Sword lunging question

Lots of people complain about how players with the sword or hammer seem to be able to charge into your gunfire from quite a distance and still kill you… I too experience this quite regularly. Yet whenever I have the sword, it feels like I have to get quite close before I can lunge forward. Is there something I’m missing? Perhaps more than one way to swing the sword? For this reason I’m not that bothered about picking swords or hammers up for my own use, but find it frustrating when they’re used against me.

Clearly I’m not a great player, currently only gold 6. This is not so much a complaint as a genuine question about how the sword works in the game.

Desync. Desync. Desync.

Yeah, I pretty much gave up on the sword once I realized I couldn’t hit a wall even if I was standing right up against it. I want to say it’s desync like @Little_Squash stated but I really couldn’t tell you

I have another sword question that is sort of related.

What’s the strategy when two people with swords are parrying each other.

I don’t know if I’m swinging too late or too soon or if maybe I should use melee instead of the trigger for the second swing but I seem to lose those more than I should. It makes ninja FFA a lil frustrating.

Any ideas?

I have the same issue with the Sword & Hammer. Are the other players using the Jet Pack? Or is there a special key / controller combo to do a sword jump-lunge?

This has always been a problem in Halo. It’s not new to Infinite. And it’s a problem with all melee attacks.

Some people can lunge like 15 ft with a regular melee and like 30 ft with a sword.

I generally don’t lunge at all with a normal melee, or at most maybe an inch or two. With a sword I can maybe lunge a foot on a good day.

Sprinting stops you from lunging so people slide to bring back the visor so they know when to lunge

Using your mobility to make them whiff a lunge. This could be done by backing out of their sword reticule range so it drops the red reticule and they would end up swinging empty, which you can inch back in for a lunge. This has been the tactic for all Halo games, but it’s trickier for Infinite since the “lockon” range for Infinite is really far.

Well, that makes too much sense.

Thanks for this. I really don’t remember there being this much parrying but I guess I used to play more to SWAT back in the day.

The problem is there is a delay to the attack when you are sprinting. You will now notice, because you’ll be looking for it, that when you are in a sprint the reticle does not appear.

In order to override this you slide, the reticle instantly appears and you maintain motion, and you can instantly attack because the reticle is now red.

You are welcome x

and there screen they aren’t lunging. They are close enough. It’s just the poir netcode which shows you the opponent in a different spot. Always had been the problem with melee…

Don’t use your trigger. Use your melee button if you don’t already. You can more quickly hit another player with a sword faster using the melee button over the trigger.

I used to use melee all the time. I’m not sure why that stopped.

To bring it back to the main topic, do you get a bigger lunge with the trigger over melee?

Just slide before the swing.

The Hammer doesn’t lunge in Infinite, it creates an AOE.

But yes, the reason for those long range kills is desync. On their screen you are closer than you are on yours. When it comes to registering things like lunges, damage, etc. The system is designed purposefully to favor the person doing the lunching or damage over the person receiving it. This is why you get damaged behind corners sometimes, on their screen you haven’t made it out of sight yet. This is also why peak-shooting is such a huge advantage, because you will come around the corner on your screen before you come around it on theirs. Meaning your shot registers first if your reaction to their position is on point.

Yea you get a bigger lunge with the trigger, but you can swing faster if you use melee. When you are really close to another player, you dont need the lunge. So its better to use the melee button and swing faster.

It’s not like that anymore is it?

I have wondered the same thing about sword kills. Most of the time when someone with a sword kills me it’s like they have lunged 25-30 feet and I think there must be something fishy going on because there is no counter for that, it’s like they teleport to me and then I’m dead, but when I have the sword I have to be up close plus I have to strike someone several times and 2 out 3 encounters I do little damage. I must be doing it wrong.
