Ten-year Xbox One Support?

So we all know Infinite will most likely be spread out as a Live Service game over the next ten years. Halo Infinite is ALSO going to launch on last-generation hardware, which is already almost ten years old in 2021. So by the end of Infinite’s lifecycle, 343 plans to support the game on what will essentially be 20-year-old hardware? That just seems like a weird move to me. I almost wonder if they will pull a Destiny and just stop updating the Xbox One version like Bungie stopped supporting 360/PS3 Destiny in 2016.

What do you guys think? What are the chances, that in 2031, Halo Infinite’s last major expansion/DLC/story will launch on the Xbox One line (at that point, 18 years old)? Or, alternatively, is the 10-year plan even viable on any hardware or version of the game?

To put this whole 10-year plan thing into perspective, Reach would have just ended last year with one last story expansion and MCC would have launched with Halo 2’s final update

It’s most likely Infinite content updates for xbox one s/x will be dropped at some point, as an example MCC is currently on one s/x, series s/x, but support for original 360 versions is no more. We will no doubt see a new generation of xbox’s after series s/x during Infinites lifespan.
If you think how quickly technology moves, to still be supporting xbox one in 10 years is basically going to hold developers back in the potential of games development.
343 have done a great job in bringing Infinite to one s/x, so for now it’s great, enjoy the moment

I don’t think MCC ever came out on the 360.

Maybe they were referencing the original 360 Halo games, which are being taken offline?

Most likely, as in Destiny, the game will support Xbox One up to the maximum time allowed. And then they will make as a “definitive” content for the Xbox One. Completely closing that cycle.

I wonder if there will be some maps and playlists that some PC and X1 players just cannot handle. I’m sure some forge maps will be too much for them.

It will all hinge on Microsoft tbh. If they decide to continue live services for the One X, then I don’t see why the updates couldn’t be implemented on both platforms. If it’s capable of running the base game, then as long as there is no major graphics payload updates, then all is good.

There’s a 0% chance of it being on Xbone for 10 years. At max it’ll be on Xbone until 2024.

Hopefully letting us have forge before we get cut

This one is actualy easy solved. If you you are No longer able to play the game by hardware limit. YOUwil be able to stream it to youre console

Yea. This is the future of gaming anyways.

Microsoft has been developing and pushing their xbox anywhere system hard as of late, so this would most likely be the only option other than cutting off One+OneX.

That being said, I have my doubts of infinite lasting 10 years. Every game that has promised as such (outside of mmos) has fell short.

To play devil’s advocate, Destiny is getting along pretty well. Sure, they might be working with D2 instead of D1 but they’ve been going strong for 7+ years, with plans for content through at least 2024 (although depending on who you ask it’s an MMO so my point’s invalid anyway)

You’re totally right. It all depends on how long Microsoft wants the Xbox One to remain a viable console.

But I also don’t want 343 to limit themselves in terms of what they can bring to the game, let’s say five years from now, because they are working with 13-year-old technology

I hope they drop Xbox One support almost immediately (certainly by the end of 2022) otherwise it’ll hold back the games full potential.

People still running old Xbox One hardware in 2022 will just have to stream using X Cloud.

Hopefully Microsoft’s treatment of Internet Explorer does not leak over into gaming.

Doesn’t cloud x changes many things? Some friends of mine were running the halo infinite tech preview flight 2.1/2.2 on gen 8 console (xbox one) and the game was good for them and they enjoyed it. Streaming games via cloud x for sure will help with the need to upgrade the hardware every 1 to 3 years, no? So your consoles will have longevity.

I highly doubt they’ll drop original Xbox One support anytime soon, simply because there are still loads of players who play on Xbox One/XB1S/XB1X so it wouldn’t make any sense from a business perspective to drop support. Infinite (from what I’ve heard) has horrendous performance on OG consoles (30FPS on OG XB1) but I don’t see how anything they could add would make it any worse.

As time progresses and the amount of past generation console users dwindles, so too will the support for those systems.

Basically it’ll be here for a few more years but they’ll just end up not supporting it once a certain threshold is met.

I mean, frankly I’ll be very unhappy if they don’t. The new consoles, while using better hardware parts, aren’t really that different. Supporting the older system is as simple as optimizing the game for lesser graphics options, if that’s even necessary. And with the enormous rarity and general difficulty of acquiring a Series X, I think it would be a really bad move on their part to try and exclude players who don’t have the newer system, especially since they’re doing an awesome thing and being very inclusive with Infinite’s multiplayer by making it FTP and available on PC.
