Terrible Animations

Okay, can someone please explain Bungie/343 employees’ obsession with taking perfectly fine ragdolls, and forcing scripted animations over them, that always look TERRIBLE?

Now, this bothers me because there is just NO satisfaction in getting headshots whatsoever (which to me, is a HUGE part of the fun of Halo), whereas it looked (and thereore felt) -Yoink!- beautiful in Halo 2/3 (off host). It looked different and natural every time, which is better than any cartoony BS you can come up with in a motion capture suit.

Ragdolls don’t even trigger til the animations have finished, so bodies won’t react to walls/rails/edges. It’s like I’m still playing PS2. I know a lot of people are gonna say stuff like “who cares” but that’s not my point. My point is just, why? It’s more about how I wonder, rather than care (although I do care).

Reach had the same animation EVERY SINGLE TIME you ever got a snipe and it was just pathetic. Now with Halo 4, like 70% of time when you snipe someone, they do this sudden 1 frame switch to face the other way. I’ve seen that a lot in past games (every sword kill in Reach) and now you get it from HEADSHOTS! Jeez 343… it’s the dumbest thing ever and appears more in each new game. It’s crazy. Do they think it looks good?

If you really must do these animations, can you at least make normal ones please?

They look so much better in my opinion, I love how the bodies go limp when they get shot in the head, it’s perfect. So are the death animations, definitely not cartoon like, but more realistic.

rag dolls and engi es that work on them like Euphoria are a tad overrated in my opinion unless it’s for explosions

I like the new animations.

I haven’t seen enough of Halo 4 to comment on its ragdolls, but Reach certainly got annoying seeing the same animation over and over again. I guess it’s probably harder to ragdolls now that the guns are effectively all hitscan, so physics simulations must be a lot harder.

What bugs me the most is the mid-air animations. I’m sick and tired of seeing Spartans spinning over the wrong shoulder after an explosion. Seriously, it’s an explosion. Just let the ragdolls take over and it will probaly look 100% better (and funnier).

Completely unrelated, but can we get the Halo 3 punch-in-the-back-launches-you-to-the-moon back? That was hilarious.

Exactly, but I mean with deaths from everything. Why the hell do animations still exist at all, never mind animations as bad as these. I’m talking about the way the always do this instant switch to face away from you. I also saw someone get headshotted from behind while sprinting, and they just stopped dead and fell backwards. Do you know how much better that would look if you just leave it to the ragdolls. They are better in every imaginable way.

Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves. I personally prefer no gore.

All of the animations I’ve seen look fantastic and the rag-doll physics are present.

Animations are great!!
Just the quick time events have some bad animation, or when the S**p explodes, it has bad graphic quality… but still EPIC!

Someone get on modding the game to remove the animations and send the player models into instant ragdolls, I want a YouTube vid stat!

And to VideoGangsta, I would make the argument that it could be realistic for them to grab their head. The bullet first had to pass through the victim’s helmet, which would cause noise and possibly shattered visor bits flying into their face faster than the bullet. Spartans have much faster reaction times than normal humans, so they could theoretically react to that. Besides, reflexes don’t need the brain to trigger them, so the hand coming up to the face could be acceptable. But after that, the body should go to immediate ragdoll. No dramatic falling to the ground.

What really drives me crazy is the mid-air animations. The more I think about it, the more I’m pissed that no matter what, you ALWAYS wind up horizontal to the ground, spinning in a way that makes it quite clear your Spartan is still conscious.

Also, not that I know code or anything to do with making videogames, but it seems to me that we should be at a point in technology where we should be able to stop the ragdoll’s legs and arms from ghosting into each other.

I agree with the op. i missed the satisfiying backflip that i used to see back in halo 2 and 3 whenever id headshot, snipe, or beat someone down. Now its either the same animations over and over again, or the person justs folds in on themselves whenever meleed or hit with an explosion, and their body spazzes out, with their limbs ghosting into themselves. They should have stuck with halo 2s death animations and ragdolls in my opinion, but gone with halo 3s reaction to taking a melee hit.

I don’t really pay attention when someone dies as soon as I snipe one I’m looking for the next victim.

Geeze a rant about how they die. Are you really pay that much attention to that.

Don’t we already have Euphoria for this type of animation?
