I’m unable to open up text chat in-game with the ‘J’ key - despite it being bound. I’ve tried uninstalling/reinstalling the game. This started right around the time the Halo 4 insider test.
What can I do to get this resolved? Has anyone else had this issue? It’s been well over a month for me now.
I had this exact problem in the flight build itself, but I’m not currently experiencing it in retail. I’ve seen reports around about it in a couple of streams, though. Sorry I don’t have anything useful for you, but I can at least confirm you aren’t alone with the issue.
Might be worth submitting a ticket about it, especially if it continues when the update drops.

Yeah, frustrating in retail that it hasn’t worked in > month.
Doesn’t work for me and it makes trying to work together with people in Recon Slayer a nightmare.
I’ve had this issue too. I’m just glad I’ll have the option to turn text chat off soon.

Support updated me with this fix. It worked for me, and another person who was having the same issue. You will lose your settings (sensitivity, keybindings, etc.), but that’s easy enough to just rebind. I figured this should be public knowledge…
Of course, your mileage may vary. Do it at your own risk, don’t blame me if you mess anything up (which, I don’t know how you could…)
Ever since they updated the chat from the original it has been broken and significantly worse. I’m not sure what was going through their heads when they changed from the original chat box but as usual 343 made it much much worse. Of course, they haven’t fixed it but that isn’t surprising with their track record. I too have the same issues, and now I can’t even see who is typing because it will not show their names or it will always say “unknown”. I’ve had this plus a ton of issues arise about 3 weeks ago and they haven’t been resolved.
I also love how the moderator will always just tell you to file a ticket like they will ever reply with anything useful. You can delete the local data and all but it doesn’t change the fact the chat is downright broken and god awful.
I usually have it set to “T” but not only does it not work, but after a game, it resets to “J”. WTF?

this fix didnt help and i couldnt find the file or code you’re reffering to, furthermore we should not have to go digging this far for a feature that should work
Still no fix. I know this is of no surprise to anyone who has interacted with this company, but I figured I would bump this for giggles since one of their support agents just sent the same instructions from above for a 3rd time and then told me they would close my support ticket because I ignored them.

The text chat apparently is broken in more ways than just not opening. I have forum posts outlining an “Unknown” user sending messages while I’m in combat and when I stop to type and say I’m going to report them the username is still shown as “Unknown” instead of my own username. Give them some time and the game will be playable again

the release today seems to have fixed it – we shall see when I reload
