The AR just has way too good of an effective range for what it is, it’s damage is really consistent and it has too strong of a place in the sandbox to be a starting weapon, because of how strong and flexible it is it degrades so many firefights to spay and pray scenarios, while I agree it shouldn’t be 100 percent necessary you should have strong incentive to pick up a precision rifle over the AR but every time I find myself doing I end up getting punished just because of how similar the power is and with how much of a consistent stream of damage the AR is with a low margin for error
I agree that BR starts in this game are actually more balanced than AR, pistol starts.
I haven’t played much but when I have pistol and AR picking something like the bulldog up or mangler doesn’t make much sense at all but if you only have a BR that changes things.
Given the br is dethroned and is the slowest ttk it just makes the most sense as the starting weapon. It makes the AR and pistol actually worth picking up as well as many other parts to the sandbox.
“… you should have strong incentive to pick up a precision rifle over the AR”
Why!?
The Assault Rifle is the definitive weapon of John 117 the Master Chief… If “… spay and pray scenarios” is the issue, then what about the Covenant Needler?
Yeah, for a precision standpoint there already are better options, and for a spray and pray I do personally feel the needler is better. There is no reason the AR needs to be bad.
It’s about time the Assault Rifles more powerful than the BR.
learn how to use the sidekick properly and ul see it is far superior to the AR , it melts enemies far faster, I actually use the AR as a backup if i need to finish off an enemy after an initial engagment with the sidekick
I disagree. I feel like the AR is too weak.
The AR, is finally for the first time in a Halo game not either over turned or under tuned at launch. It is this games “utility weapon” and is serviceable in every circumstance but does not overly excel at anything. If the AR is nerfed then it will very quickly veer into the “useless” category and then the limited precision weapon spawns on maps will immediately become oppressive.
And there absolutely is strong incentive to pick up a precision weapon - they are all more deadly in their defined role of long range than the AR.
“BR has to beat everything in every scenario or game not balanced”
-Yoink!-. Your childhood is over, and your mommy will never do your laundry again.
For me I think the AR is just about perfect. I hated the AR in most previous halo titles, simply because they were completely ineffective. In this game the AR is a more reliable weapon for close range than the BR, which in my opinion is good. It has its own position in the sandbox. Plus, the commando and BR will beat it in almost every scenario for a really good player with a reliable aim, which is also right, the game should reward skill. Using precision weapons up close should be difficult, and I think the game has done that.
Just an opinion, appreciate people view it differently. But if I put it this way, I will always pick up the BR or commando and use it over the AR in nearly every situation. The AR is a good weapon, but it will almost always lose to a skilled player with a precision weapon unless they get caught off guard
Nice try, but wrong
A utility weapon isn’t a skillless bullethose with random headshots. Not only has 343 botched the entire sandbox design but making the AR as powerful as it is only encourages players to run in a line at the enemy holding RT. The AR in H3 was perfect in it’s role as a starting weapon or a companion to the BR.
The Assault Rifle feels just about right to me…
I agree with you OP. I think the overuse of the AR in this game makes it boring to be honest. I enjoy using precision weapons more and I think it leads to better overall gameplay because it doesn’t create constant “whoever shoots first wins” scenarios. To many people camp and ambush with the AR because once you get first shot, you win as it doesn’t really take any skill. I don’t plan on playing any Infinite until they bring in BR starts for social. Otherwise, I’m sticking to MCC.
This simply isnt true except at a very specific ranges.
The AR loses at closer ranges to the following:
Sidekick
Energy Sword
Gravity Hammer
Needler
Bulldog (this gun does need a buff)
Heatwave
Mangler
The AR loses at longer ranges to the following:
BR
Commando
Stalker Rifle
Sniper
I didn’t even count the strongest power weapons like the rocket, cindershot, or skewer because they beat everything nor did i mention getting double meleed.
The AR barely outranges the top category then it has to compete with the second. The BR, especially in past titles, was so much more overpowered of a starting weapon and really let you ignore many of the map weapons as the BR was just flat out better and its long range lets you easily outrange that whole first category with easy. Not to mention the BR is able to kill many more Spartans per mag than the AR is.
The AR in Infinte is with out a doubt the most balanced and least oppressive starting weapon we have had in a Halo that at the same time isn’t absolute trash like all previous ARs.
Nah, AR is right where it needs to be.
Just play 1 game of Big Team and you’ll notice the BR is still the best weapon in the game.
Commando starts for all then!
I wouldn’t say the AR is to powerful, but I would say that the AR shouldn’t be able to snipe / kill someone from across any map ; Big or small.
The fact that you can be “Sniped “ by the AR while trying to snipe with the sniper rifle is pretty damn ridiculous.
Try taking that BR into arena and watch yourself get melted by a braindead bullethose in no time. Even if you perfect them you will still end up with almost no shields.
Sidekick: wins due to not needing to rely on RNG to win.
Sword: power weapon
Hammer: power weapon
Needler: about half and half only due to the needler being forced into an SMG role
Bulldog has range
Heatwave is gimmick gun that requires good aim whereas the AR shreds just as fast with no aim.
Mangler only wins due to 1 shot beatdown
Beats the BR because you can just run away with the AR and wait for him to come closer.
All other “range” weapons fall into this category.
Tell me you don’t understand Halo without telling me you don’t understand Halo, the AR isn’t meant to kill people easily and it never was. Why would you give a player the best gun in the game that requires no skill. Saying the BR is overpowered is just telling me you’re bad at the game and got rocked by players who know how to lead their shots with the CE mag and H3 BR while you just ran in a straight line holding RT.
COD player detected, whines when the braindead bullethose doesn’t win in most arena fights. The only game the AR has actually been weak in is Reach, and even then you can just remove the DMR and Needle rifle and the AR becomes strong due the lack of aim required to pressure someone.
