is not. Also it could look as is, which kind of works, with the base coatings since most of those have that gray option. Though I personally think the vauntlock in particular needs to have the main collar match the main chest color like it did in reach and have the side bit be one of the additional detail colors (that was weird in Reach that it was always the same color imo) or have them flipped or even have a third color. I think this goes beyond my subjective opinion of aesthetics and although I suck at color theory, this is a clear violation of it in terms of maintaining themes. Not to be a total jerk to somebody I don’t know, but honestly, it’s like someone signed off on these coatings without comparing them to these armor permutations. What were they thinking???
