Team Colors Option

As a long time fan of Halo, seeing the team colors taken away was something I did not expect, however, I also seem to like the idea since it allows people to show off their spartans in-game. In my time playing the flight, i had no issue with not having team colors and having outlines in its place, however, I understand that there are those who would prefer to have team colors over outlines, and I think the easiest answer to fix this problem is to add the option to be able to switch from outlines to team colors. I’ve seen this in one game ive played, Mordhau, and it works pretty well (despite mordhau not having outlines but friendly markers instead). Do you guys think they should implement that option into the game?

I certainly wouldn’t have an issue with it. I’d keep it set to seeing everyone’s armour coatings to see what people like.

Will be interesting to see what they have and I bet some will be really cool.

I agree with this. This is just a staple of Halo gameplay, and I don’t think it’s expendable. In fact, there is some concern that this makes it harder for colorblind people. There was one person in Favyn’s chat from his first Infinite flight where they said that the lack of team colors made it harder for them. 59:46 I quote “As someone who’s colorblind, I hate the lack of team colors. Makes things way more difficult for me. I’ve had multiple instances where I shoot at my teammates on instinct.” I hope they wouldn’t mind me putting their quote here. I think their issue is really important

I do. I really tried to give it a chance in the flight, but I honestly was getting thrown off by the new system at times. It may not have helped that they were blue bots with red outlines, but sometimes it was hard to tell from afar if I was looking at an enemy or not. Even up close I would occasionally find myself stunned for a split second before I registered that I’d run into an enemy, which doesn’t sound so bad, but like I’ve said before, that split second of reaction is enough to cost you the fight in a shooter game. The red outlines were also a bit harder to perceive damage dealt with. I know they can be changed, but that threw me off even more as far as who the enemies were.

I get that the main reason for this decision is to show off cosmetics, but honestly, the outlines to me made it just as hard to see cosmetic differences as changing the armor color to red or blue would. Not to mention we’d still see plenty of each other’s Spartans in FFA, and in whatever potential multiplayer PvE they might throw in (or in the pre and post game lobby if they improve the UI).

The fact the shield colors are changeable, and the fact that in MCC they added in a classic-armor-only option in H3 multiplayer makes me think it wouldn’t be overly hard to implement such an option.

im mean this as genuinely as i can, do people actually do this? i have never looked at someone else spartan (friends aside) and thought anything other then “thats a teammate/enemy” i couldnt tell you what a single person in the flight was wearing, armor or coating wise. for me i just ignore everything that isnt what color their team is.

I do especially with the opening and winning screens. I’m not sure if I will be able to tell on PVP but I used to be able to tell helmets on H3. It’s hard on this game now as Halo 5 they all look similar.

team colors wont be back and a toggle wont be added. It creates too much variation from the visual identity halo is going for. At most, I expect it just to move to a friendly highlight with nothing on enemies. As much as I love MCC, it really convinced people that everything should have a toggle for the sake of “legacy” (not everyones argument here of course, but its one that does come up) and I really dislike that fallback.

I am also not colorblind so I cannot speak on the accessability of the outline system. Though I would assume if a colorblind player could not see a certain color, they would change the color of the outline. If your completely colorblind, i dont see how team colors would fix that anyway.

To be honest any option that takes away from my expression of my Spartan I don’t like. I understand why people want team color options however personally I cannot get behind this. Call it selfish or whatever you want however the idea that I will invest time into my Spartan only for the colors to be voided really bothers me. It’s probably because I am a big MMO player as well.

Good news is I think it is unlikely.

huh, interesting, i always just sit on my phone or tab out during those. its why i didnt really miss the halo reach lobby screen as i never used it. good to know they get some use then.

I used to do this back in Halo 3 playing FFA. I really liked seeing all the different armor color combinations people would come up with. I wanted to be able to see that in Team Slayer too. I regret wanting that

Yeah it would completely invalidate their message. I wouldn’t mind this option in Custom Games though.

They’ve invalidated their own message by limiting armor color to presets they’ve designed for you. Let us design our own, and keep the presets as well. Make em good enough, and people will still pay, while at the same time being able to make their own design of some sort, yellow leg, red arm, teal helmet, whatever. It would be monumental for player expression

They are not invalidating their message lol. This Halo has more customization than ever before.

They have the data on how many people customize their Spartans and how they do it in the past. I have never liked the customization system until now. It’s simple for the majority and not overly complex like what you suggest would be. I understand Halo has a community that loves what you are talking about however have both systems requires too much overhead for launch.

I was being a little heavy-handed with that, I’ll admit. I was just trying to point out the irony. What I mean is, they hurt their message by having a huge missed opportunity to have the best player expression so far. I wanna thank you for pointing out that the Halo community loves this, and it is important to us. It shows a lot of respect, coming from an MMO community, to a different community. We sometimes forget that people who come from different backgrounds have different needs and priorities for games that they like. So understand that I am simply trying to protect the traditions of this community, and I don’t want to attack 343 or anyone else for suggesting outside ways of doing things. It needs to be said, though, that these are outside, and there is more precedent to keep tradition than there is to change it. I think 343 is doing a bang-up job, and I’m just pointing out one area where they could do better to keep traditional Halo alive

I mean I’ve been playing Halo and MMOs for like 20 years now lol. I understand both sides quite clearly. I just think if Halo has prestigious coatings it would feel as valuable as getting a rare drop in an MMO. I feel like you think I’m new to this community when I have been apart of it essentially since Halo existed.

Why? Who does it harm? People who want it a certain way now have that option, and people who are fine how it is can just leave it. Everybody wins.

It just sounded like that, my apologies. I thought so cause of the whole “It’s probably because I am a big MMO player as well.” but I guess you literally meant you were a big Halo player “as well”. Sorry bout that. Anyway, it is really big dude. I don’t like the idea of my player expression being put behind a pay wall, as other games do. I just want primary, secondary colors for different armor pieces, and I think they can make the armor coatings spicy enough to where people would still wanna pay for them. I think they’ve shown that already (I really like the Gundam coating). It’s such a simple system, I think they could implement it well. As for team slayer, I hear ya, I wanted that too. But not now that I see their solution. You can’t even see the armor colors that well because of outlines. My solution would have been to add little lights on the armor, front and back, that would glow red or blue. It may be hard to tell if you chose red armor color though, so idk, they just threw a monkey wrench into the whole system

That solution can be fine tuned especially that the build we played was like 7 months away from launch and still in late alpha. This is why developers don’t do these play tests because people lack the understanding where the game will be. Also they have stated so many times that a lot of these will be unlockables through seasonal content and in-game progression. I feel like you are under selling that so you can make your point slightly.

they wont give team colours because they need you to see coatings to make you want to buy them more, any claims of self expression as a reason are secondary imo, its always about the money
