I’ve been trying to get my Text Chat to work again. For some reason when I downloaded the Halo 4 Flight, and switched back to the MCC I could no longer get the Text Chat box to pop up anymore. I had it set to the default Key “J” to open the Text Box but nothing happens when I press it. I can open the Text Chat box when I’m in the game lobby and send messages but not in-game. (I own Halo MCC on Steam)
What I’ve Tried:
Uninstall Halo 4 Flight.
Uninstalled Halo MCC and Reinstalled it.
Changed the Text Box Key to something else.
Reset all keys to default settings.
Tried Repairing Steam Files.
Tried Repairing MCC Files.
Tried to Clear MCC Cache.
same issue, happens in all games for me. text and voice chat no longer work. using Xbox Game Pass PC version. I still see and hear people in game, text and voice.
Happened to me when Halo 4 launched. Managed to fix it without reinstalling. Just close the game, delete or rename this file:
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\MCC\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\input.ini
and then re-launch. You’ll have to re-bind a couple things like the text and voice chat keys, and be careful not to bind the text chat key to certain keys which will bug out and not work at all. Worth testing right after you bind it so you can find a suitable key. It won’t reset all of your everything, though - just a few interface-related keys if I’m correct. Sure as hell beats reinstalling a 125GB game lol
Apparently they changed some things in this file, like changing the line:
ActionMappings=(ActionName=“ToggleTextChat”,bShift=False,bCtrl=False,bAlt=False,bCmd=False,Key=J)
to these two lines, separated by input method:
ActionMappings=(ActionName=“ToggleTextChat_Gamepad”,bShift=False,bCtrl=False,bAlt=False,bCmd=False,Key=Gamepad_LeftThumbstick)
ActionMappings=(ActionName=“ToggleTextChat_Keyboard”,bShift=False,bCtrl=False,bAlt=False,bCmd=False,Key=J)
So you’re welcome to tweak all of the stuff in this file if you want a very specific setup with specific keys (if you want a forbidden key you can try changing the binding above in this file which conflicts with the keybind you want to use elsewhere), but to be safe I’d just delete it and let the game create a new one with all the proper new default stuff in there. There’s more new stuff in there now than just the one change I listed above.

Is anyone not seeing a mic icon when they talk in Halo 4?
I followed the above steps post Season 5 just to make sure; Players can in fact hear me when I use the PTT in Halo 4, and I can see their name on screen when they speak, but nothing appears when I speak. Maybe this is an intentional setting?
Also, is anyone having issues cycling text chat channels?
When I open text chat it defaults to Squad, and hitting tab switches it to Squad again but the word is slightly offset downward. Hitting tab a 2nd time appears to do nothing.
This has been a thing for me since Halo 4 as well. I’ve not seen anyone in text chat since that game got added to the MCC. I thought it was just broken for everyone until I began playing with a friend and they told me that people were indeed still typing in text chat. I made sure my settings are correct in the Accessibility tab. Though I still have to manually cycle to “All” when bringing up the text box.
I’ve tried Whomping Walrus’s suggestion, and the only change that happened since is that it shows me joining the text chat where it didn’t before. I still don’t see text chat even though I know it’s still happening now.
I’ve tried a full reinstall of the game, which hasn’t worked either.
My text chat is not working I can’t switch channels from squad but other player in my last game was able to send messages in all chat calling another player who wasn’t even in the game “dog meat”
