The sword is top of my list of weapons that other people seem to be devastating with but I can’t do a thing with. At the moment I have to force myself to pick up a sword when the opportunity arises, just to try to get better with it. Please share any tips or strategies you have to help me improve my swordsmanship.
Why do you just want the tips? The whole swords works better.

Thrust and smart scope are your friend. With these the range is crazy.
I’ve heard that smart scope is the way to go, but you move so slowly when in smart scope I can never get in range of anyone unless they are standing still.
You can lunge if you hold the ads button and hit RT. I would stay in a place with small space like an armory so you can lunge at just about anybody who walks in. You could probably use a sword in an open field if you have a speed buff on.
If you are engaged in a rare occasion of a sword fight, pressing your melee button instead of the shooting button makes the sword slash slightly more quickly, I haven’t tested this much for Halo 5, but I know it works well in Halo Reach and 4.

Zooming doesn’t affect movement speed beyond the fact that you can’t sprint.
Use it defensively rather than aggressive
If aggressive spawn it along with a speed boost.
