Anyone can enter. Few will win. Some people will probably give up. Are you up for the challenge?
The Rules
-
$3,000 STRUCTURE budget on Forge World. Any pieces, anywhere, but your total budget dedicated to Structure pieces CANNOT exceed $3,000.
-
$1,000 budget for anything in any other category (vehicles, gadgets, scenery, weapons).
-
Map must at least support Team Slayer
How to Play
- Forge a map within these constraints
- Reply to this post with a File Share link, or email it to me. Please include at least one screenshot.
- Pat yourself on the back!
Why?
The problem with a lot of community variants out there is that they’re not compatible with split screen. Hell, some of them are barely compatible with SINGLE screen. The idea behind this challenge - if you’re up for it - is to constrain yourself with a limited budget that will (hopefully) keep your map performant for split screen. No fancy art, no elaborate aesthetics, just the basics of fun gameplay.
I believe that - under these conditions - your best efforts will come through, as you’ll be forced to make important decisions along the way to maintain your budget.
All submissions that meet the guidelines will also be automatically put into a list for consideration for submission to matchmaking.
Show us you can do it!
It wouldn’t be fair for me to issue such a challenge without throwing down the gauntlet myself. Here’s Backbone - a 4v4/5v5 map that supports Slayer, Bomb, and 1 Flag. It is asymmetrical but has enough symmetry that people should be using most of the map. It supports vehicles, and is very performant. As of this post [Originally Posted on HBO 3/6/12] it’s not complete - the spawns still are unfinished. But you can play a basic game on it.
Pictures: One, Two, Three, Four, Five
Note how I make use of the Walkway [Picture Five] (a cheap but ornate object) to make the main “landmark” of the map, a wall that looks like a spine (hence the name Backbone). The key to lower budget maps is using the ornate-but-cheap maps to lend your creation that three-dimensional detailed feeling without spending thousands of dollars modeling something out of Block 1x1s. The permanent geometry of Forge World is your friend here - use it.
Prizes
I cannot announce the prizes at this time, but be sure that some are in store. There will be a winner of my choosing and a winner of the community’s choosing - so more than one person gets something!
