Tech Preview First Impressions

  1. Love the look and feel of the game. Played on both MKB and Controller, felt like I did better on MKB so hopefully people won’t complain about AA too much on PC.

  2. Needler feels kinda OP. Like if they empty a magazine in your direction, they will almost certainly track and hit and explode unless one can find cover.

  3. Shotguns feel kinda weak. It feels like it takes ~2-3 shots at close range to kill someone. Their higher rate of fire makes this not as bad, but it’d still be better if 1 shots were at least possible (headshots, maybe)? And maybe I just need to aim better!

  4. AR feels GREAT. This is the useful, primary-able AR I’ve been wanting in Halo for years. One caveat to that is I definitely feel like my kills get stolen more when I lower an enemy shield near a teammate, it as it still doesn’t get headshots. Not a huge issue for me personally, unless you guys decide to start implementing daily/weekly/seasonal challenges and stuff focused around getting AR kills… Either way, I don’t know if people are asking for this or not, but DO NOT NERF THE AR. It’s perfect <3

  5. Bots are actually quite impressive IMO. I don’t know where ‘Marine’ difficulty falls on the scale, but for a while I thought they were actual players (until I looked at the names on the other team, and then actually read the description of the playlist lol). One thing I will say that gives them away as bots is sometimes they’ll start shooting at you as you’re coming out of a building; if you hide back in the building, they’ll turn around and go do something else(A real player would probably spam that building with grenades and then try to clear you out, probably). Still not a big deal since it’s really the only noticeable flaw in their AI so far (though I’ve only played for a couple of hours).

  6. Customization looks quite nice, looks like you’re going the path of Reach in terms of depth and variety, and style (which is good, Reach set the bar for Halo armor customization)!

  7. Love that classic Halo music in the menus.

(I’ll probably add more as I spend more time in the preview)

Update for PvP Arena Slayer:
Holy crap the fun has been sucked out of the game lol. Nothing but magnums and people spawning in front of/ behind you. Something needs to change for this to not to just be sweaty MLG-fanboy fodder, otherwise it’s only going to be played the the small minority of the Halo community that wants to sweat their -Yoink- off every time they play PvP. There is absolutely a stark difference between playing against bots and players in this game. I think playing with a controller on PC is going to be quite difficult in this one (which I know will make some sadistic mustard racists happy), as the ability to sprint around and quickly snap to a target is 10x easier with MKB than controller, and this game is definitely more like 5 in its CoD-likeness. Not necessarily a bad thing, but, again, hugely different experience than playing with bots (which is to be expected0.

The AR needs a buff, or the magnum needs a nerf (I’d prefer the former, personally). Arena Slayer is little more than Halo CE, except sped up by 5. Magnums are pretty much the only weapon worth using as even the BR doesn’t do as well at close range as the Magnum does. And, maybe it’s because the 3 maps selected for the tech test happen to be CQB maps, but the maps all of a sudden feel really small and claustrophobic when playing against other people. I frequently spawned next to the enemy team and hand to try and sprint to the side of the map where my team was or get ganked immediately.

Not gonna lie, kinda disappointed in the PvP aspect. Hopefully 8v8 will be better.
