Taking customization to a new Level

Upon talking with my friends over live while playing Reach, we discussed possible ideas for player customization. Since we know nothing about Halo 4 customization or gameplay at the moment, I will be using Halo: Reach as an example.

Visor

Section 1: Visor Color

With Reach introducing Visor colors for players, it would only make sense to expand upon them. Obviously you would include the ability to buy predetermined Visor colors but, you would also have the ability to pay a large amount of Credits to choose your own custom colors. So, the predetermined colors, like Blue, Silver, Black, and Gold, would cost a cheap amount compared to buying the option to choose your own custom color.

IE:

> Gold - 250,000 Cr
>
> Custom Color - 5,000,000 Cr

Section 2: Visor Details

With the ability to buy Emile’s EVA

in Reach once you buy the entirety of EVA, it added a new level of allowing your character to take on his own persona. Unfortunately, because there is only one [C] Helmet, nearly everyone uses it. In Halo 4, I am suggesting the ability to customize your own "Scratch faces" on the helmets you buy. This ability to customize it would require a new editor on it's own to customize your "scratch faces." I don't normally do this, but i'm going to use Call of Duty as inspiration for the editor.

The Emblem Editor on Black Ops is supreme and allows for players to maximize customization on a level of what they want. So, you to customize your "scratch face" you would go into an editor similar to Black Ops and make your face. Once you make your face or design, you then will be able to place it on your spartans visor in "Centered, Left, or Right".

Now we have to deal with the problem of this editor being overused. No player would want to use the default helmet anymore when they can have their own version of it. To fix this problem you would have to pay a massive amount of credits to use the Visor Detail Editor on a single helmet. The cost of accessing the ability to use the editor on a helmet will vary depending on how big the visor is, and how "cool" the helmet looks.

Mark VI Detail Editor - 7,000,000 Cr

Emblem

Section 1: Emblem Editor

Again, I will be taking inspiration from Black Ops. As I stated before, the Emblem Editor in Black Ops is impressive, and 343i should use a system similar to it. You will still have the ability to compile emblems out of predetermined shapes, but you will also be able to use an Emblem Editor. Accessing the Emblem Editor will be free of charge and players who want to maximize customization will take advantage of it. When you select the option Emblem, you will have two options that will appear. Emblem Editor Basic, Emblem Editor Advanced, and a third option that is detailed in Section 2. The basic version will obviously be akin to Halo Reach's current editor, and the Advanced will allow you to compile together certain parts of emblems to make your own custom emblem. Once you create the emblem, it must then be approved by 343i as being appropriate. Once it is approved, you will have the ability to utilize it.

Section 2: Emblem Placer

Throughout Halo games, Emblems have appeared in different locations on your payer models. Halo 3's location on your shoulder was good, but not many people could see it. Halo Reach's location was by far the worst. With this feature, I propose the ability to choose where the Emblem is located on your Player Model, and it's size. Size of the emblem will be predetermined options as we don't want an emblem to wrap all the way around an entire Player Model. The player will be able to place the emblem everywhere except the Visor, as we already have "scratch faces" there.

make sure you don’t have 100% coustomization (looks at black ops) * shivers

The problem with emblem editor is that emblems have been removed with each subsequent game due to obscene combinations. Allowing fully customizable emblems will be redundant after the efforts taken since Halo 2. All this said I realize 343i is not Bungie, and they may not have as much of a concern regarding this, but seeing as how strict their forums are with language I doubt they will re-implement -Yoink!--forming objects for emblems.

But I am all for purely-aesthetic options out the wazoo.

Yes of course. Taking obscene combinations into account would be very important. Unfortunately, the Emblem Editor won’t make it into Halo 4, unless 343i makes it so you have to customize your emblem through this website and then wait for it to be approved.

Something like Nameplates.

Does no one really care about these ideas?

The problem is you put a tremendous amount of time to explain some concepts I could type up in a couple short paragraphs. The ideas aren’t all that unique of concepts either. That is not to say they aren’t GOOD concepts, they just aren’t that much of a departure from things that either already exist in some form in Halo games or are borrowed from another game.

The concept of scratching something into your visor would be a serious development challenge. In order for this to not look like a copy-paste image on a surface that will react to light changes, angles, colors around it etc would be very tough. Emile’s helmet is bump-mapped and rendered into the armor, so it reacts to light, colors etc. Copy-paste images would not have this ability without a serious engine development, and would likely cause rendering difficulties on any degree.

Visor colors are just that, colors. And like I said previously, an emblem editor would cause a lot of extra work on 343i’s part to screen, filter and monitor each individual image. It would be on the same scale as how Forza must police their custom vinyls. The difference here is when Forza is done, it is pretty much done. Car packs come out, maybe some track packs, but minimal gameplay tweaks, very much unlike the monthly updates for Halo that we have come to expect.
