The Arena ranking system needs reevaluation

Before anyone writes this off as “oh look it’s another noob just complaining to complain” that is not what this is. This is a legitimate criticism that i hope is seriously taken into account. I’m not sure if other threads have been made about this issue as i have not really done that much digging, but mostly I just see “X weapon is OP plz nerf” threads. I believe the current system that 343 has implemented for this game is not inherently bad, but it grossly over estimates the skill of most players. Personally I have a 1.6 KD and a 6.9 KDA in the Arena so I am no pro player or anything, but I am far from terrible. I have put a LOT of time into the game since it’s launch (I’m almost SR 39), but I have pretty much lost interest in trying to climb the ranks in the Arena because of this issue. I currently have two playlists in Diamond, and a 3rd in Onyx. I am mostly a solo player because of how late at night I usually play if you can’t tell by the time on this post. I will go on streaks of games where the games are somewhat close and i feel like the matchmaking is working just fine, but inevitably without fail I will lose most, if not all, of that progress from getting these matches with teammates who have been placed too highly. I’m talking teammates who will bomb with 1-16 scores. Sometimes it will be the bottom two players on my team with these types of scores. Now I know most people will say they are just having a bad game, but this issue happens WAY too often to simply be people having really bad games. If it were once every 20-30 matches I would agree, but at it’s worst this situation will happen every other game or multiple games in a row. That is far too often to simply be considered fluke games in my opinion.

This really starts to demoralize you after awhile. I understand that I could mostly mitigate this situation by playing in a full team of four people, but with how late i’m often playing most if not all of my friends are in bed. I understand as a solo player it will always be harder to climb divisions, but it should not be THIS hard. In addition to the current system over estimating the ability of players I also feel this issue is compacted by the fact you can’t drop divisions. As I understand it once you hit a rank you can no longer drop below the lowest tier in that rank (in this case Diamond 1). While i understand and see the merits to that I feel it does more harm than good. It can’t be anymore fun for those people constantly getting stomped by people they shouldn’t be playing against than it is for me to have them as teammates. If 343 were to allow you to actually drop divisions I feel like this problem would mostly get resolved over time as they would eventually fall in where they actually belong. On a side note does anyone else feel like they are too restrictive with their map/gametype pool. For example why is Truth (a remake of midship/heretic) CTF only in the team arena playlist when it could easily be a slayer map as well like the past?

This was a well thought out (and written) argument. I agree with you on this. I’m only an SR 26 and I have a 0.87 KD in arena. I’m by no means a good player but I’m no scrub. I simply always get ranked with players that are higher skilled than me. I’m ranked platinum in Swat and team arena yet I’m always losing because I’m paired against players that are “better” or higher skilled than me and my team. The irony is that even with my horrid KD I’m still usually top of the leaderboard on my team.

Yeah I imagine this issue is fairly wide spread, but I personally have not seen any threads about it so I made one. It just feels really really bad when I’m doing everything I can to win, and then I look at the score board and see someone 0-12 on my team. I’ve literally had games where I’ll score 20-26 kills myself, but still lose because the bottom of my team is extremely negative.

I have the same problem, My friends and I will group together go in, about 3 games in we are completely demorilised and have left to go ont warzone because we seem to be paired with people that just destroy us. When the system works we have very close and intense games and we love it, but its been too frequent with the other situation.

I’m honestly surprised I didn’t see more threads about it when I did a little searching. It was mostly weapon complaints.

A lot of the problems you’ve mentioned have to do with the lag masking and some players and teams absorbing way too many bullets. I’m guessing it has to do with high ping players being able to register hits with a 600 ms ping. Also the gathering of damage results in one shot kills because of the accumulation of damage high pong players connect with. Their connections are almost 1 second behind yours and that’s how the servers deal with it. It’s a problem a lot of fps suffer from because the developers no longer allow bad ping players to play at a disadvantage like they should be.

you should be able to drop divisons. too many people are over-ranked imo. and if you could drop divisions a lot of people would have dropped by now. I have a freind who is in diamond and should probably be in silver/gold. poor guy gets crushed every game and is not enjoying halo because of it.

I don’t think that is the issue at all. It happens, but people dropping -15 scores consistently when i’m doing just fine is definitely a skill disparity. They are in a division they do not belong in, and the ranking system is to blame for that. Mostly because you can’t drop divisions.

I totaly agree with you and sometimes playing against bad players is not enjoying because theres no challenges. :frowning:

I agree with everything being said I feel the same way as to when I keep coming top of my team but still loose due to teammates unable to keep up so frustrating when you still loose points for other people’s performance I think you should be rewarded if you are top 3 within your team weather you win or loose

I’m not sure if you should get rewarded rank wise. A loss is a loss, but if you have a teammate that went -15 or worse multiple people (which has happened quite a few times) then I think the game should at least count it as a wash for the top player. No rank gained, but no rank lost either.

I suppose makes sense I see your point 343 do need to look at this issue soon

I agree with OP.

I can’t believe they didn’t bring MCC’s ranking system into H5.

The number ranks were far more accurate. The problem with the current ranking system is it only allows 10 games to figure out your “skill” level…
It’s the method that’s the problem.
