It seems that the majority of us are NOT happy with the ranking system 343i has in HALO 5, these are my reasons why I dislike it and stopped playing competitive Arena (now I am basically a casual, sadly):
Low ranking people (Bronze, Silver, Gold) matching up against high ranking people (Platinum, Diamond, ONYX, CHAMPION) - How you did last season affects the current season secretly (which is why some unranked people, or many, match up against Platinum+ people) - Seems there is no balance between personal stats (your K/D, flag caps, stronghold defense) and team stats (wins, total K/D) - Expanded, Balanced, and Focused search preferences DO NOT work for THE MAJORITY of the population (thankfully I’m in the minority)Cmon, why match Gold against Onyx!? I mean, yes they could be smurf accounts (another concern is why do some people make smurf accounts just to clobber the Gold and below people, just not cool), but the majority are still trying to climb the ranks. And why secretly carry old stats over to the new season? The new season is supposed to be a FRESH WIPED CLEAN START!
My basic way of fixing this issue (though I wonder why 343i has not done anything to fix the issue with their broken ranking):
Make same area ranked people match same area ranked people, Gold v Gold, Unranked v Unranked, Onyx v Onyx. It does not have to get specific, like Gold 3 v Gold 3, so that if you beat higher Gold players you will rank up. And if you loose to lower Gold ranking people your rank will go down (though, the only case when it’ll revert back to the broken way it is now is if you’re playing in a fireteam of mixed ranks) - Wipe out any stats from last season so it will not affect the current season (don’t match Unranked with Onyx because that’s the rank they got last season) - Make the search preferences WORK like they’re supposed toYes, I know this change will affect the solo players and same area ranked fireteams. But unfortunately there is no real way to fix the broken ranking system for fireteams of mixed ranks as of now.
I agree totally I’m a gold 3 in slayer trying to climb the ranks and it’s hard because I’m playing diamonds.If I can beat golds easily then I should be in platinum.So yeah the whole system is -Yoink-.

Same, I’ve stopped playing my beloved Slayer because as I near Platinum the game decides it wants to match me against Onyx or Champion instead of other Gold 6s…

I agree with you on this except for the unranked vs unranked. While you may see people unranked that doesn’t mean they completely wiped their ranking, it may no show up in the client but an unranked onyx from previous season will most likely be paired with other onyxes. I ranked most seasons onyx and have played solo all 10 placement games and lost almost all my games, I still got onyx or high diamond.

I highly doubt an onyx or champion would be in a match with gold unless they both are in a fireteam and if it does, it’s usually a very rare case.

The only problem with completely wiping everyone’s stats each month is that then you will surely get a slew of matches where Champs match bronze and silver players during the placements. While I do think that rank resets should be real resets, I also think that resetting all active players every month is more of a penalty than anything. This is especially true when the purpose of the monthly ranking appears to just be a scheduled bump down a tier to encourage more game play to work back to where you were before.

And here’s another thing I don’t get. You play solo and lose almost all the games and still rank onyx I win 7 out of 10 games averaging roughly 10- 15 kills depending on the game and accuracy around 40% and rank in high silver or low gold playing against platinum and some diamonds?Yeah the whole thing is -Yoink-.
I agree, the rankings are broken, especially how rank is determined each season. The first couple seasons I didn’t play much team arena, but I was diamond. Well when I switched over to make team arena my main playlist I got to Onyx my first full season. So, I was like okay, I should be good for at least diamond as an initial rank the next season. Nope, got platinum 1 and my kda was above 8 and I was doing all the objectives. I raged a little, but tough through it to get Onyx again. Next season rolls around, won 6 out of 10 starting games, kda above 7.7 and I was so happy that I got… Platinum 3. Really 343!!! I’m back in Onyx again after grinding back up to it. So, 3 straight seasons in Onyx with a kda over 7. I almost guarantee I’ll be platinum again next season even if I win all 10 games to start the season.
The rank system itself is bad and I don’t know why I see Diamonds as a mid-Gold rank solo queuing, but it would be at least tolerable if it wasn’t overrun with smurfs. I’m not talking about that guy who got 19 and 6 on a match, since that guy could have just been lucky that one match. I’m talking about the ones with a K/D at 4 or above when they try. The best way to solve that is to flag accounts with wild inconsistancies in their performance since those guys are almost certainly smurfing. How can you call your game competitive when your ranking system is broken?
Lets step out of the 343i halo system and the real world and lets enter this ideal world:
Points to take:
a. Everybody is “competitively” trying to outrank people in their same division
e.g. I am gold iv and im playing with gold I - VI players in my team against same setup on the
enemy team
b. No one is matched with different division
e.g. gold people matched with gold people
We see here its perfect and it is “competitively” working
Now lets step back again and lets see whats wrong with the real world:
a. server is making now a matchmaking retrieving from the poll of players:

Let: Bronze I - VI : 200 csr points Silver I - VI : 500 csr points Gold I - VI : 700 csr points Platinum I - VI: 800 csr points Diamond I - VI:1000 csr points Onyx : 1500 csr points Champion: 2000 csr points
What the server does is make 2 teams to comprise of almost the same or near
csr points combine including the latency of the players:
BLUE team
Gold I---------->700
Diamond II---->1000
Onyx----------->1500
Platinum IV---->800 Total csr points: 4000 csr points
RED team
Diamond II----->1000
Diamond VI---->1000
Onyx ----------->1500
Silver IV-------->500 Total csr points: 4000 csr points
On the eyes of the server both team are “competitively” equal <------------ this is where the problem is coming from the current matchmaking
And to add when a complete fireteam of 4 people with different ranks lets take RED team,
find a match make it really messed up the matchmaking since that silver I may not perform
well but Onyx has a large gap in skill against gold I, platinum IV and diamond II but the
server thinks it is fine due to the csr points combined of the team are equal or near equal give or take.
Your idea is really great but it doesn’t work in the real world(current halo 5 world) because the population cannot support it, it will only work if the population is high like in DoTA 2 and LoL.
When I played Slayer I was put in a match with a platinum, gold and Onix class and scoring better than the onix class but got put in gold tier #broken ranking

Okay. I’ll bite.
Game 1 - Full of Golds/Silvers. Your team lost and you went 12-23.
Game 2 - Golds/Silvers. Your team won and you went 15-18.
Game 3 - Again, Golds/Silvers. Your team lost and you went 12-16.
Game 4 - More Golds/Silvers. Your team lost and you went 5-15.
Game 5 - Golds and Silvers again. Your team won and you went 12-11.
Game 6 - Once again, more Golds and Silvers. Your team won and you went 10-9.
Game 7 - Golds, Silvers, and finally a Platinum! He was on your team. Your team won and you went 13-12.
Game 8 - Golds on the other team and your team had Plat, you, Bronze, and Silver. Your team lost and you went 6-18.
Game 9 - Golds across the board. Your team won and you went 6-12.
Game 10 - Golds and a Plat (on your team no less). Your team won and you went 6-15.
Not a single Onyx anywhere to be found and no one higher than a Platinum. Gold 2 appears to be the right placement for you after looking at all this.
