Let’s be honest, a good portion of the fanbase would flip out if Chief was really a bad guy. We’ve played four games through his perspective and we’ve lived in his mind for two whole books. I think we know his character fairly well. Besides, it looks like Halo 5 may have a more morally grey story than any other Halo game.

Chief has never been a truly complex protagonist until Halo 4, and while Chief might still be the good guy as always, I have a feeling we’re going to be more interested in Locke than Chief anyways.

You actually went into this thinking Chief was going end up being truly in the wrong…

Not saying I don’t agree with a little screw up Chief’s part every now and then, but really?

Also, the story is not less interesting because Chief is still the good guy. There is no objective way to prove a claim like that, when there is still no confirmed plot for Halo 5 to speak of, and even when there is, each character’s trials and tribulations - the way each character develops mentally throughout Halo 5, will still be more important.

Everything being dark and edgy is cliche, as well as killing off characters.

Chief doing a complete 180 and becoming a villain wouldn’t even make sense because it’s entirely inconsistent with his character.

Master Chief is a very basic character finally being developed and to put him on the bad alignment of things simply wouldn’t make sense, we are finally getting to learn more about our hero and it would be a bit heartbreaking to realize that 343 is trying to throw our character that has been so pure into the other alignment.

343 is doing it right, let’s not shift the beehive.

Anybody who thought that John would turn up to be the bad guy does not understand how he is at all. All this -Yoink about sociopathic tendencies of spartan-IIs is exaggerated. Really you think Blue team would get mad because of what happened to them as children? They are the best of humanity. They are extremely clever. They would never hurt innocent people, and anyone who read the books would know that. You really underestimate Chief mentally, just because he does not talk much about unnecessary things. There’s a reason he is how he is. He is a man of duty. He puts duty above all. You’ve seen in Halo Escalation, he refuses to stop, he knows he is still needed. He is the culmination of the Librarian’s years of planning. Chief is the one who will let humanity achieve the Mantle. And I think he might have some genetic correlation to the iso-Didact too.
I think him turning bad would have been a cliched nonsense.

What he said.

While I prefer that they keep Chief a good guy, I kinda wished that they made his intentions ambiguous for a bit longer; the whole embassy fiasco got resolved too quickly I feel.

We always knew that if Chief really did kill people (which he did) he would’ve had a good reason (which he did).

I find this post op strange, how can you lison to htt and think chief was ever gonna end up turning to the dark side lol. I mean come on hes the main character for halo, he can go threw dark times but he would never do that. I never once was thinking he killed inocents, i just thought about what is the meaning behind the stories being told and what do people have to gain. Finding out that chief didnt do it in this new episode wasnt really a surprise at all, and didnt ruin anything tbh, this entire audio series seems to be more about setting the scene for halo 5 and setting up the a new human threat.
Chief still will have alot of heat on him regardless of him being inocent or guilty anyway so it doesnt really change to much. Chief will no dobt for at least a part of halo 5 be on the run so to speak until locke finds out whats going on and probably ends up joining him.

The real inteest is the inner workings of ONI and the curruption that is fragmenting earth with the outter planets which could lead to a new enermy to fight in halo 5 as well. Also there still a tone of unknown in HTT with the known goings on in deeps space and unknown signals ect…

Op has a great point. I was very interested in the story of MC losing it and making some “questionable” decisions! It kept me wondering what his future was going to be like. Now he is just another hero who has been framed. He will be hunted for something when he is actually innocent, and in the end vindicated. So typical.

But telling the audience why he did it so soon removed a large portion of the mystery in HTT. I still prefer his intentions to be justified and good willed, but I just didn’t want to know them so immediately. I assume this is to make more room for the Chief’s story in HTT and to prevent lingering on the embassy event for too long, but still, mystery’s where it’s at!

Chief is the heart of Halo, you can’t just bring in Locke and expect Chief to be done and over with everything we’ve known to come about him.

It’s just understood that John is still the good guy, I don’t feel it’s cliche.

We don’t know whats to come yet. He will still be on the run. Something tells me Ben won’t be able to vindicate John.

did anyone actually think cheif wasnt the good guy? LOL

it’s cliche?

so you’ve just found out that the good guy being the um, good guy seems to be a running theme in fiction?

If you have even the slightest clue about MC’s character, and the direction Halo is heading, let alone the religious connotations Master Chief has had throughout the series, you’dve known full well he was going to turn out to be the good guy. The question was who was setting him up.

Only one thing to say on this matter.

I wish people stopped throwing around labels that restrict the characters like “good guy” and “bad guy”. The story becomes far more enjoyable when you look at the characters as individuals with motivations you can symphatize with at least on some level. -Instead of forcing them into stereotypical boxes.

Especially when handing the entire Locke vs Chief confrontation. (E. g. Chief is the good guy, -Yoink- everyone who disagrees with him or is somehow against him.)

Having John randomly shoot up a peace conference would be abysmal writing. “Interesting” is not the same as “pointless shock value”. Might as well follow it up with a mission consisting solely of throwing Molotov cocktails at a puppy orphanage.

hey pops, what is “points shock value” to you may be “interesting” to others! Your opinion does not over rule anyone else’s opinion. I personally found the news about the shooting interesting AND shocking.
