Tha Lack of Collision is negatively Affecting my Enjoyment of the game

I know this has been talked to death about, but I’m really not enjoying the lack of collision.

I’ll start off by saying this isn’t going to be a deal breaker for me, the game is still fun. That said however, I’ve already experienced many issues with the absence of collison.

  1. Enemies phasing in and out of each other. There’s nothing fun about popping an enemies shield and having his teammate materialize from their body and soak their shots.

  2. It’s probably not intentional, but having my teammates walk through me and either deflect a grenade or soak shots feels so bad.

3. Melee feels like a mess because of it. The game has been out for two days and I’ve already experienced countless issues with the melee because of this change. More than ever I’ll melee an enemy then lose sigh of them because I phase through them. Whether it’s their movement or an over-lung it feels very cheap to lose this way. Even worse is when your enemy manages to move though you in such a way that they get a backsmack on you.

It’s frustrating and feels cheap from a both a gameplay and design perspective.

EDIT: Just Checked, there is enemy collision at least in Quickplay. That raises another complaint then in that the Melee feels weird in general. Regardless, the first two points stand as negative gameplay effects IMO.

I’d like to add to this that I’ve also had experiences where a teammate will sometimes phase through me, limiting my vision at a critical moment of reaction time, and this has gotten me killed.

So many problems are introduced to Halo by eliminating collision detection, ultimately because the element of collision physics is fundamentally part of the core design of the Halo sandbox.

I agree that player collision needs to be there. I too had issues loosing enemies when melee. I guess I didn’t realize that you phase through enemies too, I thought it was only teammates. It’s a really strange thing to leave out of halo.

I thought/think collision detection with enemies is on?

Would like to follow up with pointing out that OP’s 3rd point:

Melee feels like a mess because of it. The game has been out for two days and I’ve already experienced countless issues with the melee because of this change. More than ever I’ll melee an enemy then lose sigh of them because I phase through them. Whether it’s their movement or an over-lung it feels very cheap to lose this way. Even worse is when your enemy manages to move though you in such a way that they get a backsmack on you.

Is even more noticeable in oddball, I did a few games of oddball and was holding tight corners so I could melee with the ball if someone came close and more often than not I got the first hit but still died because I phased through the enemy and they landed a hit on my back, its extremely infurating because its almost always going to be a kill when you land the first punch but its completely negated by phasing through your target and having to 180 before they hit you in the back

Agreed 100%. The removal of player collision is a solution in search of a problem. The game would be better if 343 would listen and revert this decision.

You win the quote of the day my friend…

This should be 343i’s new motto. They should print it on all there employee’s t-shirts.

Hard agree, collision is critical to halo’s combat and phasing through people causes way more tangible problems than it solves. Their argument that they dont want people getting stuck in doorways is a non-issue IMO.
Guess what happens in real life if tons of people crowd a doorway/hallway… they bump into each other. It happens, and its not game breaking. Enemies phasing in and out of eachother to soak up bullets is.

You’re right, it just looks/feels really weird. I edited the OP, but I still have issues with its absence.

Glad there’s already a post for this. It takes away from the gameplay so much, I’d say its my #1 complaint with the actual gameplay itself. Ultimately its just really immersion breaking and creates very frustrating situations.

A relatively common one is where I’m shooting near a choke point/corner and a teammate sprints through me, blocking my view at a critical moment. Similarly, as I’m shooting an enemy near the top of a slope, one of his teammates will sprint through them, tanking my shots intended for the guy I am engaging, and allowing my target continue to shoot over them and kill me. Obviously this all happens in a very short window, but its very frustrating never the less.

I had a situation that both me and a friend experienced last night, where we were capturing a point as an enemy dropped in. We phased through each other trying to melee the guy, and i assume hit each other instead, and then, I swear I phased through the enemy as I went to melee him, and he ended up behind me, letting him finish me off and then my still-confused friend. None of that should have ever happened and would not have in previous Halo games.

I will say that in many other ways, Infinite feels like it has some of the best elements of Halo 5 and Halo Reach, which is hard to pull off. This game could be one of the best Halo Multiplayer games ever made, and have me gladly coming back for years, if they would just stop trying to fix things that were never broken to begin with.

Strongly agree with this. i wish they would just make it easier for teammates to slide past each other, rather than turning off collisions altogether. No collisions with enemies is even more frustrating.
